T360 Early Evening Apres Ski Edit @ 6:11 P.M.

They Make Movies About “Singing’ In The Rain”!!!(*)

((*)Gene Kelly the Movie Star Dancer was a Skier with
a very competitive attitude and it was on a Ski Trip to
Switzerland in 1958 that he suffered a knee injury that
ended his serious dancing career. At the time of the accident,
he was racing actual Olympic Skiers he knew in an attempt
to beat them to the bottom of the mountain!)

Basically, the Skiing is very good, but it’s raining.

Reminder: It’s April 19...

If you are prepared for the atmospheric part, there is
very good technical merit in the surfaces.

The challenge, and the difficulty, is being able to separate
the two things and focus on the skiing. To do that, you need
the Poncho we refer to for rainy days, as well as some adaptive
eye ware we also refer to for rainy days.

Additionally, you may/probably want to shorten your day as
even though the adaptations can help to keep you dry, they
can not always prevent the eventual migration of water into
your inner garment layers due to forward velocity while
encountering airborne water. The common sense thing may
be to call it a day if you’re not comfortable.

It currently looks like a repeat for tomorrow, however it
is not uncommon for Mother Nature to change her mind
without telling the humans, so we are going to monitor
the physical situation on the ground here as well as the
forecast to see if there are any potentials for an improved
outlook.

------------- Midnight Forcasting Update -----------------

There is a substantial probability that most, if not all
of tomorrow could be dry over the Mountain footprint,
however, despite the positive potential indicated above,
the fact remains there is still some smaller probability
it could rain more that the forecast suggests.

Bottom line: If you’re planning to go skiing tomorrow,
you’ll need to have gear options ready to adapt for rainy
conditions if they occur at sustained intensity.

As unlikely as the forecast would suggest...

Can Mother Nature Surprise Us With Another Dry Day?

Despite Weather Warnings for flood level rain yesterday,
other than about 5 minutes of early morning sprinkles,
not a single drop of rain fell anywhere on the Mountain
that we saw or felt during Open hours. What rain did come,
did not start until about 4:35 P.M.

Repeat: Can Mother Nature Surprise Us With Another Dry Day?

So far, the answer for today is “Not Quite”, as there is a very
light drizzle with occasional light rain periods in the Old Village
of Mt. Tremblant, adjacent to the Versant Sud, South Side Resort Base.

The operative words in all that are “Light” and “Occasional”.

This is a typical active precipitation profile for what looks to be
a day of on/off passing bands of weather under a very low cloud
cover ceiling. If we’re right on that, the tendency is for precipitation
to fall under the cloud, not so much in the cloud. If this common
pattern ends up being constant for the day, then there should be
periods of dryness, and it’s possible there may even be sectors that
remain either very lightly damp, or dry all day?

There is some probability we could be totally wrong with any
optimistic hopes for dryness or other weather and Skiing
performance characteristics over the Mountain. Unfortunately
for Skiers, this is the kind of April Showers spring weather that
starts to turn Golf Fairways green.

Below:
Yesterday saw some of the very first signs of spring
that we might normally have expected 3 weeks ago
or more. Kandahar has 2 bare patches of exposed
rocky ground over it’s summit crests, however
the “Next Door Neighbour”, Taschereau, still enjoyed
100% coverage due to the fact that it has a less
pronounced initial pitch angle, and an “S” shaped
upper entrance. Lesser pitch means more even
base depths, and the “S” shape within the tree’d
borders seems to buffer the intensity of the wind
action.

Setting aside the atmospheric conditions, we think the
Skiing could be "quite good" to "very fine" within the realm
of “Spring” standards, but we do not yet have the feedback
at this early hour to support that conclusively.

The amazing part as far as we are concerned is that up until
yesterday we have not seen any thaw-induced stress to the
excellent durability of the exceptional wall-to-wall coverage.
Normally, in the sense of 20 plus year averages, we’d see
the development of thin and/or bare patches about the
third week of March, but yesterday was the first time we
could say there was that kind of visible sign of spring this season.

On that basis, it might be fair to say that the 615cm’s record
of seasonal snowfall accumulations has gotten us between
3 to 4 weeks of extra 100% Winter coverages this season,
and we are most thankfully appreciative for every single moment.

Weather Notes:

Many, many Wild Cards for today, consequently
too difficult to call, and with the Weather Warning
attached below, we have to accept the possibility
it could be very, very wet out there.

Conditions Notes:

The very deep frost into the Mountains conical mass has
performed very effectively through all the Spring thermal
influences of wet and warm weather up to within the last
30 hours or so. Even then, the small amount of thaw-exposed
ground has only been evident on some of the normal crests that
are directly wind facing, primarily on the Versant Sud, South Side
Summit sectors. There is a loss of trail-side bush snowpack
evident on lower Sud, South, portions, however, so far that
has not meant anything to trail utility that is still benefitting
from the whole seasons worth of grooming compaction.

That may seem like a more dramatic change today after last
nights Apres Ski rainy period that lasted at fairly significant
volume for a couple of hours.

The bottom line is that we’ve enjoyed a historic level
of quality right through to this moment, and it is only
now that we may have to begin to be cautious about
hazards showing through. So, it’s very important to pay
close attention to any Ski Patrol hand-posted signage,
as well as using reduced speed for line-of-sight navigation
that can require sudden course or speed changes to avoid
glitches before you go ripping around. Look for patterns
in surface conditions and act proactively to ensure safety.

page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
