2/8/19 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Early Apres Ski Edit under construction at 7:41 P.M.

A Very, Very, Rare Circumstance...

The velocity of the wind across the Summit was
greatly under-forecast and it was so forceful that
Versant Sud had to be closed.

This was a legitimate safety concern.

There was sufficient force to hold an average Adult
from descending over and down the main crests of
Beauvallon and Nansen.

By Last Run, it briefly put Tremblant into a difficult position
because it was literally not safe to allow people to descend
and at the very same time, it made it unsafe to operate the
Gondola for downloading. Consequently a small group was
stranded at the Summit temporarily until there was a lull in
the winds that allowed the Gondola to be put back into motion
and passengers safely delivered to the Versant Sud, South base.
(We specifically support Tremblant’s “Safety First” policy in this and
all other cases where there may be momentary discomfort in order
to ensure everyone gets home safe and sound.)

That was merely the final "coup de grâce” for the day in the sense
that the Official Open Trail List had been revised downward twice
to the final number of 39. Frankly, it was not an easy day for anyone
and all our optimistic hopes below in the original post for “Best Case
Scenarios" were countered with the “Worst Case" caveats we also
allowed for.

The early morning conditions were actually quite fair, with numerous
positive feedbacks we got from those in attendance then, but as soon
as the windy weather front moved in at noon hour, safe conditions
began to deteriorate.

(Above: You can see some of, but not all of the snow motion in the air
that looks like a white filter against the background, and as a “fuzzy” layer
of very rapidly moving snow over the foreground just behind the Ski in
this POV looking up P’tit Bonheur from its lower, final crest. Skiing down to
this point was as if you were in a bubble of stationary air because your descent
speed was similar to the tail-wind, so it was freaky smooth and quiet skiing,
while all around you Mother Nature was blasting the rest of your surroundings!
Very, Very Surreal, but a super-cool, as in interesting and most unusual, personal
experience!)

Fortunately... there was snowfall prior to the really windy bits and
that was beneficial because there appears to have been just enough
warmth in the wet exposed base so that the new snow bonded very
quickly. It could actually be carved with enthusiasm, but it had an
unusually high friction rate that made it “Grabby” and there was a
distinct lack of “Glide” that you had to almost push against. On the
flip-side, it was a great workout!

Above And Below:

Optimized Surfaces happen every single day at Tremblant and today
was no exception with these 2 samples of Beauchemin and Nansen,
both in very fine, smooth shape, and, notwithstanding the most unusual
atmospheric conditions.

No doubt, it was an “Interesting” day in many ways, but not
easy for anyone, so all in all, one of a very very few days over
decades that we would not be left wishing for “One More Run”.

For Tomorrow:

-11C, Sunny Sky, BUT... same or similar wind component,
so dressing adequately is going to be critical, and we may see
another day of changing lift and/or open trails during open hours.

---------- Archival Updates To 2.8.19 Open Trails Lists -------------------

Please Note: There were 2 REVISED Open Trails Lists
due to extreme weather conditions during the course
of the Open Hours today. We are attaching them below.
# 1, @ 48(*) Open Trails, # 2 @ 39(*) Open Trails.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s what we did all day at Tremblant yesterday, and...

we expect to repeat this all day long today...

We are hoping that the overnight high temp has not seen
too much rainy volume, and that there is a “Spring-Like”
softness similar to yesterday.

With such very high quality in the smoothness to begin with,
the added performance enhancement of soft top layers
generated tremendous lateral grip potential and it was
really easy to carve extremely high angles of inclination
without any blow-out fears at all. Obviously, carrying that
forward to today is automatically going to make things fun
to begin with, the real question is how long can those conditions
be sustained in high winds and dropping temps.?

Above/Below:
We were fortunate yesterday to meet up with a group of KLM/AMS,
Royal Dutch Airlines Crew(4 Skiers, 1Boarder), on a YUL layover.
They were very good sports about participating in a photo run on
Nansen, and we did our best to get some action shots. What we
hope to do eventually post the good ones as a group in a special
Tremblant Geographic topic because it’s actually a very good point
to highlight for the great Skiing opportunities that are so close to
the YUL major airport for Crews that have time for a day on the slopes.

Weather Notes:

Warm To Cool...

This is a very similar looking pattern to the one
we saw last, in that the heat is through the night
and it cools during the mid-to-late day.

We think there will be enough residual warmth in the surfaces
for the mornings softness to extend to Last Run, however,
it is possible that there could be a fair degree of building
solidity underfoot.

The velocity of the wind gusts means that even though it’s
relatively warm out, there is going to be some Wind Chill
so outer layer seals and overlaps are going to be critical to
keep those pesky drafts from getting through.

The direction of the wind and its gusts is going to start out
rising over the Summit from the Soleil quadrant and by around
noon, swing a bit so it will seem strongest from over McCulloch
and just about right up the middle of Beauvallon. Depending on
how much snow there is with the squall system, there could
be some considerable back-fill on Versant Nord, the North side,
as the wind pushes over the top and may begin to drop snow
into the sheltered lee-side slopes.

You’ll have the wind at your back on TGV, and coming up on
the north, well, it could seem very forceful as you approach
the Summit crest on either Duncan or Lowell T. Be ready for that.

Conditions Notes:

Both this warm cycle, as brief as it is, and the last
one, have been unusual in that the warm/wet bits have
been at night, with afternoon cooling. Usually, it would be
coolest at night, with any warming peaking at just after noon,
so we have the opposite to what we’d normally expect in a
typical warm-up cycle.

The last time this happened about 4 days ago, we ended
up with the morning softness having enough thermal momentum
to sustain soft carving layers all day, even with the dropping temp’s,
and we hope that is the most likely scenario for today as well.
We could be wrong, and with such a strong Sou-West wind forecast,
that is one factor that could certainly and literally, cool things off in a hurry.

The wind is definitely peaking in the Versant Sud, South Side,
Old Village of Mt.T. here and there are moments when it sounds
a bit like a “Howler”. On that basis we might not be surprised
to see some lift issues if those gusty velocities get over safe
limits, so as an extension of that, there could also be changes
to the Open Trail List.

Bottom line... you’ll need to be ready for anything, but when
increasing firmness that could include quickly re-freezing surfaces
are any possibility, sharp edges could make all the difference
to both the Fun and Safety factors of your day.
