The good news is that today should see a 20C rise in temp’s
by just after lunch hour that will make a huge difference in
comfort. We may perhaps even see noticeable differences
in performance as well if there’s any resistance in the mornings
super-cool cryogenic snow that gets eliminated as the temp
rises.
As an aside...
It seems a bit odd to us that the Weather Forecast Models
have not, or are not capable of rendering trends a bit closer
to the actual temp values when there are multiple repeats
of overnight lows that are considerably below the forecast.
Last nights low, for example, was supposed to be -21C,
and as you can see below, it actually got down to -30C.
This is a pattern of difference we’ve seen more than once
recently, so our question to Professional Meteorologists
would be why is the forecast out in such a similar way so often?

What we think you will find today is a Dual-Personality day
where the morning will obviously be quite cold, and then
at about 11:00 A.M., it will seem as though a quite rapid
transformation to much warmer temps occurs as the sun
gets close to its apex for the day.
This Dual-Personality may also seem apparent in Ski conditions
between surfaces this morning that may have some resistance
in them, to a near magical increase in glide and natural descent
speed that may also occur at about 11:00 A.M.
What is happening is that the molecular thin layer of lubricating
water that normally generates low resistance “Glide” in temps down
to around somewhere in the mid-minus 20’s, does not occur to the
same degree at -30C, so we feel that loss of lubrication as friction.
As soon as the temps get a chance to work into the surfaces even
a small amount, the passage of Ski/Board over the surface can
once again generate the lubricating water along the running surface
of the Skis/Board edges, and we get the glide and the speed back.
It can sometimes take a bit longer on the way back up, perhaps
due to the super-cool needing some time to be displaced by heat
which may take more time than the other way around because of
convection, i.e., “Heat Rises”, that may make in more difficult for
the heat to go downward against the ambient cold, but when there
is a 20C rise, our experience shows there is typically, a very noticeable
difference in improved glide factors.
None of these differences are negatives because super-cool
snow makes steepness easier and warmer snow makes gentle
slopes faster, so they both have user-friendly characteristics.
However... the human comfort factor is obviously easier with
anything attached to “Warm”, so from that standpoint, this
afternoon is going to seem “Hot” in both temp. perception,
and most likely in speed/performance as well.
