T360 Early Evening Apres Ski Edit, under construction at 7:08 P.M.
There were some shortfalls in the weather forecast.
Note that we did not say inaccuracies, but the basic
numbers/data do not convey the combined effect of
windspeed and humidity in a frontal facing exposure.
The net effect was that the wind had “bite” that
amplified the wind chill. The very positive side of
the weather was the thickly falling, beautifully dense,
big, fluffy-flake, super-fine, natural snowfall.
Where the wind was not pushing it off, the snow came
down at an accumulation rate that was visible almost by
the run. It was another day where in some areas, tracks
made one run, were being erased by fill-in when you came
right back.
The Nor-West/Westerly winds generated an over-the-summit
fill-in effect over the entire Versant Nord sector. Riding up
the Expo Quad all that became immediately apparent. In the
past, the Expo pitch has looked very raw with jagged rock and
all its naturally uneven contours, until it got dumped on today...

It is fair to say that this snowfall system has been generally
favourable to the Nord/North where there are many examples
of rapid fill-in above and beyond the statistical total.
Below:
We have been monitoring the Contour Grooming project
on Sissy Schuss for several days. There are construction
pic’s in yesterdays reporting. It’s Open today.
It is a descending serpentine course and it ends at the
Gagnon/Sissy side-door intersection. Obviously, the new
snowfall is going to be valuable there, but for todays
Pic.taking, it is rather snow-filtered.

There are some direct wind facing pitches exhibiting icy
patches. These zones are where the combinations of wind
force and traffic are revealing substrates from previous
warm weather events, so we believe our cautionary speed
notes for first time descents are absolutely warranted.
If you used care and had fresh edges, McCulloch was at least
smooth, however if you were reckless and had dull edges,
you were a prime candidate to become a gravitational missile
as there were multiple slick zones that were not responsive
to turning or braking effort. We see this as a temporary
stage in the evolution to winter. Tomorrow should be better.
The fog just added another challenge as contrast to safely
navigate was diminished to the point that very slow speeds
had to be used to stay in control. There were select descent
lines that had soft snow, but they were narrow,, on the extreme
outboard trail edges and required many short-radius turns to stay within.

For tomorrow, Sunny, Cold, and moderate Nor-West winds
coming up Beauvallon. The Skiing should be Squeaky Cold
Snow Excellent, especially on the Nord/North, but you will
need to bundle up wherever you are.

47(*) PRELIMINARY Open Trails -Subject To Morning Confirmations.
Here is the basis for what we start with today.
100% Snow White Winter.
12.17.19.TGV.Quad.Views.Over.McCulloch.Lac.T.d.jpg
100% Fun For The Whole Family.
12.17.19.Sud.South.Views.Over.Bon.Vivant.La.Crete.To.Nansen.Haut.Upper.d.jpg
If you can go... do it.
We estimate nearly 30cm’s of fresh snowfall
in 48 hours or so, that have elevated conditions
to new levels across all Skill Level terrain.
We think there is at least some possibility
of expansion in the Open terrain, but we could
also understand if things remained with
similar Open trail numbers due to ongoing
trail development/construction.

It’s easy snow for Beginner learning on,
it's easy snow for Expert high performance,
both low friction and very high grip.
A Short Photo Utility Note:
We apologize for limited photography within this recent timeframe
due to the very challenging atmospheric conditions that while
great for building Ski Conditions, are far less than ideal for
the kinds of dynamic action or panoramic shots we all like to see.
It’s been very grey outdoors, mostly for weeks, and that does
impact pic. opportunities, especially when combined with
all forms of precipitation that obscure lens or soak function
controls to shut-down. We can only say that we are overjoyed
to have these problems because of the immense benefit that
“Bad” winter weather has on “Great” Ski/Board conditions.
As a Skier or Boarder just out for time on the slopes, you are
never really deterred by “Grey” because in the moment, it is
most often the reason you’re having an excellent day exploring
trails. We want to leave all far-away readers with this exact thought,
the grey days that can make pic’s seem a bit dull, are the
precise reason you’re going to have such an excellent experience
when you arrive.
Ambient Pic. light “Grey”,
Ambient Ski Conditions “Great” !!!

Above:
The Nord/North Side Gagnon access Sissy Schuss Haut, Upper
to Fuddle-Duddle Bas, Lower was very close to flawless yesterday.
Fast, smooth with huge lateral grip is a wonderful combination and
you could do just about any style here without so much as a single
snowflake out of place.
Weather Notes:
Easy, Easy, Early Winter!
Conditions Notes:
The Magic Word Is “Forgiving”.
General conditions right now are some of the most versatile
and adaptable surfaces any Ski Resort can have. They
have very high degrees of “Forgiveness” in them.
They are so soft and smooth that they will absorb minor
technique errors without grabbing edges or pushing back,
so the net result is you will either find everything easy,
or if you want to step up the challenge to evolve your
skills, you can try introducing more steepness or more
speed without fear losing the confident, sure-footed
feeling of having the ability to maintain control if you need
to put on the brakes or make safe directional/steering alterations.
This is the snow that makes everyone look good within
their appropriate skill level terrain.
Two Minor Cautionary Notes:
Caution and slow speed control for safety are required in some
pre-existing very steep and/or direct wind facing icy bits that are
primarily within the most demanding Expert Black Diamond terrain,
but these areas are quite small and tend to be in patterns that are
somewhat predictable.
Caution is still required in the Sous Bois, Hors Piste, Un-Groomed
as we are technically still at early season “Fall” base levels, so
you need to use strict, low speed, Line-of-sight navigation,
especially on initial descents. Small organic and some granite
hazards are lurking around and you just need to explore carefully
before you go blasting through the bush.

Please Note: Weekend Planners:
65 Open Trails should see all 4 Sectors Open
and a considerably higher overall performance
and quality level on all skill level terrain.
