2/2/18 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360, Fashionably Late-Night Apres Ski Edit, under construction @ 10:57 P.M.

There was more inherent speed in the Snow Surfaces today...
The Whole Mountain Was Faster.

The wee bit of friction that was in the Warm, Fresh Snow
yesterday, was vastly reduced, say roughly by about 75%,
so the feel of it today was minimal and we suspect that
another Night-Shift of Grooming and an overnight Kkool Temp
at -25C have a good combined chance of further reducing the
friction to “No”, “Low”, or “Trace” levels.

If you were prepared for the Wind-Factor, the Skiing was
actually Very Fine, with particular reference to Beginner and
Intermediate Terrain. The Expert Terrain had some Steep
Pitches over Crests that were prone to slick or icy bits, BUT...
if you have good edges, no real problem if you are responsible
with Speed and Line-Of-Sight VFR/Reoccurring Pattern(Pitches over
Crests) Recognition Protocols... Otherwise... Over 85% Great,
High Speed, Groomed Carving Action, so overall, a TON Of Fun!!!

Above:

Above: we jammed the Ski Tip into the frame to show scale
against the granular Running Snow Surface. The Ski is also
pointing at one of the small icy bits that were evolving during
the day due to traffic. You can see that on frame-right edge as
the machine track imprint. All Small, but worth caution. Trail Edges
mostly all had Super-Soft Snow, so if you have Short-Radius Parallel
skills, there were good descent lines on the sides of almost everything.

Today’s Apres Ski Is Brought To You By Versant Sud, the South Side,
Summit Level Trail #18, McCulloch. The Very Best In "The Afternoon Sun"
Run for many Generations of Tremblant Skiers, and Boarders Too!

Above: Sunny when looking up first, then 20 seconds later,
Below: Cloud cover sweeps over in seconds.

NO ICY BITS On Lower McCulloch, or Biere-en-bas(that we experienced),
and... maybe about 150 Gates worth of SL Carves... excellent exercise...

From what we hear, the Sous Bois, Hors Piste, Glade Skiing
has BOTH Excellence and Hazard. Mother Nature a La Carte’ ...
The closest we’ve been to the Sous Bois, Hors Piste, is our
Le Tunnel Trail Case Study, Trail-side Snowpack Photo’s of
which there is one in the Orig. Post, below.

Obviously Cold Tomorrow, but... at least the wind is supposed to
be Low Speed, and Sou-West, so rising up the Mountain over the Soleil
Sector and across the Summit towards Lowell Thomas. The afternoon
at -12C and sunny, offers the easiest conditions potential and we think the deep
cold over fresh grooming will set firmly and keep the base mogul-resistant.

The New Snowfall has a statistical total of 29cm’s,
but we can tell you for a fact that the vigorous wind
it came on created significant Contour Shaped Drifting.

The deposits of accumulation cover the entire Mountain
to variable degrees and are favourable to both Sector and
Localized zones specifically. If you are a Legitimate Expert,
you are going to have no end of Fun on your voyage of
discovery. If you are a Beginner or Intermediate, today
should see an increase in many dimensions of User Friendly
including the Total Area of Open Groomed Terrain as well
as a higher levels of compaction in surfaces that may facilitate
ease of control movements like steering and braking efforts.

The surface friction that was in yesterdays warmer snow, may
or may not be there at comparative levels, but if it’s not, speed
and glide will be easier, and if it is, steepness challenge will be
easier with the enhanced control friction enables. Essentially, it’s
a Win/Win scenario that just requires a different mode of use
and appreciation. If there is a noticeable overall increase in Glide
we will attribute that to a “Freeze-Dried” effect that can happen
with a quick, cryogenic cold shock to new snow.

One things for sure, if if the friction is less, Snowboard Fans will
be grateful for any additional glide across plateau’s that enable
transits without taking a foot out.

From a diagnostic, analytical POV, the Case Study Format we use
to look at evolving conditions with specific locational reference,
just happened to be at the centre of one of the zonal Drift-in
sectors in the Upper Lowell Thomas domain where "Le Tunnel",
Trail # 66, has been the centre of examination.

You may or may not enjoy this trail specifically, but the main
point in observing it’s evolving conditions over the past several
days is it’s value as an indicator of fundamental elements common
to the entire sector. It is Time-Lapse on a 24hr.cycle, applicable to the
entire quadrant of the Mountain it is central to, where the last 4 days
has seen Spectacularly Positive Increases that started out “Great”
to begin with.

Personal terrain preferences aside, Le Tunnel is a gorgeous, photogenic
setting within Tremblant’s Versant Nord, North Side domain, and is
worthy of a visit on that basis alone. Artists have been trying to capture
this iconic Laurentian Scenery for Hundreds of years, you can surround
yourself with it today.

We ran a version of this in last nights Apres Ski, but for interest’s
sake, today we’re going to show an “Under The Surface” review of strata.

This particular location is immediately adjacent to the topographical crest
of Le Tunnel’s peak at approximately 1:45P.M. yesterday. There will be more
fresh snow over this now due to the passing Snow Squalls that caused
White-Out, momentarily Blizzard-like intense Snowfall last night.
One “Take-Away” point from the above is that despite some Jan. thaw
issues, the overwhelming component in the strata is beautifully soft,
cold formed, very dry crystalline Powder Snow that we think has been
very effectively supported from below by the Super-Cool early season -30’sC
overnights, and a most remarkable quality is that these lower strata remain
Completely Unaffected to this day.

Additionally:

Get Ready For A Fundamental Shift In Weather Characteristics.

The Weather Network headline this morning reads:

"Polar vortex tightens its icy grip, set to impact millions."

If there’s a difference between the Polar Vortex of now and month ago,
it may be in the Southern Extent of the boundary which appears to
not go all the way to Florida, like it did before. This swing in dominant
system factors has been predicted for quite a while, so not unexpected.
More on how it’s developing later on.

The Big Picture Is More Winter, More Snow, and Lots
of Great Skiing and Boarding to look forward to!

Page under Progressive Assembly,
Thanks for your visit!

KKkkkoool out again... but we may see a benefit
from a cryogenic shock in the form of less running
friction in surfaces. Temps rising to -16C under Sun,
and winds Nor-West, so Lee-Side shelter on Nord, North.
Layers and Breaks are key operational points.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
