T360 Late Evening Apres Ski Edit Under Construct @ 9:44 P.M.

Please accept our apologies for not having this Apres Ski
edit up sooner. We had hoped for 8:00 P.M. but an
unpredictable delay held us up... sorry about that... but...

We got all the speed and coverage quality we hoped for
in our original post below, and as far as the “Fun” level...

Here’s what some of your friends were doing all day at Tremblant...

Sorry for the slightly out of focus, and the fringing
around the edges. This is a telephoto shot from
the bottom of Versant Nord, North side trail # 84,
Cossak, viewing up the pitch in the somewhat misty,
foggy, and definitely flat, low contrast ambient light, but...
we think the action is also definitely worth it!!!

Some of your other friends were looking for easy cruisers...

Todays Skiing was an extension of the concept we introduced
a day or three ago when we referred to “Select” qualities
within the open terrain. Up until about a week ago, the
overall excellence in the terrain was a general reference,
for all intents and purposes, applicable across the entire range
of skill levels, as well as within both groomed and un-groomed
open slopes. To be able to say that in mid-April is already
a very unusual and wonderful thing. Now, with all the recent
warm and wet weather, the inevitable impact on snow
surfaces has changed the highest quality terrain references
from that general context to “Select”. What that really means
in practical terms, is that firstly, you will have to search more/farther,
to find those ideal conditions that suit your skills and abilities,
and secondly, there will be less of that ideal terrain now, just
because the snow in the third week of April is melting away...

"Perfectly Obvious” you say, “It’s Spring, what do you expect?”,
sure, and yes, but the “Kicker” is, by historic standards, that...

we’d normally having this conversation in the third week of March,
not April...

...and that’s the really big take-away from this Apres
Ski report, here is an April 20,21,22 closing weekend, that skis
like any historic end of March.

It’s Exceptional!

Above:
Anecdotal example: in over 4 decades of T360 Team experience,
we have never seen this much snow, still on Versant Nord, North
side trail # 65, Banzai at any date after mid April, ever.

Plus... Rainy??? What Rainy?

We were absolutely bone-dry all day. In our experience,
despite the primarily overcast sky, not a single drop of
rain, however, we did hear there were some sprinkles
felt near last run which ended up at 4:00 P.M.

For Tomorrow And Monday...
With the last two days of the season forecast to see
“Sunny” and temps in the +14/15 C range, the attendance
should be a lot better than today, but the extra traffic,
with real heat, is likely to generate some mogul zones
that were not there today.

------------ 9:35 A.M. Update -------------------

This may give you some insight why we use the
terms “Variables”, “Possibilities”, “Wild Cards”,
“Potentials”, "Evolving”, etc., etc., et al.

This is real, this is Tremblant right now!

Which way will it go? Not sure...

One sort of “Spooky” aspect of all this is that the wind in the
old village is near calm, but you can here it Howling like a
lonely Wolf over the Mountain. Mother Nature seems to be trying
to make up her mind about who’s winning. We have Fans
riding up the Gondola at this time telling us it has slowed
to a crawl and that there is an unusual amount of side-to-side
swinging.

-------------------------------------------------------

The Default Is “Smooth”.

Everything and Anything are way, way easier
when the grooming renders smooth to begin with.
This basic concept is no less true or applicable in
warm spring, than it is in deep winter. One of the
biggest differences of course, is right now you’re
warm to start with, and getting warmer as the day
matures.

Today we get see and understand the durable characteristics
of the entire seasons retained frost in the substrates as it
relates to its ability as a stored refrigerant to preserve Trail
Base coverage and quality after a very heavy warm thermal
event of combined warmth in both wind and rain.

What we are confidently hopeful for is that the frost from below
may still be acting as a significant barrier to thaw from above.
If we are right, we should still see not only the great coverage
we’ve enjoyed up til now, but the inherent speed in the surfaces
preserved as well.

Weather Notes:

Very happy to report that at actual First Tracks,
there is a brightness in the sky that has every
appearance of the Sun trying to poke through
the cloud!!!

Will that materialize into a big or lasting deviation
from the forecast?

We have no way of knowing for sure, but it’s
a great sign that there could be unexpected
benefits today!!!

Conditions Notes:

Very much an a la Carte day in terms of evolving conditions
after the lifts fire up. Some of the big variables are going
to be directly proportional to attendance. If the weather
forecast has scared off some of the “Fair Weather” Skiers,
there could be Corduroy descent lines all day... again.
If loads of weekend warriors show up, due to the sustained
warmth and consequent softness, things could get mogul’d
in relatively short time spans.

There’s just no way to accurately predict the broad range
of eventual possibilities, however one of the best indicators
for an individually rewarding Ski/Board day is the Open Trail
count which tells us the Groomed Trail Network Base has
come through the rainy period intact, so there is a very good
range of choice to explore.

There are quite a few “Progressive” or gradual trail openings
pending Ski Patrol clearance, so there are chances that the
Open Trail List could change either up or down as those
ongoing determinations are made.

We are going to make this a short morning report as the
obvious number of “Wild Cards” could generate almost
opposite benefit or hazard, so ultimately, the field work
today will be the only relevant context worth considering.
Hope to see you here at Apres Ski. We will attempt to
have an early edition Apres Ski by 8:00 P.M.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
