Ski Season, Dec. 12, 2018.

Tremblant!
And On An Endless Vision, Blue Sky Day,
the views are simply spectacular!
There was a broad consensus across experienced
Tremblant Skiers/Boarders in attendance today
that it was indeed, the very best, groomed, carving
day of this season, so far.
Every good performance attribute, across all Skill
Rated Terrain, was as good, if not better, than we imagined
it would be.
If we had to characterize the conditions, we’d have to say
that there were 2 basic forms of trails. Trails that had higher
ratios of Natural Snow and Trails that had higher ratios of
machine groomed base, where recent snowfall was not as
deep because of either facing into the wind, or steeper pitch.
The key to understanding is the word “Ratio”. They both
have components of natural, they both have excellent base.
Interestingly, both of those trail types skied very similarly
in terms of grip and traction, but had slightly different feel.
The primarily natural, we’ll site P’tit Bonheur, was very near
flawlessly satin-like smooth. The primarily machine groomed
base, we’ll site Beauvallon, Haut, Upper, as a sample, had a
more granular feel underfoot. Both these samples held excellent
edge, very fast speed and were all-day smooth. We would give
P’tit Bonheur a slight edge above in marks, but to be fair, it
probably had far less traffic than Beauvallon as an advantage.
There were many, many others, and one could easily
and correctly summarize the whole Open Mountain as
excellent.
The next 2 weeks are going to be an Early Season treasure,
and with loads of new terrain being prepared for Opening
soon, it can only get better.
You know what to do...
More detail in the morning, but in mean-time,

it all happening exactly as we forecast.

We had so much fun at Tremblant yesterday!
The Whole Day Seemed To Go By In A Blur!

Yesterdays snowfall accumulation is going to be the basis for
the excellence you will find at Tremblant today.
The snow coming down was a very large, dry, floating flake
that while internally dry, had moderate friction on trail surfaces
that we would attribute to its accumulating volume, and the
ever-so-slight frontal resistance you could feel underfoot.
As you can see above, that did not significantly diminish the
overall speed potential a great deal, it’s obviously still quite
fast, it was just not as fast as the same snow is going to be
when packed. Otherwise, in the absence of ideal lighting and
focused sharpness, the pic. above is to photography, what
“Impressionism” is to art, and we think the low light, long
exposure, generating the burry effect actually conveys an
accurate feel for the unique characteristics of both the weather
and the performance.
The conclusion/forecast is:
We think that the difference for today is going to be a noticeable
increase in glide and speed due to grooming that will compress all
the air out of the “Fluffy” snow, and render it into an optimal packed
surface density of low resistance.
There was so much snow in the air that it was very difficult to get
pictures as it was acting as a filter on longer shots, and/or hitting the
lens making large smears on any shots. Of course, we’re delighted
to have that kind of problem considering the immediate benefit thickly
falling snow makes to any Ski experience.
Weather Notes:
A bit on the cool side, for December 12, but the saving
grace is the low wind speed. In balance with the bright
sunshine this is an excellent forecast for performance
across all Skill Levels, especially where groomed.

Conditions Notes:
The new snow of recent accumulations should see
noticeable upward levels of speed with groomed
packing to render top surface layers of greater
density.
There is enough of the new accumulations that
a lot of the slick or icy bits should be gone, but
it is still going to be wise to use reduced speed
on steeper trails where traversing traffic over the
trail centres can reveal substrates over the course
of a day.
The light mid-week traffic is low stress for all the
open terrain, so especially in the Blue and Green
rated trails where the steepness is not such a factor,
there should be very fine all-day consistency.
The first day after new snow typically sees a slight
degree of sponge-like softness in the very top 3 or 4
cm’s of depth so we think the carving traction today
will be exceptional as your good edges should really
be able to slice into the snow under centrifugal
turning energy.
Of particular interest to Beginners and Intermediates:
Today is the kind of day that confident Beginners and
Intermediates may want to explore more challenging
terrain. The “Forgiveness” factor should be quite high,
allowing for easy corrections due to the ability of surfaces
to respond quickly to steering and braking motions
without being either “Grabby” or “Slick”. “Just Right”
should be working well today if you want to step
up safely to a higher performance level.
We look forward to reporting back on all these things at
Apres Ski and we’re also hopeful that the photography
will be a lot easier to capture all the action with under
some bright sunshine.

Tremblant is literally getting better every day,
so we are forecasting upward escalating quality
in groomed surfaces, and ultimately, as
accumulations increase, the Hors Piste,
Sous Bois, Glade and all other
un-groomed as well.
