T360 Mid-Eve. Apres Ski Under Gradual Assembly @ 8:29 P.M.

It’s The First Day Of The U.S. President’s Day, School Vacation
and there are Ton’s Of Kids Havin’ Fun Everywhere!

Besides being just a beautiful Tremblant scenic highlight,
This lead Apres Ski pic. is an up-date in keeping with the main
theme of the original post below...

Summary, A very technical Ski day due to
Icy precipitation weather. Fast, for sure,
Icy tendencies for sure too, but totally
understandable when Mother Nature plasters
the Mountain with a frozen shower... Crews did
a heroic salvage in just a handful of hours and
gave us an astounding recovery that would have
taken weeks in the days of yore. Tomorrow should
see substantial, positive evolution in surfaces
with tonight's grooming.

The Scenery Was Signature Tremblant Spectacular When The Sun
Finally Decided To Show!

The Clouds were passing over a low enough altitude that their shadows
left very sharply distinct movement across the Mountains terrain.
In this shot below(taken from Flying Mile Quad), you can see a band
of shadow across the Flying Mile Sector background, contrasted against
the sunny Summit and sunny foreground at the Johannsen Peak, just above
the Resort base, Ski-out/Gondola Base.

There was a lot of Feedback about “Icy” . If we understand our
observations as depicted below, then the slopes of Tremblant
got considerably different weather effects than the Old Village
of Tremblant saw, just a couple of Km’s crow-flying away.

Important Repeat:

Crews did a heroic salvage in just a handful of hours
and gave us an astounding recovery that would have
taken weeks in the days of yore. Tomorrow should
see substantial, positive evolution in surfaces
with tonight's grooming.

Imagine having to grind up several hundred acres of the below,
coating all the trail surfaces!

We are using this Summit ski rack image to illustrate the nature of the
Icy coating the whole Mountain got. Out on the trails though, it was all
absorbed and rendered out within the top groomed layers so it was
not noticeable in any way because it simply got blended into the final
mix where in terms of the skiing experience, it virtually disappeared.

We have some trail surface cross-sectional photography to process
and will have that to include in tomorrow morning Report.

Here’s Our Best Shot For Great Skiing Tomorrow!

In our orig. post we wrote about Treasure Hunts and Hide and Seek
games of exploration to find the sweet spots at Tremblant early.
That was when the Open Trail Count started out a 57. It jumped
to 85 and almost the whole Mountain opened at very similar levels
of consistency. The Hidden Treasures were basically anything 1 or 2
levels down in skill level ratings relative to shallower pitch. Almost all
the Greens and Blues were similarly prepared to very uniform performance
spec’s that you could actually carve on, while steep pitches were dominated
by gravity, so speed control was critical moving over crests.

Very Cool Tonight, rising nicely to real winter warm @ -5C,
with partially sunny sky again for tomorrow.

Thanks for your Visit!

The Open Trail Count May Be Down,
But That’s Only Temporary Due To The Weather,

And...

The Good News Is That The Fundamental Quality Of Base
Coverage Is Completely Intact... Some of it is just a wee bit “Firm”.

So...

Today Is The Day We Have Fun Playing Two Kidz Games...

“Treasure Hunt”

and...

“Hide And Seek”!

For all the Treasures and the Hidden Gems within the open terrain!

Otherwise, and applicable to virtually all the previous
and currently groomed terrain, whether or not it’s open today...

Despite Yesterday’s 50 Shades Of Foggy Grey...

There’s an important story to tell here.

Standing at the La Crete/Beauvallon/Alpine/Nansen/P’tit Bonheur
intersection at 3:40 P.M. after 3:30 "Last Ride Up” on the TGV Quad,
the thought occurred to hike the 50 or so strides back up P’tit Bonheur
to take some pic’s of Andy Moe, in the hope that the pea-soup cloud/fog
might not be quite so thick as it had been earlier. It was still foggy, but
we’re so glad we did that as it "Shows and Tells” a big story in a little space.

Below is a Zoom-in on the left trail side about 10 Metres down from the
trail sign above, and it clearly shows the point we want to make.

Andy Moe(#75) is a tiny trail, but it is an excellent example of the Big
Picture at Tremblant. What it represents is optimized grooming where
the seasonal accumulations of the previous grooming's repetitions
along the trail sides has grown large enough to be “Harvested” from
the outboard sides, and redistributed over the lateral width of the trail
to produce a fresh surface over the pre-existing base.

The Big Picture at All Of Tremblant Is... Optimized Grooming where
the seasonal accumulations of the previous grooming's repetitions
along the trail sides has grown large enough to be “Harvested” from
the outboard sides, and redistributed over the lateral width of trails
to produce fresh surfaces over the pre-existing base.

So, despite the unavoidable hand Of Mother Nature affecting today...
Everything Is Still All There, and with a very fine foundation, ready for
a bit more favourable weather.

---------------- Conditions Caveat(A) ---------------

Adaptability will be the key To fun. No doubt there will be
everything from firm and solid, to machine groomed soft
and smooth, so initial explorations will need to be undertaken
with great care. Icy Bits Will Occur.

All Skill Levels are Encouraged to Default Down One Level While Exploring.

REMEMBER: Icy Bits Usually Occur Near Crests and Over Steeper Pitches.
APPROACH ALL CRESTS AND STEEP PITCHES WITH SLOW SPEED. Anticipation
Is Key To Safety. Line-Of-Sight, VFR Navigation Imperative.

Warm Up On Terrain That’s Easy, Become Familiar With The
Mountain’s Patterns du Jour... and work up from there.

------------ Conditions Caveat(B) --------------

Today Is The Kind Of Day Where You Could See One, Or Several
Changes To The Open Trail Count.

We see the Overnight Low tonight as a potential Asset as the second night
of Sub-Zero grooming refinement, as well as the ability of very cool temps
to render out dry snow particles in groomed terrain. The additional dusting of
natural snow now falling may also contribute to quality if enough arrives.

Anecdotal Weather Factor Story:

Riding up the Duncan Quad 2 days ago with 3 guys from London, Ontario.

“We were at Le Massif and we were supposed to be at Mont-Sainte-Anne
today but it’s mostly closed because of the freezing rain so we drove all
the way here because so much is open.”

We have since confirmed that with a local friend who travels extensively
within the region in pursuit of only the best snow and had changed his
plans for the same reason.

Thank Goodness For “North”, as in latitude. Things could always be worse,
but when it comes to “Winter” and “Snow”, “North” is almost always an
advantage over “South” for consistent, reliable, Alpine Snow Sports Terrain.
Advantage... Tremblant.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
