Conditions 12/27/08

Post by T360 »

Mother Nature has a "Hic-Up" in her temperature.

It will be winter for most of the day to day, but
things are going to get decidedly "Damp" later on.

Currently, we have all lifts open and a trail count of 76,
but that could change by the hour, so check back often
for up-dates.

-------------------------------------------

10:30 am Up-Date: Much of North side on "progressive" opening.
Lifts my be closed and opened as weather conditions allow.

Check with On-Hill Info Personel in Yellow Jackets with big "?" on back.

-----------------------------------------------------

The wind will be from the south, so it will be coming up the
Soleil Side and it could be "Brisk" or "Gusty", so get ready for that.

At around 12:00 Noon, we will break into the Plus side of the
temp scale and the forecasters say we will have rain.

The realities of conditions around and within the expansive radius,
or as the current vernacular calls it, the "Footprint" of Tremblant,
may be quite different for a couple or more reasons as follows:

Firstly, the forecast spec's are for ground level and typically, the
summit is between 4 to 7 degrees colder, so up top, we may have
winter all day, if we're lucky.

I had a good conversation with a knowledgeable weather person
while riding up the Duncan Chair the last time this happened,
which was just 13 days ago on Dec., 13th, 08 and he explained
that when all else is equal, the difference in temp between the
top and bottom can be calculated by a degree drop per 1000 ft
of vertical rise, which should mean that the summit should only
be about 3 degrees cooler than the base.

Why then, does Tremblant often have a 5 or more cooler degree
spread between Top and Bottom?

The answer seems to lie in the STRATIFICATION of wind layers
which can frequently occur when dominant, cold arctic air masses
collide with warm air masses.

Anyway, for the sake of our snow surface, lets hope there are some
swirling cold air masses around that might help keep things "Cool".

Secondly, there is frequently a difference in the type of precipitation
that occurs between the sides of Tremblant.

Once again as an example, the last time this happened, Dec. 13th,
just a couple of weeks ago, people were freaking out about rain,
which it was doing at the time (around 2:00pm) on the South Side,
but over on the North, on the bottom of La Griffe, it was snowing.

SUMMARY:

1) YOU CAN HAVE A GREAT DAY IN ANY WEATHER AT TREMBLANT
IF YOU ARE PREPARED.

2) You can ALWAYS find good skiing somewhere at Tremblant on
days like this because this Mountain has enough in different micro-climates
that can be found, and one or more of them will have excellent conditions.

Explore, and you will find them.

You will find a complete article on these conditions in the “equipment"
section of Tremblantchat.com , so take a look, get properly geared
up and HAVE FUN ANYWAY!
