2/4/19 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Mid-Evening, Prime-Time, Apres Ski Edit, under construct @ 8:53 P.M.

Today was a...

“Fly Under The Radar Day Of Universal Groomed Trail Excellence”.

WOW...

When we wrote earlier today:

"If the precipitation does not occur over Mountain
elevations in either the form or volume forecasted
for ground levels, today could actually be surprisingly
excellent and easy skiing, not to mention, comparatively “Warm”!”

We don’t think we could have been more precise if
we had been able to write that as a script for today
with Mother Nature herself as co-author.

Today was just one of those handful of days in a whole season
that “Sneaks Up On You” and delivers a skiing experience that is
truly extraordinary.

Atmospheric conditions were downright “Hostile” for photography,
so right off the top we have to declare that it would be very, very
difficult, nearly impossible, to adequately capture any real sense
of the etherial beauty of the Mountain or the liquid smoothness
of the magically snow white groomed trails. For one thing, “Cloud
Particles” that were in no way hard for human eyes to handle,
coated lenses with trillions of micro-dots. We spent most of the
time with goggles up, and no vision problems at all, but camera’s
have no way to “Blink” and clear themselves, so it was very hard to
get clean shots and opportunities were very limited.

However...

Virtually every square inch of the groomed trails was near flawless
and the warmer temp’s only enhanced the spectacular carving
performance that could turn the best conditioned athlete’s quad
muscles into jello with the addictive consistence of reliable edge-set
that existed for the entire day.

In the alternate, the ease of control movement initiation for absolute
Beginners or anyone who just wanted to cruise around easily could not
have been much more ideal. These surfaces literally make any skier look
good by allowing such little resistance and so much grip that you could
only summarize them as being “Instantly Responsive, And Totally Forgiving”.
It was hard to make mistakes, but if you did, recoveries were an easy “Snap".

There is no question that today was one of the Season’s very top
carving performance days and several hours after “Last Run” the
muscles are still feeling “Tweaked” from the workout.

For the most part the entire day was foggy but surprisingly dry.

Here is an example of what was more-or-less going on with
the weather all day. Skiing in and out of the cloud, which by
the way for us anyway, was completely dry until Last Run
coming up the Duncan Quad when there was a wee bit of
sleety drizzle starting up.

Tomorrow’s forecast still has a lot of wild-cards, most of
them actually through the rainy night tonight, but just
maybe, there will be some positive surprises there by the
end of the day. We’ll have to wait and see...

We have had a “Plus" thermal-free period of just around a month of
steady sub-zero C's, so conditions have been free of any kind of any
significant icy bits for weeks.

By historical standards that is a fairly long running stretch, so we’re
thankful for that, however, it is a common winter weather phenomenon
to see thaw events periodically, and it certainly looks like we’re
going to experience about a 24 hour warm cycle over the next day.

Environment Canada Weather Warning:

Please Note: The possibility exists that we may see very little of
this over Mountain Elevations as the cloud cover is very low over
the Mountain, looking like fog, and precipitation usually falls below
the cloud, not in the cloud.

Weather Notes:

There are just way too many variables to be
completely predictable in this scenario.

One typical observation with freezing rain precipitation
is that it is not erosive like regular rain. It may coat things,
but it does not wash them away. See more on this point in
following Conditions Notes.

What we are likely to see is that after Last Run, the Gondola
cabins may be removed from the main cable in order to
prevent the weight and operational restrictions caused by
any icy coating.

Conditions Notes:

For Today’s Open Hours Specifically:

In the Groomed Terrain:

We don’t think there will be much functional difference
over the Groomed terrain as traffic activity should help
keep surfaces loose, and...

If the precipitation does not occur over Mountain
elevations in either the form or volume forecasted
for ground levels, today could actually be surprisingly
excellent and easy skiing, not to mention, comparatively “Warm”!

In the Un-groomed, Sous Bois, Glades, Hors Piste, et al:

It may be a different story if, if, if, depending on the
quickness or thickness of any freezing coated surfaces
developing. For this reason, we think the Open Trails
in this category may see a change during the day as
the Ski Patrol monitor safe conditions. If things remain
Open, then effects may be minimal.

General Freezing Rain Observations:

For the vast majority of Open Groomed terrain, we do
not consider freezing rain to be a long term negative
because it is not erosive, so eventually, even if inconvenient,
it gets ground up in repeated grooming cycles and
though it may be course in terms of granule size,
eventually it is absorbed into the loose top layers.

In the Sous Bois, Glades etc., the story is far different
because a surface coating can become a barrier that
inhibits turning ability. The coating is never strong enough
to support Skier or Boarder weight, so as you break through
it, your Skis or board become submerged below it and then
the problem can become having enough leverage or muscle
to break out of it from below. From experience, we can tell
you this is where the problem lies because it takes almost
super-human strength to reverse leverage Ski or Board tips
up through an icy crust to initiate even one turn, let alone
an entire descent path. You just don’t have all the forces of
Gravity that help break through it on the way down, when
you’re trying to break through it as you come back up to
make any turns.

The net result can be that the safety restrictions or temporary
trail closures after freezing rain are often in the Un-groomed,
or Hors Piste trail categories.

Notwithstanding all that, the Skiing and Boarding on the groomed
trails can remain very, very fine throughout any freezing rain event.

From a personal utility standpoint, vision and staying dry are
2 areas where adapting can make all the positive difference
you need to have fun anyway, so get out your Descente Poncho,
and your Yellow Lens Safety Glasses and be ready to deploy them
if necessary.

Repeats from Above:

Please Note: The possibility exists that we may see very little of
this over Mountain Elevations as the cloud cover is very low over
the Mountain, looking like fog, and precipitation usually falls below
the cloud, not in the cloud.

If the precipitation does not occur over Mountain
elevations in either the form or volume forecasted
for ground levels, today could actually be surprisingly
excellent and easy skiing, not to mention, comparatively “Warm”!

If that were the case, then the worst of it could be the ground
level driving if roads are slippery from icy coatings. We’re sure
the Road Crews will be out in full force with sand and salt, but
extreme caution in all highway transits is warranted.

We’re hoping for a lot more of this yesterday “Last Run” sample
for today...

Obviously a lot of dynamics, wild-cards, variables,
tipping points, one way or the other, unpredictable,
as yet to be seen, potential outcomes when the
weather and precipitation are all so close to Zero C
over a Mountain that can have considerable differences
at any side or elevations.

Ultimately, it may take a couple of days to sort through
everything, but in the mean-time, at least it’s relatively
warm out, so for a little while things should be soft.

they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
