Very Cool Snow... Very Cool Skiing!

For all those who think in Degrees C, the temp finally got
up to -12.77 C. Out of the wind, you could feel direct
warming solar energy within seconds. In the wind, the
cool had a wee bit of bite. No matter where you where,
the skiing was, and will be today... excellent.

Yesterday we wrote extensively about the grooming
of Versant Nord/North Side trail # 66, Le Tunnel.
Please review that if you didn’t catch it already,
but in the meantime, an expansion of the points made...

Welcome Kingston Ontario Tremblant Fans!

(Please Note: The following pic.s have significant shadow
and contrast issues due to the trail location being in the
full Summit shade of the low sun in the mid-January sky.
The ambient light can not be accurately rendered by camera,
however the human eye will easily adapt and find more than
adequate light for a well illuminated descent.)

As part of our discussion, we suggest that in its grooming
revealed magnificent natural contours, Le Tunnel is suitable
for a 100 X’s greater, far wider skill set audience than it is in
raw, giant moguls mode. Case-in-point... Kingston Ontario
guests who might never have gone here as a bump-zone,
found great appreciation on multiple levels here and told us
their descent experience on Le Tunnel would now be a
highlight of their trip.

For us, that’s both reward enough and proof enough
of our conceptual virtues applied to the refined grooming
excellence of this gorgeous trail.

Proof Of Concept: A confident, advanced Intermediate with
a modest little coaching can have an excellent run on Le Tunnel
when groomed.

“A Highlight Of Our Trip."

Conditions Notes:

Cryogenics is the study of cold effects on materials. What we have
at Tremblant now is cryogenic snow. This is snow that is separate
and distinct from snow that is warmer and it has different physical
characteristics, one of the greatest of which is the dryness or
lack of internal humidity that means it can only be packed by
mechanical pressure. Warmer snow with more humidity can
more easily be packed because the dampness generates an
adhesive-like bonding capability. One of the best ways to
illustrate the difference, one that experienced kids of all ages
will know, is the ability to make a snowball from these two
different types of snow. The cryogenic cold snow being light
and dry does not pack into a snowball easily. It’s hard to
compress enough to get it to stick together and when thrown,
it may quickly fall apart in mid-air. Warmer high humidity
snow on the other hand, easily packs to a very high density
from adhesive sticky-wet bonding and will hold it’s solid shape
until impact.

In The Groomed:

Where groomed, the immense weight of the machinery passing
over, generates a mechanical only bonding of cryogenic snow
and it has unique performance properties that are a joy to ski on,
mostly because of it's very high qualities of control. It is not that
it is necessarily better than warmer snow, just different, and typically,
if we have a good stretch of cool, virtually ice free, wall-to-wall
and top-to-bottom. In that regard, the range of glitch-free, super
fine, front-side carving quality at Tremblant continues to be remarkably
consistent and reliable over the entire array of the groomed footprint.

In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades/Un-Groomed:

The light dryness of this cool snow can be illustrated
by the Un-Groomed Versant Nord/North Side Expo
Haut/Upper pic. below. All the snow-dust you see
in the air is the sign of supreme crystalline dryness.
Any of the little clumps you see have zero forward
resistance and instantly fall apart and also turn into
dust on contact.

If you want to know how this dry, loose snow performs in
the Sous Bois/Bush, just add some imaginary trees to the
above...

Generally:

It’s a prime January Weekend Saturday... it may be busy...

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you “Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.
