This is a 3:46 A.M. “Heads Up" early notice of serious “Cool”...
If you’re up early in Ottawa, Hawksbury(or any other regional place),
and headed for Tremblant this morning, pay attention because this
is the type of night that can sometimes blow the forecast low away.
In addition, when you’re thinking of all the layers you need, don’t forget,
it’s usually -4C cooler at elevations, so add as needed for that.
It is absolutely critical to bundle up and ensure all
seals and overlaps, together with appropriate layers
are simultaneously in place. This Is The Frostbite Zone.

Earlier we wrote:

The needle on the old analogue thermometer indicated -31C at 7:30 A.M.
and at just before 9:00 A.M. The Weather Network graphic of momentary
record shows as below, so we feel totally justified in that regard.

for any group that intend to go out and spend extended time
periods functioning at athletic levels of personal performance,
i.e., “Skiing” or “Snowboarding”.
Extreme care in the details of outer garment fastening, seals
and overlaps are critical for safety and comfort. At these temps,
a 1/8 inch gap, 1 or 2 mm, can produce a white frostbite strip
across your forehead(say around goggle seals), in less than 200
seconds when moving at average descent speeds through the air.
One very real blessing in this forecast is the very low, close to zero wind.
Standing in a safe, trail-side rest spot, directly facing the sun, you
will be able to feel heat in the rays. Any degree of genuine cold is
always, 100%, far easier to handle with no or low wind. Another
potential blessing is the additional new snowfall shown for tonight.

Conditions Notes:
Clinically, Skiing will be fantastic, but at these ambient
temp’s, you do need to be prepared to take advantage of that.
Notwithstanding the cold...
In the open groomed terrain you can expect some really
excellent carving surfaces that should actually respond to
the days rising temps with additional speed and forgiveness.
We generalize this phenomenon by saying that conditions
always seem to get better/easier as temps rise, and today
should be a great example. An increase in the temps up to
a forecasted -12C by just after lunch hour should put this
afternoons performance levels at “Fantastic”, right up to last run.
The new, as of this morning, adjusted total for the snowfall
of the last day is now at 22cm’s, so that may take a day or two
to get surface density compacted to ideal levels. Until then, there
may be enough softness in some zones to generate moguls as
the day evolves. Steeper and narrower trail sections may be more
prone to that, but the wide open boulevards and the gentle slopes
should all remain smooth for the entire day.
Regarding the Sous Bois, Glade, Hors Piste, Un-Groomed...
You will not be able to pry the smiles off
the faces of the Sous Bois Fans with a crow-bar.
This is the kind of game-changer the Glade skiing needed
to make these trails come alive.
That does not mean there are zero hazards though. This is
still only the beginning of January and we have had two recent
“Thermal/Wet” weather events, so under all that overnight snow,
there may still be some naturally occurring glitches, especially
where the wind shaped drifting features with irregular depths.
It is therefore still wise to be cautiously observant in all initial
zonal explorations Hors Piste.
If You Are Far Away And Headed To Tremblant Soon For A Ski Holiday...
You Just Won The Lottery.
For all those who are looking forward to a near-term arrival
at Tremblant, everything you’re seeing here now is the best
news for the prospects of great conditions when you arrive.
Take another look at the 14 day forecast above as well. The
next two weeks are all “Winter” and with very easy temps,
so conditions should do nothing but climb in refinement and
scope of square area quality.
