T360 Opening Day, Tremblant Winter Ski Season 2019/20,

Apres Ski Edit: Under Construction at 7:35 P.M.

Wow, Wow, Wow... Is This Really November 22 ???

This Is Real. This is a genuine Tremblant scene taken from
the new Lowell Thomas High Speed Detachable Quad Chair
on upper Versant Nord, The North Side, just around 2:45 P.M.
today.

It is not like this everywhere, but it is totally indicative of
an exceptional early natural snowfall accumulation that is
a most favourable component of todays developed Open Terrain.
More on this point to follow below(#)

If you’re looking for an Opening Day Summit Panoramic...

You can not have one, and here is why...

It is simply snowing too hard to see any distance.

In The Meantime...

It may have started out “Spring-like” with warm,
rainy surface softness, BUT...
That did not last past lunch, and things got
real “Winter-Like” in a big, big hurry!

Technically, that made conditions challenging, but in
different ways during the course of the day.
In the morning surfaces were soft and easy, but the
rainy atmosphere was challenging. In the rapidly dropping
temps that included a very gusty, blustery swirling wind,
the afternoon atmosphere was actually very easy to take,
but the surfaces became solid, rendering new challenges.

In the middle, there were about 2 and half hours of some
selectively very sweet zones when the temps were cooling
and snowfall was happening, before the real firmness set in.

As you can see above, some of the trails are not quite yet at
full widths, so very important to be aware of those around you
when there can be a bit less room to manoeuvre with.

All the steeper terrain had slick zones appear as the the
chill set in. P’tit Bonheur and Nansen Haut, both retained
soft turning lines, but even then, the coolness eventually
generated some slick sections under thinner top layers.
As the changes became evident, it was vital to maintain
absolute speed/turning control as there was runaway potential
for unchecked gravity if you didn’t.

While it was very important to remain in terrain matched to
skills, all things considered, it was a fabulous way to kick off the
new season with the feeling that somehow, you’d just been
zapped into January.

We think this is exactly what you are seeing in locations
all over Tremblant right now. We do not recall any previous
November 22, where we’ve seen as much drift-in depth as
we saw today.

In The Meantime (2)...

Experts were enjoying Taschereau and as you rode up in the
Gondola, you could see a steady stream coming out underneath.
It was typical of the day’s temp. effects, so care was needed
in the afternoon to navigate slick bits that were especially prone
to the traversed centre.

We think Mountain Crews will be out Grooming all night,
so with this much “Raw Material” to work with, the
potential for the weekend is literally historic.

16(*) Open Trails With Summit-To-Base Ski-Out Sud, South and Nord, North.

Welcome To Tremblant Winter Ski Season 2019/20!!!

We think this is only the 4th time in 81 years
for the two-sided Ski-out to base level on Opening Day. Fantastic!

One of the main reasons the Sud/South, Nord/North total vertical
access has been possible, is the 78cm’s of natural snow already
recorded here in the last few weeks.

As usual, on the first morning we don’t have any current pic’s
until we get out there, so the bulk of the value in todays report
is going to follow in the Apres Ski edit later on.

What we’re hoping for is that the weather forecast is accurate
so the drizzle stops and snow starts. If that happens the way
they think it will, then we should have some good opportunities
to capture the essence of the open terrain for the brand new season
to show you tonight.

If nothing else, it’s just amazing to be able to ski-out to either
side. In particular, we think you’ll see strong local support
for the operational Nord/North base on the weekend.

One mechanical advantage we have for this start is that this
year American Thanks Giving runs late to 11.28.19, so the
crowds associated with the Holiday that normally coincides
with Opening Day, are just not here. That’s going to give
regional and local Tremblant Fans some extra space on Open
Terrain, at least until next Wednesday or so.

Weather Notes:

Considering last year at this time we had mornings at -21C,
so these mild, still snowy temps. are very easy. This user
friendly mild, but mainly still sub-zero forecast for the next
two weeks looks like the easy part will extend to the fun as well!

Conditions Notes:

For today, “Spring-Like” for sure, and as the annotated
pic above states, a poncho and yellow lens glasses may
be desirable for optimizing personal dryness and vision.

As the temps are dropping during the course of the day,
there could be some “Wild Cards” not only with the precipitation
turning to snow, but after a couple of degrees above Zero C,
trail surfaces may firm up a bit as temps dip to sub-zero.
If there’s enough traffic continuously moving, the firmness will
likely remain snowy because looping traffic typically keeps it
from freezing up.

The return to snow should alleviate any vision issues and
goggles should function as normal.

As far as performance goes today, we think it will be fast
because of the preceding weeks of very cold temps that
have established a very healthy, early frost into the upper
layers of the Mountain. If we are right, even though there’s
a bit of warmth today, we think that frost is going to exert a
dominant force that should stabilize trail surfaces, especially
after the predicted drop in temps to sub-zero before noon.

Another factor that may contribute to “Fast” is the groomed
blend of natural and blown snow. Abundant natural snow in
the mix can often help render an overall finer top layer that
is less granular than some initial snowmaking, so if that happens
what Experts should find is “Really Fast”, and what Beginners
should find is “Really Smooth”, and within appropriately matched
terrain to skill level, everyone should find “Easy”.

Conditions Caveat: It’s been about 7 months since any of us
have skied, so be cautious about pacing yourself. Muscles
take longer to respond than the way enthusiasm wants them
to, so be careful about understanding the signals of fatigue.
It is very common at the beginning of the season to over-extend
muscle demand which can lead to unexpected sudden demand
beyond your condition level. That’s when accidents happen, so
go slow if you feel your reaching any edge of your performance
limit.

Topic under all day evolutionary construct.

Sorry for delays, all-nighter drive to get here
on time and regional drive conditions marginal,
but should improve dramatically for the weekend.
Apres Ski to follow as well.

they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
