11/23/18 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

13(*) Open Trails on Versant Sud, South, Versant Nord, North sides of #Tremblant.
Ski out Summit-To-Base Total Mountain Vertical on both sectors.

(Please Note:We are working simultaneously with new Operating Systems
and multiple software/app changes and upgrades and we are experiencing
publishing delays while we optimize workflow and formatting compatibilities.
We hope to have it dialled-in within 2/3 days. Your patience is appreciated!)

Performance Sample from yesterday, and
we expect similar, with additional groomed
refinements for today.

Firm, Fast, And Fun!

These are some of the finest early season conditions
for activating all those Summer-dormant Ski muscles!

Unseasonably cool temps have generated a super solid
base that is 98% extremely dense snow with carve-able
groomed top layers. There are some exposed areas on
steeper pitches where the combination of traffic and
vigorous Nor-West winds have had the ability to move
the loose top layers off to the trail sides leaving this solid
base with some slick zones that need careful navigation.

In relation to the total open area, they are small, however,
they can be somewhat unpredictable in any given descent
path, so care is needed in order to avoid sudden encounters
that may change or be different due to traffic wear patterns.

If you have sharp edges, and you regulate your speed
safely, none of these will be a problem, but speed control
is essential for forgiveness. This is especially true where trails
converge or intersect and traffic gets narrowed down. A good
example of that is the sector at, and just below, the TGV Quad
where the traffic concentration above Beauvallon Bas, Lower, and
Biere-en-bas create a lot of close encounters.

Another aspect of safety management is the mixed skill levels
sharing spaces as sampled below. Beginners may be struggling
with moguls and gravity, often with unpredictable or sudden directional
changes, while so-called Experts are winging their way down. We
specifically say “So-called Experts” because as fast as they may be
able to go, they are not capable of nimble avoidance and they can be
the most obvious cause of “Close Calls”, or worse. Real Experts
proceed with very cautious speed in any similar traffic concentrations.

Unfortunately, at this very early stage, some of these situations
like the sample above are unavoidable until the very biggest
“Game Changer” becomes available... Nansen.

Once Nansen comes on line, Beginners will have the very best
option possible, a completely Beginner-Friendly descent path
to the Resort Base. Judging by observations alone, we don’t
think that is too far off because Nansen has an gigantic amount
of snowmaking development going on.

History shows that Nansen Haut, Upper is often open on Opening
Day, but typically at a reduced width, and we think this may be
the key to understanding this seasons strategy for Nansen, and
other trails, which may be opening to a near, if not full, width over
as much of its course as possible. Considering the visibility of
Snowmaking on Nansen Bas, Lower, as well, is it maybe, possibly,
could be, that Nansen might open from Summit-To-Base, all at once?
Maybe that’s where the record will be made this season? There’s just so
much snow here that regardless of timing specifics, what is opening seems
to be at finished widths that might not come for a few weeks into
a “Normal” seasons start.

Infrastructure/Investment Project News:

This is a Westward POV of one of the new expansions
of the Summit Grand Manitou lodge that are most
welcome enhancements. There are a total of 4 of
these new spaces, 2 on each level.

From what we understand, the Lowell Thomas High
Speed Quad is very close to Opening. Weather related
delays are being sorted out and final checks/inspections
are being conducted on an ongoing basis.

After 7 months of Lowell Thomas High Speed Quad installation/construction
that was always focused on having its Grand Opening on November 22,
the weather related delays were unexpected, but when you’re
working with Mother Nature those things can happen. We are not sure
if Saturday may be possible for opening, but we get the genuine
feeling from Tremblant Crew members we know, that everyone
is making maximum effort to get Lowell Thomas on-line ASAP.

Weather Notes:

Thank goodness it’s getting warmer...

The return to more seasonable temps for Saturday(up to 0C
by just after lunch) will certainly make things more user friendly,
but whether the crowds can make it out remains to be seen.
There are some news reports that the cold has kept the usual
“Black Friday” shoppers huddled up at home and retailers are
hoping they will be out in droves on Saturday. If that was the case,
Tremblant may well be an absolute treasure for those wise enough
to defer the shopping in order to hit the slopes instead.

Additional Conditions Notes:

Here is a typical surface sample that represents over 90% of
the groomed terrain. The underlaying firmness is there, but
with tuned gear, edge-hold for carving is very adequate, and
exciting speeds, where safe, are easy to hook up and go with.

Looking forward to warming weekend temps, we like to
point out that conditions always seem to get better in
almost all aspects of control and performance as temps
rise.

The fact that the base is so early and well established with very
solid substrates that will hold the cold, means that for at least
the next couple or more days, most upper level and North surfaces
should be relatively mogul resistant because the warmth will simply
not be able to penetrate in any significant way on the wide open terrain.
There may be some warming softness on the Sud, South lower elevations
at and just above the Resort Base, depending on the solar intensity and
temps Mother Nature decides to ultimately cook up.

It’s a Super-Fine Seasons Kick-off
and if possible, you should be here Skiing,
not just reading about it!

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
