3/8/14 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Apres Mid-Night, Apres Ski….

Daytime High Temp got very briefly to +1 C at South Resort Base Level,
so with the Elevation Differential, virtually the Whole Mountain stayed
just below. No doubt Solar Softening happens at these close-to-freezing,
but Hey!… it’s March 8th!

Anyway, tonight sees the temps drop well back to a more Wintery -18 C
Overnight, which could help render out a very fine Freeze Dried Surface
when combined with the All-Nighter Grooming Mountain Crews are out
there doing right now.

The weather forecast for Sunday is for Sun, South Base Level -5 C High Temp,
West Winds at Moderate Speeds crossing the Summit from Kandahar, moving
towards Lowell Thomas. It will be a comparatively Mild Winter Day
with Spectacular Scenery.

Coverage will be 100% and there will be Great Skiing/Boarding. Tuned Edges
will absolutely be your Best Friends for tomorrow.

87(*) Open Trails on the 4 Sides of “Spring Cycled” Slopes of Tremblant.

What we mean by that is Yesterday Warm, Overnight Froze.

Please Note: there are actually 93 Trails in use, but 5 are designated
“Race” and are not included in the Open Total.

From the depths of Thursday night’s -35 C to Fridays Daytime High @ Zero C
plus the Softening effects of the very direct Solar Energy, it’s not hard to
understand that the very top layer of Snow experienced a change in
physical properties associated with moisture content. A return to Sub-Zero
brings us to this morning with the inevitable consequence of a “Skin”
that will be Groomed out.

With Tremblant’s very effective Grooming process, the vast majority of
Today’s Surfaces will have been rendered into Fine, very nicely skiable
particle size, however, there may be some very firm or icy bits for a
while this morning.

The Skiing and Boarding are going to be understandably very fast too,
but with any sort of surface firmness underfoot, braking control will be
reduced to variable degrees, so absolute speed control is essential on
initial explorations.

There has been a tremendous change in the Natural Environment in the
last 24 hours. Yesterday at this same time it was -25 C and there had been
no recent interruption in Pure Winter Snow. Gorgeous, High Performance
Groomed Terrain, but Full face-mask skin protection required as shown in
this Lower Expo sample below.

Today, it is now -4 C, so the major difference is in the “User Friendly”
temperature factor, but as noted above, the “heat” that briefly occurred
in the afternoon yesterday, will have somewhat changed the “Pure Winter”
part of the Snow to now include bits of overnight Spring firmness, as what was
slightly thawed, re-solidified overnight.

Got “Edges”?

The trade-off for the Easy Dress Code today, is only in what will now
include a more variable daily surface dynamic that Mountain Users will need
to pay strict attention to during the course of the day. There is potential
for Icy. Mid-Day Solar energy will soften more directly exposed South and
Soleil sectors the quickest, so shifting North will get you back to Firm.
Conversely, if you’re finding things too firm on the North, head South.

This extends to a huge Tremblant advantage because if the South gets too soft,
the more shadowed North will typically be just softening nicely, so by doing
nothing other than switching sides, you can stay in the very sweetest zones
of these daily Spring patterns.

Other Ski Areas that are largely Single Direction facing ridges will not
have this Multi-sided array of conditions as they tend to be totally affected
either one way or the other.

Over the years, we’ve really come to appreciate this Tremblant advantage,
it simply means you can always find great Skiing within the range of
Tremblant’s multi-sided Open Terrain.
