It’s Another Day At The Office...

Morning Web Cam Eye Opener catches a Ski Patrol Staff Member
on the way to the Summit HQ.

The Ski Patrol will be busy today with monitoring the progression
of thermally induced softness into the Hors Piste/Un-Groomed
Terrain that’s scheduled to Open as Temp’s rise later on(#).

A Common Spring Ski Day Utility Profile:

Overnight Sub-Zero, roughly -11 C at Summit Level,
resolidifies any residual softness from yesterday and
together with Grooming generates overall smoothness
where indicated on the Archived Official Trail Status
included herein. (#)There are Multiple Progressive(gradual)
Openings in the irregular surfaces of the re-froze Hors Piste,
Sous Bois, Glade and all other Un-Groomed as the Ski Patrol
monitor those trails for Safe Passage as temps rise to “+”, Plus,
Above Zero C levels and surface softness occurs.

Whenever the daily temperature cycles include SWINGS ACROSS ZERO C...
the Laws Of Physics tell you there will be Icy Bits. Skiing and Snowboarding
are Sports that require Physical Conditioning in oder to control Gravity and Speed...

HOWEVER... There is ONLY ONE THING that interfaces your athletic capability
with the Alpine Snow Sports Trail Network Surfaces, which is the Base/Edge
assembly on the bottom of each Ski or Board. Period.

You could be an Olympic Gold Medal Skier or Snowboarder, but with
dull edges, your Skills Can Not Be Effectively Transferred To The Surface.

This is Especially and Critically Important When There Are Potential Icy Bits!!!

(**) The pic you see is of what is arguably the very best automated
Ski tuning machine in North America, and it is located at Tremblant,
right at the P-1 Base of the Cabriolet in the Chalet des Voyageurs.
Technically speaking, it is a Wintersteiger Discovery II, all the way
from Austria, Europe. It is a CNC(Computer Numerically Controlled),
“State Of The Art” device that is more of a Hone than a Grinder, so it
is not invasively aggressive on your Ski or Board bases. If your Skis
or Board are not truly flat, or the edges have profound flaws of deep
gouges or very bad rust, the Ski Shop does have base and edge
grinders that can get those gross faults out before the Skis or Boards
are loaded into the Wintersteiger for the final, precision finishing.

The bottom line is that any level of Skill you can execute with your
body, from head to toe, can only be connected to the ground with
the base assembly of your Skis or Board, so it is critically important
to have them an optimized functional level. Most "Consumer Grade”,
Mass Produced Skis/Boards all have dimensional inaccuracies to some
degree to start with, add in the glitches generated by use and hazard
contact, and you end up with a very poor mechanical connection to
trail surfaces that result in far less control than ideal for either safety
or fun.

If You Can Imagine... Un-tuned Skis/Boards at the Mountain are rather
like a Ferrari at the Race Track that’s been equipped with Flat, Bicycle Tires.
Two Strikes Out, before you even begin to go down the hill.

The saving grace is that almost any Ski or Board made, will respond
with a Night into Day, POSITIVE Performance increase INSTANTLY.
You will literally feel like someone gave you a new set of Skis or Board.
And.... all this for 39.95 + tx. It’s a Ridiculously Excellent Deal and it is
entirely a mystery to us why some people would travel half-way across
the Region, Half-way across the Country, half-way across the Planet...
to go anywhere Skiing, spending $,$$$.$$ and not have a 39.99 tuneup
on the gear they will curse or mistakenly curse the hill, that could change
their whole experience to the Very, Very, Very, HUGLY Plus Side.

What We See... What We Hear... Folks complaining on the Lift about
Conditions that are actually quite good and very well optimized by
Mountain Crews... and when you ask them about their last Tune-Up,
they can’t even remember what YEAR they last had it done... if EVER.
These are not serious Skiers/Boarders, and one of our very biggest
Pet-Peeves is that they are overheard by many who may be erroneously
mislead by their Too-Loud and inappropriate blame.

It’s Spring... Temp’s Go Below and Over Zero C in 24hr cycles...
Icy Can Happen Naturally... Bring The Right Tools For The Job.

Of Course... readers here may be the first to have regularly maintained
equipment, but even then, we have the responsibility to promote the
benefits to those less well informed, or call out those who unjustifiably
criticize conditions that can be dominated by Mother Nature.

Weather Notes:

The Temperature Differential is typically -4C cooler at Summit levels,
so there are possibilities that any indications of rain at the Sud, South,
Resort Base could be Snow at the top whenever that spread would
put the Summit at Sub-Zero C. Additionally, any Summit and Upper
Versant Nord, North forms of precipitation can be influenced by even
Cooler “Winds Aloft”, hundreds or thousands of feet over the Summit.
The Probability may be debatable, but it certainly increases whenever
temps are low, single digit Plus Values, and are dropping at the same time.

As you can see below, that potential for Summit Level Sub-Zero’s begins
at around 6:00 P.M. if Mother Nature is doing her “Usual” thing. It’s
another “Tipping Point” scenario where the closeness to Zero could
make a substantial difference between rain and snow on the Mountain
for over 12 hours, and that’s what gets our attention when we see this
pattern developing.

IMPORTANT REPEAT FROM YESTERDAY:

After Revision, the raw Open number is down today by only one trail,
so the point still stands in a relative way.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
