Tremblant Ski Conditions. We continue to support those

Otherwise... We got all the forecast performance quality we
thought possible, and more. An Excellent Day Today!


Yes, it was partially foggy, but big, big improvements on smoothness
and clear-sighted long distance vision, so as we had hoped, a great
example of substantial overnight corrections.

Very much looking forward to the anticipated combination of sunny,
relatively low wind(gusty periods?), and grooming for tomorrow!

Our forecast for conditions today is:

“A Big Bunch Easier Due To Overnight Grooming
And Way Less Weekday Traffic."


It was a very busy weekend Sunday yesterday, and when combined
with all the softness in the 20 some-odd cm’s of new and rather wet
snowfall, groomed trails did not take long to generate a traffic-induced
washboard effect. We do not think that will occur today because of an
additional night of grooming compaction and way less people for a
work-week Monday.

Below:
By grossly altering white balance, contrast, highlights, brightness
definition and shadow to bring out as much of the snow surface detail
as possible, this is as close as we can come to picturing the complex
characteristics of the soft thick and heavy snow of yesterday.

The reality was that the human eye can not filter things the way digital
processing can, so the foggy flatness of the light made everything look like
a big sheet of grey and most of the irregular bumps came as surprises
in forward descent paths because you just could not see them as individual
contours.

We are hopeful this will all be smooth, and stay smooth all day today.

There were select areas of relative all day smoothness yesterday and
as a connection to the pic. above, the pic. below shows that can occur
within the same descent path. This example below is one of the smoothest
sections we found and it was smoother here than P’tit Bonheur if you
can believe that.

The possibility exists that the pic. above is actually an example of the
second pass of grooming benefits we expect to see more widely today,
due to the fact that this little piece of real estate got groomed twice
if you consider the first pass was the grooming down Fuddle Duddle Bas,
lower, seen here coming in top of frame right, then got a second pass as
La Griffe got groomed, coming into the frame from the top left, all of which
had to go over it twice, for the groomers to get back to, or come from the
Beauchemin intersection below this point, depending on if they were
grooming on the way up or down.







Weather Notes:


Please Note: We were wrong on our assessment of the Monday
overnight low temps, and the actual time of the lowest temps
that we think could cryogenically freeze-dry out the new snow
humidity are the hours over Tuesday night to Wednesday morning.
Sorry about that. Tuesday morning will still realize all the benefits
of an additional Sub-Zero C grooming cycle, so its level of refined
surfaces will go up, regardless.

So far today, the cosmetic appearance of the day is
almost exactly the same as this sample from yesterday, however...


If we are right about today, regardless of foggy or not, it should
be smooth all day. If so, that will be a huge advantage.

What you can’t see in this pic. from yesterday is that it was one of maybe
only 4 or 5 days per season when P’tit Bonheur has so much fresh snow depth,
that traffic actually makes moguls. The difficulty navigating here came from exactly
the same combination of reasons it happened in other places, skiing down surfaces
with irregular moguls that you can’t see in fog during the course of forward motion.

There is a useful dimension to this story though, and that is the benefit of
learning how to master new challenge. If you are a Beginner, you will not
become an Intermediate unless your skills evolve to handle shallow moguls.
As a training exercise, you got that experience yesterday on a very easy slope.
Looking on the positive side then, and by necessity, the lessons learned were
the essential value of speed and steering control for safe descent.

Conditions Notes:

The new snowfall came at very close to Zero C and with high levels
of internal humidity making it thick and heavy. While that contributed
to the challenges of yesterday with only the first night of grooming,
we also theorized that the big benefit would be in days following because
when repeatedly compacted into the base, that thick snow becomes an
excellent “Construction Grade” layer of the top level strata we Ski/Board
on with the second(and onward) successive grooming cycle(s).

That is today.

Will we be right on this call? We’ll let you know at Apres Ski, but we
think our chances of getting it right are over 95% based on previous
experience that clearly demonstrates the very dramatic improvements
even one more night-shift can make in these types of circumstances.

Basically, every pass a 20,000 Lbs. Grooming Machine makes over
the thickness of the new snow presses out the spongy “Loft” of the
minute air gaps inherent in this much fresh depths. So, if you can
imagine what makes for great Snowballs with a second “Squeeze”(#),
you can imagine what has the potential for great trail surfaces today
with that second squeeze of last nights grooming.

(#) Any Kid who’s grown up in a climate that gets winter snow, knows
the more times you “Squeeze” a snowball before you throw it, the better
it stays together as it flies through the air to the target. With “Wet” snow,
even one squeeze will work, but all kids know that two or more squeezes
really makes the snowball solid to the point of optimized density. Of course
kids don’t think about “optimized density”, they just know that multiple
squeezes of compaction make a better snowball and we say that’s a
good analogy for the benefits of multiple grooming cycles.

There are lots of challenges with the up’s ’n down’s of weather,
but for the moment at least, being either cold or wet are not
factors at all. As an extension of that, we have a high degree
of appreciation for the fact that everything is in a really easy,
comfortable, temperature zone.
