1/26/18 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Apres Ski Edit, Under Construct @ 10:55 P.M.

BIG, BIG, BIG, HUGE, Overnight Conditions Upgrade!

Wow, very well executed Grooming last night produced
a remarkable improvement in many sectors that had All-Day
durability today.

Today was a primo example of a Mountain-Wide Overnight
refinement that gave us a simply beautiful day on the Sunny
Slopes of Tremblant. Mountain Crews pulled some Magic out
of their Kit and the results were substantially deeper Top
Layers over virtually all the Groomed Terrain. Most of the
Icy bits... GONE.

We want to highlight TWO Versant Nord, North Side
Case Study Trails, firstly #79, Sissy Schuss, Haut, Upper,
and secondly, Trail #82, Expo Haut, Upper.

The recent Thermal Event, caused a Glacial-Like
flow of Surface Ice for a patch of the Right Side
descent of Sissy Schuss between the Upper and
Lower Accesses to Gagnon. We’ll call this one from
Jan. 23, 2018, “Before”.

The Ski Patrol has had it well Marked for the last
several days, but today, it was as if it never existed!
We’ll call this one below, “After”.

What we think happened:

The Jan. 23 warm unavoidably created the initial flow, but the
super-cool, all snow base underneath prevented it from penetrating
beyond the surface, so as soon as the temps dropped, it seems to
have been very easily assimilated back into snow with a concentrated
grooming effort. A quite remarkable and quick return to full utility.

The Second example is Versant Nord, North Side “Expo”, Haut, Upper.
The “Before” Picture is in the body of the Orig. Post, below, so we’re
going to post the “After” shot down the page with the “Before". Please Scroll
Down for that.

Of course the Big Point is the recognition and appreciation for
an extraordinary effort by Mountain Crews for such a Fantastic Job!

With Temps rising further tomorrow to just above Zero C,
it should be a Fantastic, Super Soft Shred-Carve day of
Alpine Snow Sports Fun!

We think that with Sud, South, Resort Base Level temps getting
up to +4C, there is at least some possibility of any precipitation
being Snow at cooler Mountain and/or Winds Aloft Elevations.
In any event, top surfaces should be quite soft by Noon or so,
and considering the cool of the last 3 days, we also think it
should remain Fast all day with lingering frost in the substrates
below.

The views have been so spectacular for the last two days
that at any safe, Trail-Side stopping point you simply forget
the “Cool” factor as you take in the panoramic beauty before you.

The Skiing is so good that it deserves...

A Philosophical/Editorial Expression Of Appreciation
For the Moment...

There are very few moments that you will feel so “Alive” as you
do when you are successfully mastering all the dimensions of
Winter within Tremblant’s majestic Pre-Cambrian domain.

It’s almost mind-boggling to even try to imagine you are surrounded
by what is arguably the oldest rock on the face of Planet Earth,
over 4 Billion Years of Geological History that Mother Nature
has shaped day-by-day into this Magnificent setting where Winter
Alpine Snow Sports enjoy such wondrous suitability.

Conditions over the last 4 days have gone from a very short
“+”C Thermal exposure to a quick re-freeze that have generated
complex surfaces with highly variable degrees of Grip and
Performance. That variability is largely dependant on available
soft top layers, and may be proportional to steepness.

No doubt, the best retained Loose, Snowy surfaces are on
slopes with “Green” and “Blue” more gentle descents,
while a lot of the steeper “Black”, Expert descents have shown
more icy tendencies. This is not to say that all steep runs are icy.
Even where icy is, or can develop with traversing traffic, there
are typically very Skiable, soft descent lines on trail sides.

Those guests who want to “Carve” turns, regardless of personal
Skill Levels, have been defaulting to the more gentle inclines
and within those areas, have been ripping up the turns, albeit
with a delicate touch so grip can be retained. Looking back up
at the Pic. above, it’s not hard to see that even with the wide
mix in particle size, lateral grip is still very easily attainable
where the loose top layers allow.

A big part of the Complexity came from the Freezing Rain
falling over 10cm’s of Fresh Snowfall.

Where The Snow Went(one example):

Two days ago we wrote that the Snowfall had favoured the Nord, North
sectors, particularly the lower portions, and we’re using this 48 hour old
pic. to illustrate that and to show just what’s going to be in the Re-Opened
and Listed “Groomed” Trail #82, “Expo” for today.

Otherwise, we are still recommending close matching of your
actual Skill Level to rated Terrain because of the additional
challenge created by the “Re-Froze” portion of this last thermal
cycle that is responsible for steeper pitches remaining with icy
tendencies. This is not the time for so-called “Experts" to be dragging
their Intermediate or Beginner Friends onto Kandahar or any other
example of Steep Open Terrain. You may think that goes without
saying, but stand on the entrance there for 5 minutes and chances
are, you’ll see exactly what we mean. Real “Experts” promote
responsible safety for all lesser Skill Levels.

Weather Notes:

It actually dipped down to -28C just before Sunrise, but it
should climb at a relatively quick rate up to the forecasted
high of -7C by mid-afternoon, so with a 21C Rise over
about 6 hours, the day will feel dramatically different
in short order.

The other and Very Big, as a matter of fact...

Our Favourite Weather Factor...

Low, and compared to some of the recent days, really, really low,
Wind Speed. We can take a lot of “Cold”, but what makes it
uncomfortable is Wind Speed. In the comparatively Low Wind
of today, even this mornings “Cool” is not going to seem so bad
at all. By this afternoon, it’s going to make the day feel like an
afternoon at the Beach.

More later at Apres Ski....

but until then... Generally applicable rule of thumb,
conditions always seem to improve when temps on way up...
