Mountain Crews will be doing another All-Nighter grooming
as much as they can in the hours they have available.
As “Day 2” of the return to sub-zero temps, tomorrow should
see a quite noticeable increase in the scope and depth of loose
top layers for normalized Ski/Board performance across all
skill level terrain. The added snow from the periodic squall
activity as pictured above will give the morning corduroy
a more natural feel when integrated into the existing granular.

What Was Soft And Warm Yesterday, Is Now Cool And “Firm”.

The important part is that in terms of covered square area
there has not been any significant loss for 2 reasons:
1) There’s just too much snow to begin with.
2) There’s a tremendous amount of supporting frost reserve in the base.

Mountain Crews worked an All-Nighter to deliver primary
qualities of smoothness as temp’s fell to below Zero C, and
there was a simultaneous arrival of a small amount of
snowfall, so the net result should be a good basic quantity
of loose top layers over most of the Groomed Terrain.
Typically, the emphasis is on the Green Trail ratings so
Beginners and Intermediates have descent lines that are
good for instructional/learning/practice purposes, however,
there should be good initial quality in all Blue and Black
rated Groomed trails as well.

The default is “Smooth”. No one can do anything about the weather,
but with “Smooth” as a fundamental component, almost everything
else becomes easier when Mother Nature drops the temps quickly.

There are going to be Icy Bits.

Your best friends today will be tuned edges.

((#)This is a file shot of a pair of used FIS Slalom Race Skis we got
off an Internet Trading Site for(can’t remember exact?) about $200.00
They eat “Icy” for breakfast and when many are slip-sliding around,
they still carve like a Surgeon with a sharp scalpel. They make any day fun,
but we save them for days like today in order to extend their life
and utility for “Firm” conditions. An interesting side-note is that this
pic. was take on Nansen Haut, Upper, and that’s another way we
recommend handling days like today, i.e., default down in terrain
selection to more gentle pitch angles in order to safely retain
performance and control. Once you’ve established an initial safe level
of personal terrain capability, gradually move up.)

Weather Notes:

Conditions Notes:

The Skiing is very technical because the looseness
in the top layers is relatively shallow on this first day
after a rapid temperature drop, so you need to apply
directional force gently and with great sensitivity to
the available grip as opposed to gravity. If you don’t have
good edges, you’re bringing a pea-shooter to a gun fight.

There is a high degree of probability that the Open Trail
count may change during the course of the day. You will
see below that there are multiple “Progressive” Trail Openings
due to weather factors outside human control. The Ski Patrol
will be evaluating surfaces all day you should obey all Ski Patrol
Hand Posted Trail Notifications that supersede regular signage.

The biggest asset in terms of groomed Mountain Logistics is “Smooth”,
so today will still be great fun if you can adapt to find the safe
limits of performance within your skill sets!

(**) If possible get your Skis/Board tuned at Tremblant.
They have what is arguably the very best CNC Ski Tuning
machine in North America. They can justify that because
of the volume in the Ski-Rental inventory, but you can take
advantage with their “Crazy-Good” overnight discount.

Drop them off when you check in, and when you pick
them up in the morning for “First Tracks”, you’ll think
someone gave you new skis!

We are not sponsored by them. We pay like everyone else,
but we know the very experienced Crew and we’re happy
to support them because of the results.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
