11/29/18 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Midnight Apres Ski Edit @ 11:55 P.M.

Welcome To Winter.

A handful of degrees cooler than forecast, looks like winter...
feels like winter too, but in every good way you can attach “Winter” to “Skiing”.

Superb traction and control across all skill levels of Open terrain...
not to mention, spectacularly beautiful.

The Weather Forecast Was “Sunny”???

Not even close... It was All-Day-Grey...

And...

Very solid evidence there is more Opening Terrain
in the near-term future, especially when you consider
the Nansen Bas, Lower pic. in the orig. post below as
“Before”, here in todays Apres Ski we already have
Nansen Bas, Lower “After”, showing finished grade
Corduroy Grooming:

We do not have any Official Opening date for Nansen Bas, Lower,
however we feel moderately confident it will be between tomorrow
and any day up to a week from tomorrow, due to it’s importance
for public traffic flow while the 24hr. Children’s Charity Fundraiser
Event is on. Most newly opening trails respond extremely well to
“Break-In” utilization by the public, so we could well understand if
Tremblant wanted to get some public use on Nansen Bas to smooth
out any rough edges.

As far as tomorrow is concerned, we think that due to the
coolness at elevations today, surfaces should remain fairly
stable in the dropping temps of tonight. Things never got
really soft today, so there’s nothing to freeze up, so-to-speak.
If anything, tomorrow may see some of that “Sunshine”
we expected today, but never saw. It’s quite likely that the
Sun may generate some softness in top layers and it would
be our opinion that in that case, it will mean some fabulous
high performance carving for Experts, and super easy learning
for Beginners.

See you on the slopes?

20(*) Open Trails on Versant Sud, South, and Versant Nord, North, Sides at #Tremblant.
Please Note: Summit-To-Base Ski-outs on both Sectors.

9:56 A.M. Update: 19(*) Open Trails
Adjustment. #70, Gagnon removed.

We are including this adjustment because
we discussed Gagnon and the Sectors it
relates to in the body of todays reporting.

Do you remember the bright yellow ball in the sky called the “Sun”?
It’s been a while since we’ve seen it, but they say its actually going
to be “Sunny” for the first time since Opening Day, exactly one week ago!

So, despite the rather “grey” ambiance
of the last weeks (thankfully)Snowy Overcast...

One consistent element of all the days since Opening 11/22/18 has been...

The natural “Speed” in the surfaces.

Tremblant has been great fun, and fast technical Skiing since
Seasons First Tracks. These desirable attributes have been
enhanced by the Summit-To-Base Ski-outs on both Sud, South
and Nord, North for only the 3rd time in Tremblant history that
we know of. So, the summary for the first week can only be
“Extraordinary” in both performance and access.

We see an expansion of the Open Trail Count this morning to 20(*)
however the one trail added this morning is Versant Nord, North,
#70 “Gagnon” which is a bit unusual because there is not currently
an Open way to get to it? Gagnon is the run that descends from the
peak of the Expo Quad, down to the Base of the Lowell Thomas Quad.
Technically, it is what we would call a “Connector” run that facilitates
entry and exit points to other primary decent trails. In the case of
Gagnon, these trail connections include Sissy Schuss, from the side,
Lowell Thomas Bas, Lower, from the other side, and Beauchemin, at the
bottom. More importantly though, is the interconnectivity that Gagnon
offers from the entire upper portion of the whole Lowell Thomas Sector
as well as the access to the entire array of trails below the Expo peak
on the Beauchemin side, including the Le Tendre entrance to the Edge Sector.

Below:

This Lowell Thomas Quad view is 48hrs old. There is more snowfall
since then. It is looking downward at about the half-way mark, and
the trail that goes off to screen-right is #67 Lowell Thomas, Bas, Lower,
on its way to its exit to mid-point Gagnon. This POV is all natural snowfall,
there is no snowmaking here what-so-ever.

The vast expanse of connections Gagnon supports(including
the Expo Quad Lift which we’ve seen testing within the last
day or so), makes its Opening a very significant step in annual
Trail development, so we will attempt to clarify its status as Open
due to the importance of all the other expansion its opening would
normally be associated with. There certainly has been a big
snowmaking effort on Sissy Schuss and Fuddle-Duddle, so
there may be an insight regarding those openings. The upper
portions of the Lowell Thomas Trail itself have had snow guns
placed in line too, so all the evidence points to trails above
and below Gagnon being activated in the near-future.

It was reported to us that the Soleil Sector Quad Lift was
observed test running. That is interesting and we may have
to take a drive around to the Casino/Soleil Quad Base to
see how much natural snow or snowmaking is evident there.

Below: The rough-cut grooming of Nansen Bas, Lower, is
a very welcome sign of preparation activity that we want
to follow up on. Having Nansen Bas, Lower available is
the single largest enhancement possible to Versant Sud,
the South Side, so we’ll try to get more info on that.

Weather Notes:

Sunny? So far it’s way grey, and not even a hint of brightness.
Of course things can change very rapidly, and that is what
would have to happen for this forecast to be accurate starting
out. At least its a very user friendly mild, so comfort will be
easy.

Conditions Notes:

Today is 2 degrees cooler than yesterday, so the fact that any
surface softness did not extend above the Versant Sud, South
Resort Base trail Johannsen yesterday might indicate that the
Mountain will continue to have all “Winter” performance exactly
the same way today.

More Wild-Cards...

With temps so very close to Zero C, the amount of, or lack of,
sunshine, could definitely alter surface characteristics where
direct solar exposure had a chance to work, as opposed to being
shaded all day.

Warmer snow frequently has a bit of drag, but yesterday
was all “Speed” and we are hoping that will remain the
same today. The 2 degrees cooler is the best possible
assurance of that possibility, but we’ll just have to ski it
to know for sure.

It’s fair to point out that all Ski and Snowboard performance
can be optimized for surface temps by waxing ski/board bases
for the temp. range you will be on, so if possible, wax or coat
bases for best results.

There has been remarkably little ice in the mix, once again
considering the recent closeness to Zero C, but that’s a great
big bonus due in large part to the fairly steady natural snowfall.
Mountain Crews have done a very good job of integrating each
round of new snowfall into the trail base on a daily basis, so we
are enjoying high levels of compaction. Top layers are very responsive
to control inputs and also have very high lateral grip which has
enabled reliable carving performance for all skill levels.

Know The Code!

Skiing and Snowboarding are sports that involve risk.
Those risks can be substantially reduced by adhering
to the Ski/Board Code Of Mountain Conduct.
The Ski Patrol does not want to have you as an accident
statistic, so use care with Speed and Control at all times.

Practice Makes Perfect!

The Ski Patrol does simulation training so everyone on the
team is fully certified to be competent when those accidents
do happen. This shot below is a training exercise on lower
P’tit Bonheur from yesterday.
