A most surprising day!

Regarding our interpretation of the Weather
Forecast, In the original post below, we wrote:

"We think there is some probability it could
remain dry most, if not all day.”

Here is an average scene depicting how close it was to rain
and how close it was to “remain dry most, if not all day.”(#)

We got that one right!

So then, to continue on with the surprises,
we need to explain that they were in two
different areas, the first being the sunny
weather, the second being the technical
snow surface performance.

It could be argued that today may have been one
of the top 10 technical Carving Performance days
of this season.

The best way to illustrate that is with this pic. below.
Please note that this is only one example of dozens.
This level of carving engagement was typical of the
day, but this is the best naturally lit pic we got showing
well defined detail.

The performance shown above is perfectly obvious to
any experience Skier and we can add to that by judging
it to be within the top 10 days of this season, a subjective
assessment for sure, but no doubt, we think the pictured
evidence speaks for itself.

We said there were dozens of superb carving zones
and these 2, above and below show Trail # 18, Sud,
South McCulloch, representing both Black Diamond
terrain, as well as suitability for both Skiers and
Snowboarders.

To summarize, it was surprisingly great day to find excellence
in almost every single corner of Tremblant’s wonderfully
groomed array of open trails, all under a surprisingly sunny
sky that was just about as far away from “Rainy” as you can get!

For Tomorrow???

Sunny and Hot!

Up to +10 C will absolutely feel hot
compared to any day since sometime last fall!

(#)Just to be fair, we do acknowledge that apparently
there was a very small, localized, 5 minute rain shower
very early this morning around the Lowell Thomas
Quad Base that was completely inconsequential to
the days overall dry and sunny.

77(*) Open Trails On Versant Nord, North and Versant Sud, South Sectors at #Tremblant .

Please Note: There appears to be an anomaly in the Open Hour
Specifications for versant Nord, the North Side, in the Official
PDF Trail Status Data that shows the Expo Quad not open until
10:00 A.M. and the Lowell Thomas Quad closing at 3:15. We
believe these may be data input errors.
------ 8:30 A.M. Update: Via Web Cam, we have observed passenger
traffic on the Expo Quad. It is our belief that the actual Nord, North

Open @ 8:30, closed at 4:00 P.M. --------

This basic retained abundance of snow is evident
within all near and far corners of the Mountains footprint.

Tipping point temperatures have largely remained Sub-Zero C
at Mountain elevations, but when exposed to the intensity of
direct solar energy, softening of top layer surfaces is generating
classic spring mogul formations that are very popular with the
traditional Spring Skiing Fans.

At the end of the day...

There is a big priority to get the Groomers out
right after Last Run. The overnight sub-zero C’s
are enough to re-solidify the surfaces, so crews
make a huge effort to get it all smooth before
Mother Nature locks it all in with the evening
temp. drops.

So far, there seems to be a “Wicking” type of action
going on within the substrates of the groomed terrain,
so where you might think it was going to be a more
solid sheet-like consistency after a Sub-Zero C overnight,
it’s actually been more of a granular top layer that’s had
great performance from First Tracks to Last Run.

These characteristics are probably related to what might
be called the “Saturation” point of thaw, so they could, and
most likely change as the real spring heat gets applied
for longer hours. In the mean-time, all we’ve had has
been quite fast and very easy to maintain control inputs on
due to retained frost in the base that has kept the softness
restricted to fairly shallow depths.

Weather Notes:

There are reasonable chances that the Mountain may
have less wet or damp influences than the surrounding
low laying base levels. We see this lesser effect frequently
when the precipitation icons are small, as this typically
indicates light precip., and passing in bands of active
periods that can be of short duration.

Conditions Notes:

The overall conditions are excellent.

We have not written a word in weeks about “Hazards”,
mostly because there aren’t any that are systemic or
significant. For the most part, there’s not so much as
a single snowflake out of place, and other than the very
occasional twig or tree bark, the trails are amazingly
Snow-White, and coverages are nearly flawless.

When You See Nord, North Trail #65, Banzai Haut, Upper,
like this, with side harvested snow, groomed flat, level,
with a fresh layer of new snow, on April 11th, you KNOW
the entire Mountain is in extraordinary shape.

Otherwise....

Firmer at the Summit, Softer at Base Levels...
and everything in between.

“50 Shades Of Winter”, it’s not the name of a
new risqué Ski Movie, it is the firmness in the
base that you encounter in passing, it is the
residual snow still in the trees that tells you
even though the sun feels warm, the air itself
has not quite reached into the “+” side for
most of the Mountains elevations... yet.
That could change today...

Maybe it will be a damp day, maybe not,
but the technical reference to the Skiing
should be classic Spring soft snow surfaces.

We think there is some probability it could
remain dry most, if not all day.

page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
