A Social Experiment, Tremblant Ski Style.

A Social Experiment, Tremblant Ski/Board Style.

There are many common historical references to social behaviour
patterns documenting the Human tendency for individuals
to display personal skills within a setting of an audience.

From “Soapbox” orators to Terrain Park jumpers, if you give
people a place to “Show” or “Tell”, sooner or later, individuals
will recognize the the opportunity to display or present themselves.

So it was that we found ourselves on Tremblant’s Closing Day,
April 22, 2018, standing on lower Versant Nord “Fuddle Duddle”
about 300 metres up from the bottom of the trail. This section
of the run has 4 distinct rolling pitches that are quite short and
form a figurative “Ladder” or series of steps to the runout to
the Expo Quad Chairlift.

We often refer to this zone as some of the finest groomed
carving descent geography on planet Earth because it is normally
groomed super-smooth, and with a 13 meter turning radius Slalom Ski,
the “Steps” are almost perfectly placed to experience weightlessness in
every turn as you crest the rolling contours. For Experts, this means
super-fun airborne turns over the stepped sequence, for Intermediates
at lower speeds, it means a natural “Unweighting” effect to help initiate
turns over the stepped sequence.

In this particular case, with a +10 C Super Warm, Super Sunny Spring
Skiing day, the heat induced softness was very quickly converted by
passing traffic into Moguls.

The Unintended Consequence.

The initial purpose of our stop here was to observe and document
mogul formations we’d seen on a prior run, but after two minutes
here this time with our camera out, the real benefit of this stop
became apparent as an “Unintended Consequence”. Segway to this
topic’s opening concept...

In the broadest sense of the concept...
“If you build it, they will come.”
or in this instance...
If you give ‘em a place to “Display”... they will come!

We did not set any thing up. We did not pre-arrange any participants,
we did not coach, solicit, ask, encourage, seek out or otherwise
encourage anyone to exhibit and we do not know a single soul
that spontaneously blessed us with the jumps you’ll see below.
We simply found ourselves standing about 7 or 8 metres above
what turned out to be an excellent mogul lip that the folks pictured
here chose to use to “Exhibit” for our camera.

The “Social Experiment” began after we were there for two minutes
and it became obvious the spontaneous willingness of passing individuals
to exhibit that we were witnessing, was far more interesting than the
original purpose.

Above: Some jumpers were lower, but as was the case with the person above,
very fast. You can see the speed here as well as the high degree of skill needed
to navigate these bumps quickly demonstrated in the compact, well angulated
stance.

The main reason we think this exhibition was only because we were
there, was that it was obvious from the up-hill approach to our position
that we were standing there with camera raised and focused over this jump
and on a prior run, stopping here trail-side without the camera out,
we had seen no such conduct.

Two minutes turned into 15. It was fascinating to see this
reaction and we became so engrossed in trying to capture
the action, we began to notice repeat jumpers making a second
pass in front of the lens.

Due to the fact that our eyes and camera were focused facing downhill, it was
impossible to anticipate arrivals, so the best we could do was to pre-focus on a
spot roughly just below the lip where we anticipated jumpers might be mid-air,
then be ready to snap pic’s as exhibitors passed through the frame. We were
not able to do that successfully in every case and we missed some jumpers,
or pre-focusing was not always effective. We estimate our success rate was at
about 60%.

The points here are:
1)... that if you give folks a place
to “Show Off”, they will grab the
chance, literally in a passing heartbeat,
2)... There may be some chance that
individual exhibitors may find this record
and would be interested to see the results?
