12/17/14 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Prime-time Apres Ski @ 8:00 P.M.

Please Note: Photography in Fog is challenging and difficult, Photography in
Great Swirling Quarter Size Snowflakes is close to impossible...
Had ‘em both today, so we do our best with practical limitations for
overwhelming Natural Weather factors.

There’s no way you make anything like this up,
only the hand of Mother Nature could create such
etherial, majestic, serene and stunningly beautiful
surroundings...

And, there is no camera on Earth that could adequately capture the
natural tranquillity one senses standing before it.

The usual Base to Summit Temp spread did not exist to it’s normal extent.
The Summit breezes were warm and that had a predictable effect on surfaces,
however the softening did not penetrate into the base by more than an inch or two.

Atmospheric Conditions included Foggy Damp Airborne Particles, Sleet-Like Frozen
Airborne Particles and Snowfall. There will be some who will complain about being wet.
It’s still fall. This happens... the good part, as far as we’re concerned, is how
resilient the Base is. Despite the occasional run-in with this “Dampness” we did
not get soaked at all, and when it was frozen or snow, the worst was a
crunchy snow crust across one’s frontal area. Utility wise, Vision was the
most limiting factor. Frequent Lens wiping Trail-side breaks were
necessary from time to time. the weather was definitely passing in Bands,
so there were alternating wetter/dryer time periods.

Johannsen on the South Side Resort Base had the most direct Thermal exposure
and while surfaces did soften up, they did not become mogul’d in late afternoon
and, they showed good speed and traction, all day.

The Softening Effect was quite equally felt on both North and South sides.
Below, Beauchemin was super fast, perhaps a bit too fast as there were
many(not those pictured below), who were traveling at speeds that would
have been quite difficult to allow them adequate braking or emergency evasive
moves if any of the Beginners there made erratic moves.

Shred This:

The Vast Majority Of Tremblant’s Open Terrain was in Wonderfully,
Universally, Shred-able Condition.

Damp??? Maybe, but when you’re flying’ around haven’ this much fun,
you do not notice it so much, and the traction, for about 97.9 %, was
impeccable. We ran out of muscle before time...

Temps could get down to -6C overnight, so you will need to be watching
out for Icy Bits to begin with tomorrow morning. It will be Mega-Fast,
the secret will be the ability to Stop.

37(*) Open Trails on the South and North Sectors at #Tremblant.

New, Fresh Snow...

Not a Blizzard by any stretch, but... more like a "Heavy Dusting”.
The Official Tremblant.ca Snow Report is listing the Accumulation
up on the Summit at 3CM, so a little over an inch for our Non-Metric
American Cousin’s, just enough to refresh Open Terrain Surfaces with a
very sweet Sugar Coating that will definitely contribute towards quality
and coverage.

During the Snowfall event itself, there were very heavy Squall Lines that
caused Regional Road Travel to be significantly delayed. Reduced Vision,
sometimes down to a few White-Out metres, accidents, creeping Elder-Traffic
and even people going the wrong way onto one way Highway entrances
‘cause they just could not see properly. Sloppy, Messy, full of Salt and Sand,
Road Crews were doing their best to keep up, but there were many areas where
that was not possible, so returning late, we took to the Back Roads and found...

No Salt Added, No Sand Added, Just Un-Plowed,
Pure, Snow White Winter Driving!

You just Know that if the driving is like this, the Mountain must
certainly be seeing some similar conditions...

What we suspect, is that Tremblant’s Open Terrain has hopefully benefited
from some of this “Snow Squall” activity, and we may yet find some portions
of the Mountain that have more than the Stat Total due to Drifting Factors.

Weather Notes:

Regional Weather has a range of Temps from up to +5C, but “Thank Goodness
For “North”, as in Latitude, at Tremblant the current South Base Temp is right on
Zero and if it does break into “Plus” here, it is forecasted to be for only a single
degree, and for about 6 hours today, then not again for over two weeks of Model
Forecast.

To the South, it’s a different story as Plus Values may be seen repeatedly
over the same two week forecast period.

For those researching Early Pre-Christmas Ski Board Conditions and looking
at this record at any time in the future, we want to point out this “North”
advantage Tremblant Naturally has in the Early Season.

We Love this Pic Below, sent to us by Sacha Leclair from Monday Morning and
things should look very much the same starting out today, so it is absolutely
worth repeating.

UTILITY NOTES:

1) Any form of appropriate “Warm” Temp Rated Base coating/Wax
may be your best friend today.

2) Grey, Snowy Overcast with a potentially foggy component may mean
“Yellow Lens” Advisory in order to facilitate optimized Vision.

3) Traction, Grip and Control should be right up there at Best-So-Far Levels.
Speed may be a different thing. Oh, it will be quick alright, but with any
Close to Zero temps, there may be some Damp-Induced surface resistance,
so the jury is out on the Speed thing.

4) Very light Easterly Breezes crossing the Summit from Lowell Thomas
towards McCulloch and Very Mild, but just below Zero C Mountain temp’s
will make this a Super-Easy Comfort Day.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
