The Best Thing That Can Be Said About The Freezing Rain...

It Happened While You Were Sleeping.

Weather Notes:

The reason why there’s hope for nearly, practically, mostly,
maybe, possibly almost all dry or very little active precipitation
over upper elevations today is that the forecast indicators are
for “Light” rainy bits.

Light rainy bits almost always occurs in small, quickly passing,
regionally transient zones that are below the cloud ceiling.
There are some chances that the Mountain elevations could
not see much more than cloud foggy drizzle because those
transient zones are in some other corners of the region, or
they get diverted around the base of the Mountain by ground
or lower valley level wind shaping. If you look at the weather
data and see that the cloud ceiling is at 300 Metres, that’s
really low and consequently there could be huge differences
in activity in these strata above/below.

We could be wrong, but we refer back to our 80/20 weather
rule where 80 % of the time the weather over the Trail network
is way, way less rainy than over base ground levels.

Conditions Notes:

In The Groomed:

Crusty overtones over a warm but very shallow base.
We specifically say shallow because the bulk of the
embedded cold from the recent cold-snap has not
gone anywhere yet due to convection, i.e., cold
sinks, heat rises. This simple application of the
Laws Of Physics should help keep the base integrity
throughout this thermal wet event. The unknown
wild cards for today are the degrees above Zero C it
could reach over trail network elevations, the amounts
and forms of precipitation, and the wind values that
can amplify warm/wet effects.

You’ll need to be ready for anything.

In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed:

Here are where the real sensitivities lie because a membrane
of freezing rain can act as a turning inhibitor. It does that by
the unfavourable effects of leverage, and more particularly,
reverse leverage. What can happen is that ski tips can easily
break through the ice crust at the weighted start of any
turn, but once the tips are below the crust, the reverse
leverage required to break the tips upward, back through
the crust is about 10 times greater than the downward
motion. It is almost impossible for any human to do that
and consequently turns to avoid trees/rocks/cliffs etc.,
may not be possible. Obviously not safe.

When you see the Sous Bois zones of the entire Edge Sector,
the Nord/North Sector, and the Soleil Sector all simultaneously
overnight closed, you know there are safety issues.

It is possible that the Ski Patrol has just deemed all these
Sous Bois zones closed until they can individually inspect and
confirm safe use, so we may or may not see reopen’s quicky.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you “Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.
