T360 Late Eve. Apres Ski Edit @ 11:12 P.M
Another Day Like The Other Days...
Mild early winter, late morning rainy bits for about 1.5 hrs.,
foggy, foggy and some more foggy, with occasional
lower Mountain clearing.
Fabulous High Performance Skiing.
Fabulous Beginner and Intermediate Skiing.
12.3.20.Ptit.Bonheur.Crest.At.Runout.Pitch.d.jpg
The very fine sized sleety/snowy airborne particles were light
enough in places you could ski with goggles up. Below is a
sample of that.
12.3.20.Nord.North.Beauchemin.Bas.Lower.Burry.Fast.Performance.Fun.c.jpg
Nansen Haut/Upper consistently coming in #1 for
Beginner Terrain, right from Opening day! Amazing
surface quality on this trail.
12.3.20.Grey.Day.Great..Smooth.Performance.Nansen.Haut.Upper.b.jpg
By all accounts, tomorrow should be a very close
weather repeat of today. Skiing will continue at “Great”.
----------------------- 5:49 A.M. Orig. Post -------------------------
12(*) Open Trails, Summit-To-Base on Sud/South and Nord/North Slopes At #Tremblant.
Here Is The Basis For The Excellence
You Will Find At Tremblant Today.
An Official 8 cm’s of new, natural snowfall.
12.2.20.Nord.North.Ptit.Bonheur.Excellent.New.Snowfall.d.jpg
The new snow is a mixture of both particle size and internal humidity
as it came as the temps were dropping, so the initial bits were almost
snow-sleet, and the final bits were those wonderful wintery big, fat,
fluffy, dry snowflakes that really build volume quickly.
Despite the vision/safety issues with the snow hitting goggles, it was an
excellent snowfall combination because the firming had already begun, so
the wet edges in those first sleet-like snowflakes were literally bonding on
contact with the groomed base, and as time went by, while temps dropped,
while the new snow falling got dryer and lighter, it formed a beautiful
integration over the base that regenerated a lot of the edge-set
performance that had been there the day before. The difference now
being that the edge-set is in fresh winter-like snow, as compared to the
previous spring-like snow we’ve been enjoying since opening day.
12.2.20.Nord.North.Ptit.Bonheur.Class.Is.In.CSIA.Instructor.Clinics.c.jpg
The new snow is fast too. We hit the Duncan Quad at 3:13 P.M., had the
normal 8 minute ride up, and at 3:21 made a direct, non-stop Nord/North
side run on the only available descent line via La Crete, P’tit Bonheur, to
Beauchemin Bas/Lower, and we got back to the Duncan Quad Base for
Last Run at 3:29 P.M(**). It was not at reckless or irresponsible speeds
either, just a steady GS style carving run leaving fresh tracks in absolutely
pristine new snow and we did not see even one other person for the entire
descent... anywhere. It was quite nearly magical.
If you are a regional Ski/Board Fan with discretionary planning
capability... Where Are You? Tremblant is making the Covid-19
protocols as easy as possible and after a forced early season
ending last March 15, we can’t help but wonder why more of the
dedicated day-trippers that we’d normally expect to see are
not coming out. With that in mind...
We think it’s fair to take a moment to remind folks that supporting
local businesses where possible in these unusual times is a good
and worthy thing, so get out there and support your local Ski Area!
After 8 months of Covid restrictions in social gathering and event
cancellations, the sense of freedom out on the trails is liberating and
a days worth of exercise in the very easy Fall-to-Winter temps we’ve
had is better than any cancelled/closed Gym on the planet.
(**) We might call that a “Perfectly Square Run Cycle” where the amount
of time on the lift exactly equals the descent time. This reference may be
most useful if you are in any lapping/training/fitness mode and you have
a run-number objective for a specific descent path per unit of time interval.
In that way, maintaining a sustainable pace over a period of training time
can yield significant aerobic output. In our case, what we might be looking
for is 20,000 vertical feet in 2.5 hrs.
Weather Notes:
Conditions Notes:
We were a bit worried about the firmness today that we thought might
include some icy bits from the dropping temps., but after experiencing
the quality of the new snowfall and the way it has self-integrated with
the base, those worries vanished in the face of all the fabulous performance
we found in the last runs of yesterday. It was still snowing when we left
and no matter what fell Apres Ski, the bulk of the positive changes were
already evident, so we expect all those advantages to be there for the
entire day today.
This is low friction, highly responsive, yet very easily forgivable natural
snow that is beneficial across all skill levels. What makes it easy for Experts,
also makes it easy for Beginners, little errors are easily absorbed by the new
snow and it is not sticky or prone to catching an edge at all, it just wants
to let you make your best moves with low to no resistance, yet hold an
edge when you need it to in order to execute steering and braking control
moves with instantaneous responsiveness.
Beginners on Nansen or P’tit Bonheur should be thrilled with the
absolute seamless smoothness that is the hallmark of Tremblant
grooming on all the Green rated descents. Intermediates should
find plenty of challenge for skills building in the Blue rated terrain,
and Experts should be working on refinements while waiting for Black
terrain opening which is just around the corner(#).
(#) Snowmaking was Officially fired up on Versant Nord, North Side
Black Diamond Trail's #59 and #61, Duncan Haut/Upper and Bas/Lower
yesterday, so given both the new snow and the great temps for maximized
snowmaking, we see the combination as producing quick results for
this next stage of seasonal terrain development.
It would appear as though the “Snowmaking” icons have not yet been
activated on the Downloadable Trail Status PDF, however, we can tell
you for a fact, the snowmaking on Duncan is indeed underway.
This equipment shown below has been in place for several days
on Nord/North Duncan, from Summit-To-Base and it was being
fired up from the top down for the last couple of open hours
yesterday, so we imagine it has run all night with these well
below zero c temps.
11.29.20.Snow.Making.Equipment.In.Place.b.jpg
We also saw snowmaking on Trails #60 Vanier, and #70 Gagnon,
from the Nord/North Expo Quad sector peak. Below is a sample from
yesterday of the work in progress on Gagnon, as seen from the Lowell
Thomas Quad Base loading zone.
12.2.20.Nord.North.Trail.70.Gagnon.Snowmaking.Grooming.Terrain.Development.Observations.c.jpg
These are only samples and there are other areas under
development as well. For additional examples, we saw
snowmaking guns being deployed on Sud/South,
McCulloch(#18), and we were told by reliable sources that
Taschereau(#23) is also in process.
If you have the ability to escape to ski over the next couple of weeks
we would encourage you to consider days on the slopes of Tremblant
as a great way to spark your winter enthusiasm, the temps are easy
and the conditions are really fine with Ski-out to base on both major
Sud/South and Nord/North sectors.
