It’s not complicated.

The way we understand it is that excessive wind velocity
causing chairs to swing as they enter the off-load terminal
set off lift safety sensor warnings that required the closure
of Versant Nord, the North Side. Versant Soleil had been
on “Progressive”, delayed opening due to safety concerns
with the cold/wind as well, so as far as we know, it did
not carry passengers, and was eventually placed on the
closed list.

We support all the safety measures undertaken when the
weather has such significant ramifications for personal
safety. If wind load causes the lift operations to be reduced
to winch, emergency slow speeds or stopped altogether it is
hypothetically possible wind chill can generate medical
emergencies in fractions of an hour with temp’s this low.
It is far better to proactively restrict lift service rather than
have passengers get stuck on a stopped or crawling lift due
to off-load and/or any other safety risks.

Versant Sud, the South Side, remained Officially Open,
however, there is no camera, nor any words, that can
accurately convey the wind-force that was evident in the
actual on-ground experience in this POV above. Mother
Nature is literally awesome at moments like this and Humans
who function well have to have sophisticated exterior garment
shells and internal insulation sufficient to tolerate the
mathematical potential of the wind chill values. It is possible,
and there are many who thrive on this challenge.

Since 1939, Nansen Sets A Standard For Tremblant.

Even When It’s Cold Out. You’ll need to be ready for that.
If your preparations are are sufficient, you should be
rewarded today with unique, and very pure winter conditions.

To begin with, we think you’ll find a great deal of refinement
in the groomed open terrain today with the combination of the
Night-Shift, and the fact that the blowing/drifting has settled down.

Otherwise, it’s "Pure Winter” out there.

We define “Pure Winter” as a series of uninterrupted, sequential
days where the thermometer has not risen above Zero C. We have
that in the books for over two weeks. The benefit is that from the
first day of the series, the Ski/Board conditions usually evolve
upwards in quality every day due to consecutive grooming cycles,
smaller and smaller icy bits, and with more snow, generally
enhanced base over the entire open trail network. Due to the
fact that there is no thaw element that requires recovery, all
Mountain Op’s efforts are focused on refinement.

Sometimes as is the case right now, Mother Nature “contributes"
factors that render the “Unique” part we include in todays references.

The coldness combined with atmospheric factors has rendered
what we would call high friction snow. When you look at the
above Nansen pic. closely, you will see the Skier is using a “skating”
action to add speed over the plateau in the descent path here,
just above the Mi-Chemin intersection. You will also see that
there are “skating” action tracks in the snow surface foreground
which have been made by previous Skiers. This is being done
because the “Glide” characteristics of this Super-Cool snow are
limited, so you see folks making efforts to traverse shallow pitches
when friction overcomes gravity, reducing speed.

Normally, the benefit would be that steeper pitches are easier to
navigate safely as the gravity offset can be very useful in speed
control. That was partially correct, but not totally correct due to
high volumes of blowing and drifting active daytime snowfall.

The turbulent wind was generating significant desert-like waves
of snow accumulation that were difficult to see over the wind driven
surfaces, so you had to be very careful with speed, or you could
quite unexpectedly find yourself ejected skyward. Basically, the
snow waves were like big, lateral moguls, so if you recognized the
pattern, kept your turning efforts tight, and controlled, it was fun
to do jump turns all the way down trails like Versant Sud, South
Side, Beauvallon Haut, Upper, that was much like a natural terrain
park with Mother Nature contour shaping.

Even though the groomed base was smooth to begin with, there
was so much wind and snow that all these things developed rapidly
with advancing open hours.

When you can find a “Last Run" 43cm’s Drift line on P’tit Bonheur
that started out Groomed flat, you know it’s been an unusually
snowy day at Tremblant!

The blowing snowfall stoped through the evening, so everything groomed
afterwards, like our sample above, should be very fine in smoothness,
but we think that with the continued cold, the higher friction may still
be there today.

For Skiers, not so much of a problem because you can skate the
shallow traverses, but for Boarders, you need to shoot the run-outs
and pump the board if you want to traverse without taking out a foot.

Weather Notes:

On the Plus Side...

The driving “In your face" snow is over, so vision factors of
depth perception, contrast and definition will all be vastly
better today.

On the Minus Side...

It’s actually forecast to be a couple of degrees C cooler,
so you will need to use all those layers again and watch
out for signs of frostbite on yourself, as well as those
around you. For example: If someone on the chairlift beside
you has white patches of skin showing, ask them if they know
they’re showing signs of frostbite. There is no feeling in
frozen skin, so they may not know and it’s up to everyone
to look out for each other if that happens.

Conditions Notes:

Within each of the “Green”, “Blue”, and “Black”
respective Groomed Trail ratings....

With the rapid snowfall coming to an end, the overnight
groomed should have the most consistency, and because
there has been solid Sub-Zero’s C for two weeks, there is
an almost ice-free base, so even the zones that got facing
winds yesterday should respond very well and the total,
blended, overall picture holds excellent potential for today.

As noted above, cold-snow friction levels have been noticeable
and we expect to see that again today. We could be wrong, but
if you are properly matching “Skills" to “Challenge”, all you will
need to keep in mind is adapting quickly with respect to steepness
and the speed you find is the key to a la Carte enjoyment when
you explore responsibly.

There may be softness in the top layers that makes for some
edge-catching hazard, but again, with light work-week traffic,
we do not expect much in the way of mogul formations.

For Experts, the Sous Bois, Glades, Hors Piste, Un-Groomed...
has really seen some impressive gains in the depth, especially
where the wind has generated back-fill around topographical
contours and in the narrow, tall tree-lined trails where the
trees act like wind scoops that draw the snow in and let it settle
on the surfaces below where it’s largely sheltered.

Due to the fact that the weather delivered so much snow
yesterday afternoon when the traffic had already diminished
a lot, there should even be some very sweet powder zones
this morning. With light work-week traffic, you may be able
to find them for the next few days!

Scroll back up to the P’tit Bonheur sample that shows
a 43cm’s drift zone on the open trail when the Official
Snowfall Total says 8cm’s. Imagine how those may have
been even greater where the wind sheltered spots did not
have the direct facing force!

page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
