1/22/14 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Apres Ski, Late Evening Edit…. @ 11:45 P.M.

75 Years Of Traditionally Excellent Alpine Snow Sports.

Today was the kind of day that underscores the reasons
Tremblant has been such a dominant Player in the
Eastern North American Ski Resort Industry for so many
decades.

The temps did indeed climb upward and there were even times when
you could feel “Heat” on your back from Solar energy. For a while,
we were quite comfortable !!! Funny how -18 C feels warm and mild after
a couple of days with -27 to -32 C in them.

Below:
When we arrive at the Summit we tend to be distracted by the Big Sky’s,
but of course, it’s the Snow we practice our skills on. You can see how
fine the tracking is through this very fine particle size snow.

All the way down to either base, your descent is rewarded with
outstanding traction and performance on Snow that looks the same
as this for the entire distance.

The Icing on the Cake, so-to-speak, is the spectacular scenery
you are surrounded by while you Ski or Board the immaculate
surfaces.

The Traction on Tremblant’s surfaces of today allowed us
to approach Lateral Loading reaching toward 1 G. Absolutely
some of the finest carving of the Season. Virtually flawless
on the Open Groomed Terrain.

We get the feeling just by observing the level of completion,
that most of the Snowmaking surfaces may be back Open for
the Weekend.

We could be wrong, but they have started to spread them
already, so we’ll see if there are any advances in the Morning.

It’s getting warmer too!!!

(**)this pic is actually 36 hours old, but still applicable for today.
Typical of Stable Arctic Air Masses, when they really settle in, they
hang around for a few.

“The Bold, The Brave, And The Few.”

No, it’s not a new Clint Eastwood movie… although it sounds like
a good title for one… but today, at -33 C bright and early, it’s a
very good description of the people that are at the Summit for
"First Tracks”.

Consider the “Elevation Differential” that is typically 3 to 5 degrees C
cooler than base levels. By logical deduction that makes the Summit
somewhere around -37, -38 C… at that dear readers is the territory of….

The Bold, The Brave, And The Few….

...not to mention the very well dressed.

To be fair to the day, it is supposed to warm up to a much warmer
-18 C by after lunch, so the afternoon will have a very different feel
than it does right now.

Moving on...

Going from “Point A”, above to “Point B” below…

Riding up the Gondola yesterday was a unique experience that started out
with this as you came to the final crest to the Summit:

It almost looked like some sort of Snow Tsunami rolling towards you,
but of course it’s stationary and your moving towards it which created
the neat perception effect.

Below: Once you get closer, the rapid rate of snowmaking
becomes very clear as billowing clouds of very highly pressurized
water particles instantly become Snow in these super cool temps.

We’re now on the “Final Approach” to the Summit but it looks
like we’re headed for some new, other World. Very Impressive
and Very Very Etherial.

Why are they Snowmaking now? … we’ve been asked that a few times
over the last two days. We do not have an Official answer, but what we
can tell you is….

A) Every single Snow Crystal helps the reserve for Durability
and Surface Quality for the projected Season to April 22nd.
The recent “January Thaw”, which seems like an eternity ago
already, none-the-less, did deplete the base to a degree, so
restoring that uniform depth necessary to go the seasons distance
is a wise thing.

B) It is our understanding, subject to corrections, Low temps help
facilitate efficient production and the quality of Blown Snow at low
temp production is superior.

C) Personally, we think it’s interesting to note that all the Snowmaking
is on the South. We are just guessing, but we think that is a reflection
of the fact that with the temps of the Thaw so close to freezing on the South,
much of the North stayed Sub-Zero and it had far less effect over there.
Time will tell if Snowmaking comes back North, but we can tell ya fer a fact…
the North just does not need as much help with all the recent Natural Snowfall
that’s ended up there.

WHAT YOU END UP WITH…

Major Inventories of Excellent Blown Snow…

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
