1/28/19 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Late Eve. Apres Ski Edit Progressively Under Assembly @ 11:21 P.M.

We feel totally vindicated in our forecast that today
would be easier, more user friendly than yesterday.
Even though the absolute temps were lower today,
there was almost no wind, so this view below was
completely calm. Standing here, we had hand out
of glove to work camera for about 2.5 minutes with
almost no discomfort at around -23 C!.

In the absence of motion, the solar energy could be felt in seconds.
As soon as you had any forward/descent movement, your ground
speed was the immediate equivalent in air speed wind chill, so attention
to detail in outer layer garment seals, overlaps and complete coverage
was essential for prolonged motion. If you were in the sun, as soon as
you stopped, the wind chill disappeared.

If you were not in the sun when you stopped, that probably
meant you were somewhere on the North where the sun is
still low enough in the sky at the end of January to throw a
lot of long shadows. That had nothing to do with the North Side
performance though, the snow surfaces here are just as quick
as anywhere, and the traction is immaculate and ice-free.

The Speed, Traction, Grip, And Consistency Of Surface Performance
Covered Every Square Inch Of Groomed Terrain From Summit-To-Base.

What stood out as a bit of a surprise was the speed. It was almost
as if you were getting a push from an invisible magic hand? Something
in the mix was generating super quick surfaces and they were fun!

Above and Below are both of the same slope, Trail # 29 Versant Sud,
South Side, Johannsen, at the Resort Base.

The above is the “Big Picture”, and below is the zoomed in detail that
very clearly shows the real, actual, levels of performance we had all day
and across virtually all the open, groomed, terrain.

You Could Do This All Day
Over All The Groomed Terrain
At Tremblant!

Thank Goodness It’s A Ski Resort!

While most of North America suffers record cold that
is forecast to be even cooler than the previous record
Winter of 2014 “Polar Vortex” , at least those of us here
at this Ski Resort are equipped mentally and physically
to handle the cold. On top of that, if you study the 2 week
long range below, it’s not really all that bad?(**)

Weather Notes:

Part “A”:
What we like the very best, so-far, for today is the...
Low Wind Speed. We can take the cold way, way easier
when there’s no/low wind.

If you find a safe, calm, sunny, trail-side place to stop
today, you’ll be able to feel solar energy almost immediately.
You’ll still need to bundle up of course, and as soon as you
start to move, you’ll have effective air speed that will act
as wind-chill, but in the absence of the “Howler” we experienced
periodically yesterday, even a few degrees C cooler today should
feel relatively comfortable.

(**)What is interesting to us is that if you look at the two week
long range forecast, while the Continental News Media is
freaking out over the weather that’s supposed to be coming,
the daily temp. values forecast for Tremblant look fairly easy
for the most part, and certainly no worse than what we have
already seen?

Thank Goodness It’s A Ski Resort!

Conditions Notes:

318 cm’s/10.4 Feet, Of Primo, Squeaky Cool, Light, Dry, Fast, Natural Snow!

Where it’s groomed, it’s Fabulous. Period. Excellent. Period.

Where it’s Un-Groomed, Sous Bois, Hors Piste, Glades, etc.,
scroll back up to the top pic. in this Original Post, because
that’s exactly what you’re working with. Excellent and Fabulous!!!

When you look at the lower right corner of this frame
below, what you are seeing is what can be referred to as
the “Shred” characteristics of this trail surface that was
groomed a couple of days ago and now has an accumulating
new layer on top. This stuff carves like soft butter. It is
low friction and high traction, not only on this “Expert”
rated Versant Nord, North Side trail #66 “Le Tunnel”,
that we have been featuring, but on every groomed trail,
and on every skill level from the Green’s right on up to
this “Black”.

The interesting thing to note between the picture above
and the picture at the top of this dated Original Post, is that
they are less than 10 metres from one another. We think
that’s a very desirable level of diversity in the Open Tremblant
terrain right now. There’s an almost incredible level of “User
Friendly” in every category of Open Terrain.
