Too Easy, X's Two...
Easy Conditions... Easy Weather!
After yesterdays early morning cool, today is going
to seem like a day at the beach with near 20 C warmer
temps at First Tracks!
But Will We Get The “Sunny” Forecast Part?
1.15.19.PB.1217.TGV.Quad.Views.McCulloch.Haut.Upper.Pitch.Forecast.Sample.c.jpg
Even though is forecast to be sunny, so far there’s an
almost completely overcast sky with a bit of brightness
at the horizon peeking through. Will that clear off?
At these temps, it does not really matter as far as conditions
go, it’s already so much more user friendly, at least for today.
Furthermore, the advance of the overcast is also the point
of additional forecasted natural snowfall, so we’d be happy
to see the "more snow” part happen sooner anyway.
Weather Notes:
Easy today, tomorrow and cooling off after tomorrow.
All we can say is that from a utility standpoint, better to
cycle into the “Cool”, than any kind of January Thaw, so
we’re very happy to see a projected run of Pure Winter
sustained sub-zero C, regardless of the range it comes with.
On the bright side, any and all “Cool” now absolutely accumulates
the frost into deeper levels of the Mountains mass, so it will ultimately
act as a source of stored refrigerant for Base support whenever
the days of Spring, or any normal warmer cycles/spikes happen.
As far as the long range outlook, no doubt, there’s quite
a bit more “cool” to come over the next few weeks, so
you’ll need to keep all those layers handy.
Conditions Notes:
It is a generally observed phenomenon that the
characteristics of surface performance in both
traction and glide feel easier with any temperature
rise within the Sub-Zero C range we are experiencing.(**)
A softer, smoother feel, further glide and universally
reliable turning traction should be the basis for excellent
consistency across all skill level rated groomed terrain.
On a more general note, and as only one option for a cold
weather strategy that you may want to consider for later this week...
We suggest that if you’re not keen on cool, consider a later
morning outset and focus on “Last Run”, versus “First Tracks”
because with the low traffic of mid-Jan. weekdays, there is
exceptional all-day durability in smoothness.
At this time of the season, quite literally, we are usually able
to find fresh corduroy tracks for the entire day, often including
“Last Run”. So, the considerably warmer temps that usually take
quite a good jump up by as early as between 09:30 A.M., to
10:00 A.M., and prevail during the balance of “Open” hours, are far
easier to handle than the initial cold of First Tracks.
Where that really makes sense is if you tend to quit for the day
anytime before official Last Run. In that case, your ski hours per
day may be exactly the same, but by starting later, they are in
a warmer temperature range. We have no idea why some folks
seem “Hell-Bent” on First Tracks, quit at 14:30, and then spend
an hour and a half in the bar whining about cold, when a slight
adjustment can make your whole day way easier.
(**) It should be noted that when temps drop, the absolute
performance capability does not change, simply the softness
that rising temps tend to exhibit.
