We are not quite sure how/where to start this Apres Ski report
because it was such an unusual, interesting, and thoroughly
enjoyable, multi-faceted day.
Perhaps due to this being a Ski Conditions record, let’s start with
a very basic, single, best “sign" of great Spring Skiing...

Powder Carving Lines All Day ??? You Bet !!!
Part of the “interesting” elements, were the weather dynamic.
If you consider “Dynamic” to have any component of motion,
then there was no shortage of “motion” in many aspects of
today’s weather.
It was “Breezy” across the Summit... all day.

How Fast Is “Howling” ???
The weather was moving like a freight train overhead
and the vigorous wind was pushing massive quantities of snow
over the Summit from Versant Sud, the South Side, to the
Nord, North Side.
The wind speed was not a negative factor as far as we were concerned,
the temps are mild to begin with, so it was just a matter of having
zips done all the way up. Additionally, because the weather dynamic was
so interesting, even fascinating, to watch, not to mention the continuous
trail surface “Refreshment” that was going on, we actually though it was
beneficial to the uniqueness of a very special day.

however the Versant Sud, South Side and Versant Soleil did
have some softening at lower base levels.
In our experience it was all “Winter”, dry and light snow, but it
had an unusually high level of “Drag” or “Friction”, over the whole
Mountain, to the point that is was a quite significant topic of feedback
on all the lift rides up. Practically, it just made all the steep runs easy with
such a dramatic gravity offset. Boarders were having to contend with the
friction on plateau’s, but where you had good, steep, pitch angle, the
enhanced ability to control speed was a big asset for easy descent safety.

by the minute, sometimes in seconds. You could see the swirling
cloud being whipped around by Mother Nature as if it was in a giant
power blender gone wild.
For April 3, the Skiing was fantastic. If it had been January 3,
or February 3, or March 3, the skiing would still have been
rated as fantastic. There were groomed trail powder lines all
day long.

The calendar says “April”, but so-far,
Mother Nature says “Hold on, not quite yet, if you please..."
If you are lucky enough to be Skiing at Tremblant right now,
but you frame your reference within 20 year averages, you’d
be hard pressed to think it was anywhere near a usual April.
There’s just way too much snow around here to think it’s much
more than early-to-mid March after about 3 big Blizzards.
This is evident over the entire Mountain footprint and if you
have much in the way of annual Tremblant experience, what
you’ll notice is something like all the trees look shorter. That
might sound strange, but because we take so many pictures
on a routine basis, the trail-side retained snowpack is so deep
that there are literally spots we use for diagnostic assessments
where features we normally see are buried under so much
snow, they’re just not visible.
Perhaps one of the very best examples of just how unusual
this retained snowpack is in absolute depth can be shown
by this pic. of Trail #80, Versant Nord, North Side, “Windigo”,
as seen from its intersection with Trail #78, Fuddle-Duddle.
We don’t think we’ve seen so much snow laying in this sector, ever.

pictures of it showing contrast in the clearest way, back on 3.29.19,
however it is exactly the very same up to last run yesterday. If you
are a Tremblant Mogul/Sous Bois/Glade Fan with experience on this
trail, you’ll instantly see this remarkable fill-in that you’ve maybe
never seen before. Usually, there is about a metre and a half, say
4 to 5 feet final crest off of Windigo, down to the Fuddle-Duddle
trail surface in the foreground of this pic., but obviously here, the
whole zone in filled in with snow until the two trails are flush and
almost seamlessly filled in to a level transition. Very, very rare, if ever.
In the Meantime...
Two of Tremblant’s Summit Front-Side Double Black Diamonds,
trails # 13,14 Vertige and Zig Zag, are periodically on/off line
as conditions permit. Today, “Progressive” status shows them
back on at some point, subject to Ski Patrol confirmations.

Weather Notes:
So far every day that has supposed to have gotten warmer
has NOT done that on the Mountain, so winter continues to
hang on by a thread, day by day. It’s snowing here now,
with intermittent brightness, but we hope it stays overcast
at least because the shade seems to be enough to keep
solar energy from tipping the surfaces into any kind of thaw.

Conditions Notes:
A “Soup du jour” of late winter and early spring surfaces
within the Groomed inventory that all have the very basic
and universal 100% of optimal winter coverage.
In the Sous Bois, a mix of early morning firm, not necessarily
froze, yielding to later day soft when thermal sources have
time to work softening.
Whatever temperature related surface qualities exist, they
are completely separate and distinct from the 100% coverage,
so if/when it all softens, there’s just so much square area of
terrain to explore it seems a bit bizarre for this time of year.
The other thing we’ve noticed and previously reported on,
is that with this depth of base so well preserved and intact,
much of Tremblant seems to be blended together in a way
that we can best describe as “Seamless”. It’s very difficult
to describe and cameras fall way short, but in summary,
the experience of the day can only come like this when
there is record snow retention, and we certainly have all of that.
The ambient overcast daylight has been a challenge for photography
so in many cases we’ve had to burn up/turn up white balance,
highlights and contrast just to get adequate surface detail.
Here below is such a recovered image from 40 hours ago on Devils River
and despite the shortcomings of a long telephoto combined with
the dull lighting, it still effectively conveys the performance capability
of this great example of all the groomed Black Diamonds right now.

Notwithstanding the morning firmness that may require more
applied control move sensitivity, if you’ve got well tuned edges...
You can do this all day at Tremblant... if you have the muscle!
