3/31/19 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Late Evening, Apres Ski Edit @ 10:35 P.M.

Just so you know right up front that there’s a positive outcome here...

Let's Start With “At The End Of The Day".

Today Was A Very Fine Recovery From Yesterday’s Mish-Mosh Of
Saturated, Snowy-Frozen-Rainy, Heavy, Thick, “Stuff”.

Mountain Crews did a great job of establishing a smooth
base on all the primary Green, Blue and some Black rated
trails that form the core boulevards of all sectors, and the
snow came as forecast, with very beneficial results.

What seems to have happened is that the grooming was
done as the temps dropped, and that was followed by a
natural snowfall layer. When you added it all up, it rendered
out a Super Smooth and Super Fast finished product that
had all the firmness of the re-chilled Sub-Zero temps, but
all the traction and softness of the new snow over top.

Above: If you look closely at the bottom right corner, as well
as just to the left of the Ski Pole handles, you’ll see faint
Grooming Corduroy lines. The reason they are “Faint”, i.e.,
hard to see, is that they are covered by the layer of new
snowfall that basically filled in the lines and added a beautiful
buffer layer over the re-solidified Corduroy. This top layer of
new snow was easily able to remain in place virtually all day
due to it’s slight internal humidity that gave it just the right
amount of natural adhesive and that adhesion was further enhanced
by the groves in the Corduroy that allowed it to stick in place
like velcro. It was wonderfully traffic resistant all day long.

Below:

Here is a typical crowd scene from Sunday afternoon at Tremblant
that also shows the scope of the wide ranging smoothness and
wall-to-wall coverage that could be found over the entire groomed
trail array:

Where is everyone? It amazes us to no end that the weather forecast
seems to freak out so many people who don’t seem to show up unless
there’s mega-sunny(???), when the Skiing is so good and the weather
is actually very mild and easy, especially when compared to the deep
cool of winter now past. While yesterday was unpredictable due to
numerous tipping points and temperature/precipitation Flip-Flops,
today was always going to be far more certain with the return to
well below Zero C.

There’s always one enthusiastic group that turns out no matter
the weather!

Unfortunately, the foggy, atmospherically challenged weather prevented
us from getting the race action shots we’d hoped for, but never-the-less,
Racers from all over were very visible for the entire weekend, and after
their event was wrapped up this afternoon, we got this snap shot from
the Gondola overhead as they swarmed the course on McCulloch in their
great numbers and had it cleared off in minutes.

Race Courses always get superb treatment prior to the event
so here’s one of your biggest clues to where you’re going
to find a really excellent run tomorrow!

Speaking of Tomorrow, -10 C overnight, with “Sunny”
forecast and a rise in temp’s to -1C. “Brisk” Nor-West to
North winds, but with Sun and -1C, winds are not critical.

We heard rumours through the grapevine that Mountain Op’s
may be working on more of the Black Diamond trail grooming
tonight...

We hope that’s true and Crews can get grooming out to some of
the further reaching Mountain corners as it seems like there’s a lot
of potential to level out some of the re-froze choppy bits while the
base is still so thick. Time will tell...

Hope to see you on the slopes tomorrow!

Conditions might be described as “Complicated”
due to a big bunch of snow, followed by a freezing
rainy mix that’s unfortunately, still going on to variable
degrees even though it’s supposed to be snow by now.

The best part are the temp’s that dropped, so at least there’s
predictability in the Grooming outcome where Crews were
able to get to it, and we’re certain that the default should
be the usual post-thermal “Smooth”. Smooth is what makes
everything else so much easier to handle, especially on
a re-freeze cycle.

Conditions Notes:

The Official Trail Data PDF does not show the snowfall
from yesterday for some reason, however we would
estimate the depth at somewhere between 10 and 15 cm’s.
(There was a lot of wind at the same time so drifting
makes it difficult to know exactly what the stat. total is.(#))
The mix that ended up when blended with the sleety,
semi-frozen rainy afternoon added thickness and mogul
challenge for everyone.((#)We hope they add it in as we
approach a seasonal total/overall record @ 600cm’s.)

What we liked about it though, was the very evident
“Construction Grade” packable density that we feel should
make a very solid and thick additional strata in the final
groomed integration of it all, a lot of which we hope guests
should see today.

The pre-existing seasonal frost level below has not gone anywhere
so it continues to support the entire Mountains still excellent
100% full winter coverage, and if the snow falls today as forecast,
there is a good possibility that within the following overnight
grooming cycles, we could experience a very nice return to
overall smoothness.

The bottom line on conditions today is to stick within
your realistic skill level terrain, or one level down, until
safe passage is confirmed. As the temps drop, any
un-groomed zones are likely to be far more difficult if
choppy tracked patterns get locked in by freezing.

There are always going to be sweet spots, zones, even
whole sectors, so it’s just a matter of locating what you
can safely work with, then stick with that until your confidence
rises, and/or conditions evolve favourably.

When there are any forms of adverse weather generated
unique conditions, consult with Tremblant Info.Ski Crews
at the Summit Gondola Off-Load zone, or anywhere else
you see them. They can play a critically important part
in your enjoyment by directing you towards terrain
ideally suited to your particular needs or abilities.

The basic forecast starts at “Smooth”
over the main Alpine Trail routes. If
we get the snow, there should be an
added degree of softness, sort of like
icing on the cake.
