2/12/19 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Late Evening Apres Ski Edit, Under Construct @ 10:55 P.M.

If you were an Expert, and if your Skis had tuned edges,
then you could do this all day on select(**a, b) terrain at Tremblant.

(**a) There were still some slick and/or icy bits, zones and partial
runs scattered around, we think mostly generated or perpetuated
by direct wind exposures that over time, have had enough
concentrated energy to almost polish the solid base, giving it an
icy feel that you would want to avoid.

(**b) There were multiple, very naturally good-to-excellent, carving
trails that were in some cases very obvious, in other cases “Fly Under
The Radar”, but all excellent to discover and repeat as often as you
might have the muscle for.

It is very necessary to declare that Tremblant conditions need to be
framed in a regionally relative form that acknowledges there has been
warm, sometimes a bit wet, weather, for about the last 6 days over the
entire North Eastern sector of North America. In that regard, Tremblant’s
Northerly Latitude has kept the heat and the wet to shorter durations
than many more-southern areas, and in that context, conditions are
comparatively speaking, very fine.

Within that “very fine” there is also “excellent”.

Here is an example of “excellence":

Skis are shown laterally across the trail to show scale of width.

Not only is Marie-Claude groomed to the widest we can
ever remember seeing it at(over 20 feet wide here?),
but look closely at the Ski Boot marks that left imprints
in the trail when we set up the skis for this pic. The ski
boots are imprinting on pure, all wall-to-wall, top-to-bottom
SNOW. If it was icy, there would not be anything soft enough
to imprint on, so lets repeat that... Marie-Claude is all SNOW.

Wide, Groomed Flat, All Snow, Easy Pitch Angle... Damn near perfect.

So if anyone tells you Tremblant has been nothing but icy...
as we overheard in several chairlift rants, this is a real, factual,
actual, right now, before the big storm, all snow, all go, and
absolutely fabulous, and amazingly, an almost as easy as Nansen
“Proof Of Excellence” sample. Period.

This is potentially a pivotal day in this Tremblant Ski Season.

So, Today’s Operative Word Is “Optimized”.

Not only is there a very high level of Optimized refinement
within the open, groomed terrain that you can enjoy all day today
if you’re already here, but there is an Official, Winter Snowstorm
Weather Warning which has the possibility to yield somewhere
between 25 to 40 cm’s of fresh, new snowfall within a forecast
30 hour period, starting at about 16:00hrs./4:00 P.M. today.

In our opinion, this may be where the current level of “Optimized”
groomed super-smooth base is in a position to receive one of the
seasons single largest snowfall events that in turn, can derive
“Optimized” benefit, simply because it has such a fundamentally
smooth and universally glitch-free base/foundation to fall on.

Imagine This With Forecast 40cm’s Of Fresh Powder!!!

Despite, maybe even because of, the recent thermal event of
about 4 days ago, the base is actually in Super-Solid shape
to not only receive the forecasted snowfall, but also to produce
a remarkable Ski/Board experience when you take into account
the level of refinement from the last 3 Night-Shift Grooming cycles
that could be potentially integrated with such a massive, single
snowfall. This is another instance where if we are right, there
is every good Ski/Board reason for you to run away from home
this very moment, if possible, to get to Tremblant before the
driving gets really messy. We hope you can be here for even a
chance at what might be “Epic” Powder Days, depending on the
storms timing for possibly both tomorrow and Thursday morning.

Of course... we could be wrong. Weather forecasting is not
a guarantee, but it’s technically a win-win scenario anyway.
If the big snowfall does not happen the way it’s forecasted,
then you still get all the benefits of the current excellence
in optimized grooming refinement, if the big snow happens,
then you may think you’ve been magically transported to
Ski-Heaven.

With the indicated Easterly Winds, they should be rising up
over the Mountain directly over P’tit Bonheur and Duncan,
crossing the Summit towards McCulloch, so in this case
the South Side may get some Lee-side drift-in. The most
complicating factor is the forecast wind velocity. That may well
determine how much sticks on the wide open trails of Versant
Nord and the Edge Sector, but even then, some of the smaller,
tree-lined trails as well as the Sous Bois/Glades can gather quite
a bit of passing snow.

It is likely that any deep and/or rapid snowfall accumulations
will favour Experts, but Mountain Crews will have as much of the
main Green Trails groomed flat as soon and as often as they can.
All Guests may need to be patient for a couple of days for Crews
to achieve mogul resistant groomed, compacted, trail surface density.

Conditions Notes:

In the Groomed:
Today itself should offer an incrementally refined version of
yesterday, with fewer and fewer firm or icy bits, especially
given light, mid-week traffic. There is no doubt that tuned
edges are still a major asset, but there is an increasing level
of forgiveness that means they're not quite so critical now.

In the Sous Bois, Hors Piste, Glades and Un-Groomed:
The very cool overnights seem to be cooking out some
of the substrate crusts that have been in the Sous Bois
recently. We took a small detour Mid-Lowell T. the day
before yesterday and what we noticed was that the strata
are not nearly as hard to break through as they were in the
previous week. Obviously, the return of many of these trails
or glade areas to “Open” status reflects the return of safe
conditions, so it follows that hazards are greatly reduced.

Repeat:

will favour Experts, but Mountain Crews will have as much of the
main Green Trails groomed flat as soon and as often as they can.
All Guests may need to be patient for a couple of days for Crews
