2/7/19 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Late Eve. Apres Ski Edit Under Progressive Assembly @ 11:21 P.M.

We had an “Good Experience” with some "Mountain-Krazy” KLM/AMS
Crew, up to Tremblant from YUL for a day of fresh air...

More to follow as time permits, however we have a whole
series of KLM Tremblant Alpine Action Shots that we’ll have
in after a few hours of processing time, which could be a day
to two for the whole bunch, but here’s a “quick" sample coming right up...

It Looks Fast Because It Is Fast.

This group are genuinely enthusiastic and set a fast pace
down Fuddle-Duddle Bas, lower, then another rocket-run
down Nansen, and just missed “Last Run” by a couple min’s...
No Problem, We’ll catch it next time!

Att: KLM/AMS Ski Tremblant Crew: Send P.M. @ Tremblant360 on
FB/Twit or Tremblant360 Gmail or Full-Size JPG pic.files for
this Chrono/Date: 2.7.19

Bravo KLM/AMS Crew! This is what real friends can do for a day
with the right number of hours on a YUL layover...

“Take Off For Tremblant, And Make It Count!"

Be Sure To File Your Return To Tremblant Flight Plan ASAP!

Otherwise, it was an excellent day with so much traction,
you could stand sideways on your good, sharp, SL Full-Camber
Carving Rockets.

2.6.19 Last Run. At the end of the day, snow falling over the
entire Mountain gave a nicely functional cushion over the base,
and we expect that with the All-Nighter Grooming shift, the
net result today should be a very positively noticeable increase
in the depth of soft top layers.

It started snowing over all of Tremblant at about 1:00 P.M. and kept
up to variable degrees, all afternoon. There were times when it was
quite thick, and there were accumulations in some zones that exceed
the official 1cm total by quite a bit due to wind shaped drifting.

We wonder if the collection point for the snowfall measurement may
have been in a spot where wind affected it because we would have
guessed the total at more like 3 to 4 cm’s over mid-Mountain zones
on both Versant Sud, South and Versant Nord, North over the space
of 2.5 to 3 hours, and... it was still coming down quite nicely at Last
Run.

During the course of the afternoon, you could see that the active
snowfall was occurring in bands of intensity passing overhead, so
there were periods of wind sheltered tranquillity that offered some
spectacularly scenic moments of iconic Tremblant winter views.

Not only is the above POV “Post Card” beautiful, but as any
skier will instantly recognize, there is a very sweet, untracked
fresh snow covering here that was just waiting for someone
to carve tracks on.

No doubt, the base yesterday was quite a bit more solid
than it had been the previous day, but that was completely
understandable in the sense that it had a full 24 hours
of sub-zero to react in, and the Laws of Physics apply.

Never-the-less Mountain Op’s delivered a very useable
coverage of groomed top layers that you could get good
carving edge on on all Green through Black trail ratings.

There were icy bits, and the whole Mountain was “Firm”
underneath, but we did not encounter any large sheets
of ice in our experience. We think anyones perception
of “Icy” will be directly related to the sharpness of their
edges and if we were right about anything for yesterday,
it was the value of tuned edges for optimal control.

If we’re right about the positive effects for today of another
grooming cycle, and additional depths of loose top layers,
then we should see a noticeable difference in the amount of
edge-set at higher speeds that can be safely used.

Weather Notes:

We intentionally are running a 24hr. period for today that shows
the span of the Weather Warning Event posted below, and also
clearly shows the return to a sunny sky for Open hours tomorrow.

No one can do anything about the weather, but, in our favour,
1) the nasty wet bits are through the night and not during
open hours, 2) the rain icons are small, indicating a typically
light pattern of precipitation that 80% of the time passes
over in bands, so it is possible, and frequently happens that
the Mountain may not see much or any of this. 3) at the indicated
Sud, South base temp’s, cooler Mountain elevations could produce
snow for at least a portion of this time-frame, 4) with rising temps
there will likely be a fair degree of trail surface softening, so the
Friday Ski/Board performance could actually be fantastic!

These types of Weather Swings are completely normal
within any winter, but in our case this week, we’ve had less
rain and way shorter time exposure than many areas to the
South, so once again, thank goodness for Tremblant’s more
Northerly latitude that favours winter conditions when there
are regional tipping point, near Zero C temp oscillations.

Conditions Notes:

Today is “Day 2” of grooming refinement since the warm bit
so, as mentioned above, this is when we should see a noticeable
increase in the depth, consistency and wider scope of coverage
for soft top layers of loose snow, especially with the additional
fresh snowfall mixed in.

In last nights Apres Ski, we covered the extra attention that
our Trail Case study of Versant Nord, North Side Trail # 84,
Expo received, and we think you’ll see that kind of refinement
today over a much larger expanse and including all skill level terrain.

When the weather generates any degree of solidifying firmness
in dropping temps, Tremblant’s Mountain Op’s seems to have
adopted a default of groomed smoothness that makes any conditions
far, far easier. A great example of that was Versant Nord, North Side
Trail # 57, Devils River. Below is a mid-point downward POV and
we can tell you that even with a very firm base here, there was good
traction and smooth as a bowling alley, so rocket fast and fun!

If there is any change in the Open Trails List for today,
we would expect that there may be more opening
trails possible. If the weather really softens things up
for tomorrow, you could see a huge jump if the Sous Bois,
Glades, Hors Piste, Un-Groomed soften into the safety zone,
maybe(?).
