2/4/18 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Apres Ski, Just Apres Midnight @ 12:09 A.M.

It Was An Intensely Snowy Day.

This below may look like Fog, but it was all Snow,
Very, Very, Fine, as in small, perfectly dry, and
Falling Fast and Heavy.

There Was Abundant Fresh, New Snowfall over Tremblant’s
complete footprint, however some zones had more favourable
retention or drifted accumulations.

We’ve been monitoring McCulloch for comparative daily
differences, and the surfaces were much the same feel
underfoot today, but Vision was a problem in the dense snowfall.
In the very grey light and flying snow, it was extremely difficult
to distinguish Mogul dimensions completely, so that meant
interruptions to recover from unexpected launches airborne if
you misjudged the lift from a ramp you couldn’t quite see.

We were wrong on the Mountain Guest Traffic pattern
for today, and there was a very healthy group out as
evidenced by the occupied far corners of the Parking
Zones that tell us it may have been one of the top 10
attendance days, so far this season. There were some
departing right at noon, but it was not the mass exodus
by 1:00p.m we might be used to on other Super-Bowl
Sunday’s.

We were right about all the precautions necessary to have a safe, fun day.
The thickness in the snow that had already fallen, and continued to fall in,
was enough to send a lot of folks into the bush, or unexpectedly head over
heels. The Ski Patrol were very busy.

The combination of warmer and deep certainly raised the challenge
level for everyone in the Muscle department too. Holding a carving
edge through random deep tracks takes a lot of Stabilizer Action with
almost instantly shifting forward resistance. It was Work-out Snow.

For Experts, if you could find the rhythm through the Moguls
you could actually use them for Jump Turns in the air, but the
grey light meant that there were times you were actually
performing “Leaps Of Faith” with those jumps when the landings
weren’t always visibly/predictably soft or grippy.

Summary: A day of Very Technical Skiing that requires Pin-Sharp
Balance and quick reflexes to stay on top of conditions that can
change over the next crest or below the next turn. 90% of the
problems were associated with “Too Much Snow”, all at once...

As Far As Tomorrow(2.5.18) Goes...

Sunny, Moderate Nor-West Winds rising up the Mountain over
Beauvallon and headed for Lowell Thomas and temps between
-15C and -11C.

With tonights Grooming and Light Weekday Traffic, it really
should be quite fine! There may be some lingering thickness
in places, but this much new snow can take a couple of days
to optimize compacted density that’s mogul resistant.

Sorry for the shaded, flat, low contrast, end of day light quality,
but the impression of surface characteristics is 100% accurate
as depicted by this Super-Shred Hockey Stop on Versant Nord,
North Side, Sissy Schuss Haut, Upper. This was an exemplary,
very fine carving zone and there were a lot of Instructors and
Coaches with big groups training here for exactly that reason.

(**)When we say “This”, we are referring to BOTH the “Shred” Performance
qualities, as well as the quality of the pre-existing Groomed Base.

(**)We are intentionally Not Specifying “How Much” more snow
because this area could have seen considerable drift-in overnight
that exceeds the statistical total, And/Or, who knows how much
will fall during the day, today and tonight!

Conditions Notes:

Heavy Accumulations of New Snowfall can present extra challenge
for Beginners and Intermediates due to thickness that can become tracked
or built up into Mogul formations by daily traffic.

It is wise to default down to more gentle or predictable Terrain
if you are experiencing any moments of control compromise.
Catching an Edge once or twice is a sign that you should slow
down or exert more energy into maintaining a stable platform
and the easiest way to do that may be to choose Trails with less slope.

Experts: The wind has shaped the New Snow to variable degrees,
so where there have been higher velocities over Wide Open Trail
Surfaces, there can be exposed Firm or Icy bits underfoot. Expressed
as a percentage, they are very small, but if you hit one at high speed,
an “Incident” could happen, so before you rip down any Steep Slope,
or wing over any Blind Crest, Slow down and Scan as far forward as you
can. Experience shows that the Wide Open Trails often have lots of
loose snow on the outboard sides if they have slick centres.
Line-Of-Sight, VFR Restrictions Directly Applicable. Slow Down For
All Blind Crests you can’t see the surfaces below.

Otherwise... Today has the potential to become a “Game Changer”
in the sense that we are starting to see recent Natural Snowfall
Accumulations re-open some of the Sous Bois, Glade, Hors Piste
Terrain and this will add further to possible expansion back towards
“Fully Open” 96 Total Trails.

REVISED Open Trail Count To 90(*) Attached Below.
Please Note:

This is important for Sous Bois, Hors Piste, Un-Groomed Glade
Skiers/Boarders due to the fact that the 2 added Trails are popular
Sous Bois, Glade Zones located at Versant Soleil.

Typically, it gets quiet on the Mountain today after lunch, because...

It's The Annual Super-Bowl Discontinuum, Where Rabid Football
Fans Flee The Mountain in hoards at Noon, so they can Transit
the Round-About’s like NASCAR Racers, then line-up on the
Autoroute to get to the nearest Big Screen T.V. where they gather
and drink more Beer, and eat more Nacho’s at once(more than any
sane people would have in a Month), while they watch Teams
of Grown Men try to give each other Concussions.

We Will Not See You On The Road, We Will Not Race You in
The Round-Abouts, and we will not line-up on the Autoroute
and we would NEVER think of leaving the Mountain one second
before Last Run for ANY Televised event, Especially When It’s Snowing Like Crazy!

We could be wrong, maybe everyone will stick around,
but we think there’s a low probability on that one...
