This is how things are going to look at Tremblant today,
but you are going to need to...

Because,

At just before 7:00 A.M., it’s -30 C, so there will be significant
challenge in early A.M. utility that no photograph can ever convey
in that nice, sunny, beautiful view above.

Yesterday we wrote extensively about Mother Natures
ability to exceed the forecast low morning temp’s with
the combination of weather factors we were seeing, and
that is exactly what has happened.

The forecast was for -24C, the old but totally accurate
analogue thermometer out on the deck rail says -30C at
6:49 A.M., so we can say we got that one right. Believe it
or not, it could easily go another degree lower in the next
hour, but at that point, that makes no difference to the
strategies you will need to effectively cope with the primary
element of this mornings utility.

As far as a clinical discussion of the quality of the Skiing
and Boarding, the Groomed trails will all have “Squeaky”
cold snow that offers some of the very finest performance
characteristics known to the human Ski experience.

If you are properly dressed to handle the temp’s...

A well conditioned front-side carving Expert Skier will be
able to generate lateral turning force in excess of 1G with
no trouble at all.

Beginners will be able to easily execute any basic movements
with sure-footed confidence and Intermediates will find traction
and smoothness that can literally make you a better skier by
the end of the day.

The forecast is one thing(and this one below is only 4 hours old),
but when Mother Nature is shipping in air masses in from
Siberia, the reality can be different, as noted above.

Depending on how things go later on, we expect that
the Summit elevations may not go much over -20C,
but that is not to say that you won’t be able to feel
any warmth out there today. If, If, If you can find a
sunny facing, wind sheltered, safe, trail-side place
to stop, you should feel heat in the sun’s rays within
a minute.

The key to feeling trail-side warmth is wind.
No wind = feel heat.
Wind = feel cold.
This is the essence of “Wind Chill”.

Regarding The Cold, We Are Not Alone...

From an overall perspective, “Graphic A” below
shows an overview of the system as it has been
developing up to today.

This cold air push over the top of the planet is
forecast to remain a dynamic feature for at least
next 2, maybe 3 weeks or so. Below is “Graphic B”,
that is forecast dated for January 21, 2019.

The Southern extent of the cool temps should
reach as far down over the whole Nor-East and
Central regions of the continent as about the
latitude of the “Carolina’s", but... many seasons
of observations show that could change too. Similar
events have produced cooler than average weather
all the way to Daytona, Florida. We think it’s important
to include the Continental Context here so future
readers/ski vacation time-slot researchers using this
record, realize that these types of weather events are not
just local.

The very important thing to acknowledge above
is that the Temperature “Colour Scale” is not
directly attached to a specific, numeric temperature
range the way it is in “Graphic A”.

It is quite likely that the temp’s a week or more
in the future may be warmer than they are now.
When looking at the “Graphic B” colour scale,
it’s going to be relative. While it’s too early to know
exactly how they’ll end up, the 2 week outlook from
The Weather Chanel does show warmer trends forecasted.
(Please Scroll back up to the 2 week “if..” forecast, above.)

The obvious challenge for today is to find every
layer you own, and then put them all on at once.
This is when you get to explore the bottom corners
of your Ski-kit bag for the “Where did I put that
face-mask?” ...you know you’ve seen somewhere?

Beyond that, the Skiing will be absolutely superb
because there is no snow that performs as well
as the “Squeaky” cold, super-dry crystalline groomed
base you will find today.
