4/19/15 #Tremblant Conditions

Editors Note of Historical Reference for Winter 2014/2015:

Believe it or not, but there are a few very brave readers
who tell us that during the summer following, or in the fall
as the next Ski/Board Season is anticipated, they will actually
read the whole previous seasons diary, day by day, from start to finish.

For anyone undertaking such a review of our Tremblant “Winterbook”
for this season, please be advised that to start with, no-one could have anticipated
the astounding, record breaking, run of Winter days with no Thaw events
and the Extraordinary Trail Quality that resulted. So, as we look back at it
ourselves, we see that story-line evolving as a dominant theme. Please forgive
our enthusiasm, but it is truthful and just one of those unexpected seasons
that compared to historical averages, caught us all up with day-after-day “Amazing”
that was uniquely surprising in a very good way.

For Winter 2014/2015, It all started here:

It’s Time To Jump Into Action!!!

.... It’s either today, or wait ’til next November!

Here are some samples from Last Sunday, a day that was reasonably close
to what today should be in terms of Heat and Performance.

There should be a gradual release of the overnight freezing at Mountain Elevations by
around 10:00 A.M. and that process will generate an advance of Softening Surfaces
that typically work upward over the Lower South Sectors and then the Lower North
Sectors. How fast up the Mountain the Softness climbs depends on several factors,
but the biggest one today will probably be the peak Daytime High temp. that will
take the Summit well into the Plus C range at somewhere around +8 C by 2:00 P.M.

Consequently, we feel the most user-friendly conditions will be between 10:00 A.M.
and 2:00 P.M., after which there is a probability of relatively high Moisture content
in the thawing top layers that will inhibit Glide. You can wax or coat to offset that,
however really wet, late day Spring Thawed Surfaces can and do exhibit high
amounts of resistance to forward motion.

This sample above of Beauchemin from last Sunday had exactly the same
thing happening over the course of the day and what we found was that
the small Moguls that formed on the right side of this pic. above were
extremely useful in allowing those with the skills, to use them as ramps for
low level launches that permit turns to be performed in the air where there
is no friction at all, and that makes things a lot easier... that is if you feel
comfortable initiating airborne manoeuvres.

Another technique to combat the effects of Too Much Sun...

Ski The Shaded Side...

This P’tit Bonheur example above is a perfect way to point out the advantage
of Skiing the Shadows when the Heat of “Spring” gets a little intense for the
Sunny Sides that become soft and sometimes slow when moisture saturates
the surface on the one solar exposed side. These advantages become even
more apparent if you traverse in and out of the shade once or twice and experience
the dramatic differences in speed between the speedy shade and the slow solar.

There have been cases over the past few weekend “Spring” days here, where the
shaded sides have even re-solidified after about 3:30 P.M. So for example, with
the extended open hours to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday April 11th, there was 90 minutes
of Last Run Super Quick, very fast Skiing on the one shaded side of almost any North
Side Trail that was really fun! Due to the majority that seemed to be content to pull up
a chair or a hay bale with a beer by 3:30, it was made even more fun because there
were fewer people on the runs and you could safely open up the Speed factor for
some High Velocity Carving Fun!

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
