102(*) Open Trails.
Please Note: There is and has been a slight
contradiction in the Official data “%", as Versant
Sud/South Side # 24 Ryan Bas/Lower is shown
as closed. Ryan Bas/Lower is considered a
separate and distinct trail from Ryan Haut/Upper
even though it shares the same number.

Confirmed... Less slick or icy bits than yesterday,
very noticeable upgrade in overall groomed quality.

Weather Notes:

Another day of forecast sunny, but so-far it’s all of
overcast, grey, and rather dull, flat light. It’s early
though, so we hope that eventually the hourly forecast
prevails. The periodic appearance of snowflakes in
the air may suggest otherwise...

In our Conditions Notes below we discuss very densely
packed snow generating slick or icy sensations underfoot
if you have dull edges. The Devils River entrance pictured
above is a prime example of that. There are a couple of
icy flow-bits under contours here, but far and away, the
predominant element is just extremely dense, packed,
groomed snow that has had dozens of heavy machine
cycles over it. With sharp edges and lots of turns, this
zone is no problem and easy for it’s Black rated skills
challenge level.

Conditions Notes:

In The Groomed:

The recent string of almost warm days did eventually
cause a wee bit of surface softening which has now
been re-solidified and is evident as some icy zones
on steeper pitches, where trails intersect, at or below
some topographical crests or where traffic patterns
generate sufficient wear.

We would estimate the vast bulk of the open groomed
terrain, is very fine to excellent and at roughly 85%, however,
the small percentage of icy effected may be encountered
at critical points in descent paths so it is important to
observe the patterns of occurrence and compensate in
advance with cautious speed and situational awareness
for both the conditions and necessary extra wide passing
margins around others.

If anything, we would expect those zones to be reduced
today, as compared to yesterday, because this is day-2
of this cool little winter reboot we’re in and the second
night-shift of grooming should have produced a wider
range of refinement.

Your perceptions of any of the above will be directly
proportional to the state of tune of you skis/board edges. Period.

If you have dull edges you will think it much more icy
than it is because there are also zones of very densely
packed/groomed snow that will feel slick underfoot
unless you have the edge to hold over them. This is
a critical performance point considering that the
conditions are extremely fast and speed needs to be
kept under absolute control.

In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades And Un-Groomed:

Continued very much individualistic, trail-by-trail,
zone-by-zone, highly variable conditions ranging
from raw to excellent with an absolute Experts only
caveat.

It is only January 30, not February 29, so seasonal
maturity in accumulated depths has not yet happened
and until we get more snowfall these trail categories
are likely to remain sensitive.

All initial exploration within these trails and zones
need cautious, thorough, deliberate evaluation before
ripping around and if you are a ski-buddy mentor with
less skillful or experienced friends along with you,
do not drag or dare them into these areas until you
have first inspected for very high standards of safety.

For genuine experienced Experts there are amazingly still
untracked powder lines in the Hors Piste/Sous Bois, but
you’ll need to go further out to find them and/or some
of the terrain they can be found in require the highest
levels of technical proficiency and muscle reserves.

Conditions Summary:

There are performance sensitivities within most open
terrain categories that are very susceptible to equipment
condition in terms of edge sharpness, and in all open
trail categories pertaining to your actual, realistic skill
level. One of the best ways to match trail selection with
skill level is to consult frequently with the unique
Tremblant Info.Ski Crew identified by their bright yellow
jackets with the big “?” on the back.

Their Mountain intel comes from actually skiing the open
terrain as well as from Official Mountain Op’s sources.
They are radio controlled and critical updates are available
on a minute-by-minute basis.

If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you “Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.
