T360 Apres Midnight Apres Ski Edit, under progressive assembly @ 1:13 A.M.

We have No Idea How Tomorrow Is Going To Shape Up.

There are just way too many Wild Cards. It’s definitely
raining @ 1:15 A.M. at the Sud, South Resort Base Level,
but at “Last Run”, it was snowing like crazy at the Summit,
and all the way to the Nord, North Side base where we were parked.

The Web Cam at the summit is currently obscured by some
sort of frozen mix, the Sud, South base Web Cam shows that
Mountain Crews did remove the Gondola Cable cars, so evidently,
there is sufficient Freezing rain potential to warrant that action.
We write about that below in the Orig. Post, so that’s one indication
there may be a significant initial trail reduction for tomorrow morning.

In the mean-time, we were wrong about some of our soft performance
expectations because the way the weather broke today was not as forecast.
To begin with, it was not really sunny at any point, it was overcast all day,
and... the temps never made it to the High Temp forecast that we know
of, so the net effect was far less negative than it could have been.
There was a lot more firmness in the top layers, although there were many
fairly heavily mogul’d zones, some of which were carry-over’s from Saturday.

Todays surfaces were surprisingly quick, which was a stark
contrast after yesterday’s rather warm generated sticky.
There was enough speed you could use the shallow moguls
in many areas as “poppers”, to launch yourself for turns
in the air... Zing!!! You’re Gone... !!!

There were still many legitimate zones of “Excellence”,
however the weather has meant that they are now
on a more select basis, where they exist individually,
as a result of being sheltered, and/or getting
unusually deep snow-pack drifted in.

Overall, today was surprisingly good, another
example of way different than the forecast would
suggest. The main performance asset was the
restoration of speed due to generally cooler
elevation temps that also had an overcast umbrella
to keep the intensity of direct sun from really
cooking up the softness.

It’s definitely a “Wait And See” thing for tomorrow.

Way too many variables to predict with any accuracy.

A Spring Speed And Utility Trick...

When The Weather Gets Warm...

If The Snow Goes Slow...

Follow The Shadows...

Anyone who’s spent time trying to figure out how to keep
the speed when Spring conditions get really soft, ultimately
realizes that frequently, the best performance can often be
found in the shadows or zones where the suns energy is
dissipated by oblique angle. We’re at that point now.

Of Course #1... We get a break every morning while the
sun takes its time to build thermal rise over the Zero C
mark, but eventually the shadow trick lets us either
keep that cool performance, or at least extend it.

Of Course #2... For those Spring Soft Mogul Bump Fans...
that weird and wonderful group of Mashed Potato Enthusiasts...

They are in their Glory!

(sorry for the Ski-pole in this one, but it was a spontaneous
in the moment quick snapshot to capture a skier in motion
to show relative scale, as well as the long shadows that
have helped to keep this trail in such excellent conditions
even with the heat.)

If you are sitting somewhere regionally at “Yourville”,
watching the grass get green and the Robins are flying
around, you may be wondering “Is there enough Snow
to go Skiing?”

It’s an all-time record for total season to date snowfall,
so deep Snow is no problem.(**)

Weather Notes:

Later on...

“Wild Cards”...

We say that with specific reference to the potential that at these
temp’s, and at cooler Mountain elevations, there is at least the
possibility this could be snow over the Mountain for either a
portion, or the entire time.

We will all get a better insight into how Mountain Op’s
considers the Freezing Rain scenario if they dismount
the Gondola Cars from the main cable tonight.

Water weighs 10 pounds per gallon, so you can imagine
the tons of load frozen rain represents if it coats everything,
not to mention the physical space it can jam up mechanisms
with, so if there is a perceived serious threat, it’s an efficient,
practical, and very simple, easy alternative to just put the cars
inside, and out of the weather to avoid the hassle altogether.

Spring Weather can be some of the most challenging logistically
complicated of the whole season, but Tremblant’s experienced
Crews have developed proactive strategies, of which the car
removal prior to a forecasted event, is most obvious.

Conditions Notes:

“Live For The Day”...

The “Sweet Spot” should be from around 10:00 A.M. to about 2:00 P.M.,
after which you’ll either be rejoicing in the “Soft”, or chasing the shadows
to keep some speed, but either way, it’s Sunny and Warm, and that makes
it a classic Tremblant super scenic spring day of discovery!

It seems completely bizarre to not be writing about natural
hazards like rocks or stumps or whatever the melting snow
usually begins to reveal typically by this time, but they
just don’t exist in any usual way. For sure, there are some
starting to show in places like crests where they can be
all season anyway, but for the vast majority, the coverage
is absolutely wall-to-wall, top-to-bottom, with not hardly
a soft spring snowflake out of place. There are zones where
there’s still so much snow, the trees in the bush look shorter
than normal. Our Proof of Snow above is one of them.

(**)Ultimately the question is not going to be how much snow there is,
it’s going to be how useful is it after days of up to +14C and the
forecast April showers. Regardless of depth, super-saturated snow
loses mobility utility rapidly.

Go while you can.

It’s a long time ’til next November
and even then, there won’t be this much
snow to play with, so best get out now
and try to get your fill of Ski/Board fun
while you can...
