T360 Late Eve. Apres Ski Edit in process @ 10:47 P.M.

The Skiing Was Great,

from time-to-time, vision was a challenge.

As far as “The Skiing Was Great” part...
The groomed alpine trail surfaces were another incremental
notch up with the addition of the new snowfall being integrated
into the base.

Just to be objective, realistic and complete...
There are still some slick and icy bits, but in a few runs
you could see that they were in the usual patterns of
occurrence on steeper pitches, particularly just below
crests, or in high frequency traversed trail centres.
All you had to do was hit those zones from the sides,
and in all of those cases we found today, the trail edges
had beautifully soft snow with all the traction you needed.
Other than that, the vast majority of open, groomed terrain
was not only smooth and great traction, it was FAST as well!

Below:
This is a really snow-filtered telephoto attempt at capturing
some of the performance quality today and despite the resulting
fuzzy focus, the impression it delivers about speed and edge-set
reliability is 100% accurate.

In our original post this morning we included a pic. of Nansen Bas, Lower
with a reference to quality learning slopes. Below is another “Learning”
slope reference, P’tit Bonheur, and it was exactly the near-perfect
descent we expected it to be. Both Nansen and P’tit Bonheur are 2 of
the very best “Green” learning development trails ever created. If
you know someone who wants to improve and/or develop their
Beginner skills, bring them here and they will be forever thankful.

There were 2 types of snow in the air today, the natural, and
the snowmaking. Both contributed to vision issues today, but
only briefly as the natural was passing through, and you passed
through the snowmaking quickly, so neither was more than
momentarily inconvenient.

Tomorrow, a wee bit warmer and maybe some precipitation.
The probability of precip has been declining as forecast
models move forward. Even if it does happen, we think
the Precip. has a good chance of being all snow over cooler
Mountain elevations. Skiing should be same or better all the
way around? The best part may be the quite low wind speed
values forecast. Light south breezes from over Soleil, crossing
toward Nansen, and a high temp of -5C should be easy for all.

This Is Why You Are Going To Have

An Excellent Day At Tremblant:

Above: What was happening above is a very common occurrence
at Tremblant where the wind crosses the Summit while rising up
over Beauvallon and pushes a lot of the airborne snow over the
top to swirl around the summit level Versant Nord, North side
Lowell Thomas Sector trails where this picture was taken.

Below: this is a zoom-in on the crystalline structure of the snow
within 2 metres of the lead “Proof Of Snow” photo above. In this
location, it is a very light, cold, dry, large, complex flake with great
combined volume. In a way, it is like a loosely packed Down-filled
jacket, it has a lot of “Loft”. There is a lot of trapped air inside these
accumulations. It packs quite well, especially with a 12,500 LBs. Groomer.

It Skis like a dream...

Regardless of the Nord, North wind induced drift-in, the
Versant Sud, South Side trails facing into the wind were
still getting a snowfall benefit, just not quite the same way.
This was because the wind velocity was only at “Moderate”,
so still low enough to allow for accumulation, particularly
where trail-edge trees were acting as wind breaks.

If you are a legitimate Expert,
here is one way you may consider going...

The path to Erik Guay offers one of the most iconic Tremblant views
over Lac Tremblant, but you don’t get to see as much when there’s
so much snow in the air. Good thing it’s a Ski Resort!

Once you were on Erik Guay itself, the new snow was adding
a very nice element of traction that was particularly useful
along either outboard edge. There was approximately
4 to 5 metres of very soft accumulation on both sides that
could be used for either very fast long radius carved turns,
or very short radius parallel style turns. The trail centre had
good traction as long as you have good edges, but there
was not enough grip over the traversed firm base to have
much high speed grip unless you had razor sharp edges
and the quad muscle power to go along with them.

The way we describe Erik Guay above was common for the
wind facing steeper trails, and it might be fair to say generally
that any firm base exposure was directly proportional to that
combination of wind and pitch angle.

In the mean-time....

If you are a Beginner or an Intermediate, you just won the
"Ski-Learning Ideal Conditions For The Date” lottery at Tremblant.

Last Run on Nansen @ 3:45 P.M.
Fresh New Snow... Groomed in, this should yield some of the
very best learning and practice slopes on Planet Earth today.

It’s true, for this date in December, the learning conditions on the
gently pitched Beginner and Intermediate terrain are truly exceptional.
Groomed to near ideal qualities of density that yield low friction, and
high traction, it's a combination that makes learning faster, easier,
and way more fun.

Weather Notes:

Conditions Notes:

In the Open Groomed Terrain:

With another night of Grooming and a wee bit more snow,
conditions should be a very fine, "one notch up” refinement
from yesterday.

In the Sous Bois, Glade, Hors Piste, Un-Groomed:

a la Carte, on an individual, case by case, trail by trail
basis there is early season excellence, but... the depths
are not yet at mid-winter levels yet, so there is also
hazard risk. Use extreme caution on initial explorations
to verify safe passage.

Generally speaking there is still a need to match actual skill
level with rated terrain challenge. Todays refinements in
grooming should render a higher level of “Forgiveness” in
the steeper areas, however your ability to have confidence
in edge-set traction may be directly proportional to the
tune of your Ski/Board edges.

Day 2 where it feels like a “Private Club” week...

It’s a quiet, pre-Christmas week as far as
traffic goes, and with this much snow, an
exceptional value for those who can escape
to ski.

If you are reading this in the future thinking
about “Christmas at Tremblant”, make sure
you remember to add “White” to that thought.

If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
