T360 Midnight Apres Ski Edit @ 11:58 P.M.

A very short Apres Ski to convey a seriously positive experience...

Here’s what a lot of us did all day at Tremblant...

This is the common level of groomed trail snow surface performance
we experienced all day at Tremblant today.

Everything this pic. above tells you about groomed performance
is real and we think every experienced skier that sees it will
instantly understand exactly how good that is.

The temps were certainly on the cool side, a prelude to the
polar vortex arriving at the end of the week(?), however,
the overnight cold effect on the snow, plus the grooming
refinement we expected, absolutely delivered superb results.

The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed
were very individualistic, from fantastic to raw, but
for sure, legitimate Experts only. Unfortunately, the
Un-Groomed Banzai Bas/Lower sample we used this
morning was actually closed, but we skied by it on
the way to Devils River and it was squarely in the “raw”
category today, so we’re wondering if it may get a
grooming pass to even out the hazards. This trail
usually does eventually get groomed, but that does
not necessarily fit into a specific annual time slot so
we could be wrong in the immediate sense.

More in the morning, but with this kind of
quality, variety and warmer daytime temps, plus
another night of cool with grooming...

You may want to disappear to Tremblant tomorrow.

Expert Favour, Expert Fun!

60 cm’s of fresh snow in a week is a significant addition
to both the groomed base and the open Sous Bois/Bush
zones, however there is a considerable technical element
required for the Expert levels across the board due to
the loft in the soft, where steeper pitches can be prone
to mogul formations and deep forest snow can have highly
variable rates of descent resistance due to traffic generated
use patterns in tracked depths.

Weather Notes:

Three days of cool winter, followed by two days of cold winter.

Get ready for a dip in the temps folks. The Polar Vortex is
on the way South-East and all of Eastern North America is
going to feel it between now and the weekend.

The weather news headlines are busy saying “Coldest In Years”,
but we would disagree because it’s just the coldest since last
year when we had multiple January early mornings at -35C.
At least in this case, it’s only forecasted for a couple of days, so far.

--------- Supplementary Weather Forecast Data: ----------------

Part of what you can see here blow is the wavy
nature of the front of the cold air masses proceeding
the actual arrival of the Polar Vortex. As the pattern
moves from West To East you can see that the Southern
edge of cool goes up/down this week, giving us 2 relatively
warm days on Wed./Thurs., before the cold really settles in
over Friday and Saturday.

There should be a lot of this out there today...

Conditions Notes:

In The Groomed:

Todays rates of groomed compaction should show a
considerable degree of consolidation from yesterday,
and over an extensive, wider range of terrain, as the
incremental steps in achieving greater density progress
every night with repeat mechanical pressure being applied.

“Loft”, or the air-space between crystals in newly fallen
cool, dry snow can only be compressed to ideal density
when a single snowfall event is around 10cm’s, so when
you’ve got multiple snowfalls totalling 60cm’s in a one
week period, there is bound to be residual softness for
days following.

It is this residual softness that can generate moguls
that are directly related to pitch angles, so for Beginners,
it is likely that you will want to stick with basic Greens
such as Nansen and P’tit Bonheur. For Intermediates,
it’s a far more complex situation because here we find
both more variety in pitches, plus there are far greater
ranges of skill level sharing, so it is vital for this group
to warm up thoroughly on the easy Blue slopes before
ranging into greater challenge.

A Beginner/Intermediate Technique Footnote:

“Assertive Confidence” is a bit of an intangible mental
element in learning any very physical sport, but it is
especially important in Skiing as variable conditions
that require technical elements are not particularly
forgiving to timid approaches.

Any time there is a bit of softness that can inhibit turning
or stopping initiation, it is necessary to be somewhat forceful
in basic control moves. This is best accomplished with a low,
forward leaning position with your hands also well up and forward
for overall dynamic athletic balance.

For both Beginners and Intermediates, you want to awaken
your “Inner Tiger” and activate that “Assertive Confidence”.

Moving on...

In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades And Un-Groomed:

Individual degrees of quality and challenge due to
traffic generated use patterns with evolving mogul
generation. Basically, where there have been the
most descents, there have been the most established
bumps and the top photo of Banzai Bas/Lower is only
one great example of this type of condition. When we
lead off with “Expert Favour”, this is a case in point
where the “forgiveness” is reduced by very challenging
large moguls with clearly marked natural hazards.
These are not the days where Experts should be dragging
lesser skilled friends into complex zones where there
are much lower margins for error.

Otherwise and generally, enjoyment in any cool/cold
conditions is directly related to garment thermal efficiency
and that does not necessarily mean more layers, as
even the warmest gear is not as effective compared to
lesser insulation if the fastenings and overlaps are not
properly secured.
