Very Fine Technical Skiing.

The first notes, summarized in the above headline, are for Experts.
The way it appears to us is that cool sub-zero overnight lows at Mountain
Elevations have been sufficient to firm up the base.

So, the existing shred depth your edges can engage is primarily made up of
the new fresh snowfall and while its really fast, it’s also relatively shallow.
Consequently, sensitivity is required to moderate extreme carving edge-set
or turning force to prevent blow-out. That’s why for Experts, we call it
technical skiing, the fine line of holding edge.

For Beginners and Intermediates, as long as speed is controlled, the Green’s
and most Blues have very forgiving, low friction/resistance snow conditions
that allow control moves to be made effectively, with very little effort.

Connecting the dots in all of this is that in addition to these points
generally applying to all open terrain, they also specifically apply to
Experts, Intermediates and Beginners simultaneously using the trail
pictured here, Versant Nord/North Side P’tit Bonheur, which has been
a hallmark of excellence for all skill levels that enjoy its brilliant design.

Below: What you can’t see here is the fogged out portion
of a carved 360 degree, complete circle, which is a rare thing
to be able to do. We have documented one other occasion(4.5.2016)
in the last 12 years, but today’s came as a surprise we were not
expecting. Reaching the bottom of the P’tit Bonheur entrance
pitch, we started a left hand carve in order to end up facing
back up the trail so we could get pic’s of skiers coming down.
What happened was that the resistance was so low that half
way through the turn, we realized there was enough speed to
keep on going, so we did, and finally ended up completing
somewhere around 400/410 degrees of carved rotation without
any motion support, purely on momentum. The Skis are a
vintage pair of Atomic FIS Slalom ST11’s @ 160cm’s, fully
cambered and very low days of use, tuned exclusively at
The Ski Shop at Tremblant(P-1 Sud/South Cabriolet Base)

If you can’t see the beauty in this serenely beautiful sight
below, you may need new glasses, if you’re skiing or boarding
at Tremblant now, you can actually go there and see it for yourself, tomorrow.

Please Note:

The alternate/parallel access to P’tit Bonheur is officially now open
Via the path across the top of Beauchemin Haut/Upper. This is a
huge asset for both relief of traffic and wear to La Crete. From
this point forward, all day durability in the smoothness of La Crete
will be greatly enhanced and multi-skill-level sharing to all trails
served in this direction will be both easier and safer with the traffic
volume split up.

Tomorrow: SUNNY ?!?!?! Wow... first sunny day this new season????

And on top of that, only -1C at Sud/South Base!

PLUS... Rumour has it that there may be some new Trail openings
either Saturday and/or Sunday.

We have been very fortunate to have what we would
call “Fast” trail surface snow, right from Opening Day.

When temps are so close to ZeroC, that’s not always the case,
so the enjoyment we’ve had day after day of very low friction
underfoot has been greatly appreciated.

At the same time, the inherent low resistance has also meant
the surfaces are very “Forgiving”, that is to say you can get away
with little mistakes and they don’t catch you up, trip you over,
or set you back. Little errors simply get absorbed into the relative
softness of what is the warmest possible range of “Winter”, just
below the freezing mark.

The softness and depth that allowed some shallow mogul zones
on examples like P’tit Bonheur, have been virtually eliminated.
This may be partly attributable to the lighter traffic of work-day
week-days, but we think the largest reason is the multi-repeated
grooming cycles that have generated higher compaction in the
substrates.

The largest pervasive mechanical impediment has been weather
related vision. It’s been somewhat difficult at times to keep goggle
lenses free of airborne particulate that has been prone to generating
a frozen film across your field of view. Please note we say “Sometimes”,
not “Always”. The majority of time, properly clean lenses work as they
should, although most lens coatings are designed for bright sunny daylight,
so the tint that most folks have does obscure detail in overcast low contrast
light. The solution there is yellow lenses if you can. Yellow tinted lenses
designed for grey light work wonders in restoring contrast.

Say Goodbye To Your Friends At The Summit...

because if you get separated in the fog, you may not find
them for a while...

Weather Notes:

The typical Mountain Elevation differential has been observed running
at between -3C and -5C cooler, so very close to our long term average
at -4C. At this rate if today holds similar, the “Mixed” precipitation shown
in the hourly blocks below have a much higher probability of being all
snow over the Summit. We have had several recent incidents of rainy
bits at the Resort Sud/South base, while up on the trails it’s been
predominantly snow, and we think that’s a likely outcome today, but...
we could be wrong, nothing is for sure forecast at these close to Zero’s.

Conditions Notes:

There has been a very delicate balance towards softness
in the top layers every single day. Sometimes the depth of
that softness varies from day to day, but there’s been enough
to permit good to excellent carving edge-set consistently and
we fully expect that to be the case today, maybe even better
than average with the recent new snowfall. There is another
fresh new layer of natural snow this morning to add to that,
bring the 48 hour total to 12cm’s, so it really should be another
great day across all skill levels.

With temps floating up/down/around so close to Zero C, one
might be thinking there could be icy bits, but there are surprisingly
very few. There is the occasional slick zone, areas around trail
intersections, where traffic has concentrated into narrow paths,
or on steeper pitches below crests but they are generally small,
and 90% of them are just very dense groomed and traffic packed
snow. If you have recent tuned edges, you will not hardly notice them.

There is one minor zone of some pebble debris that has gotten
mixed up towards the surface on La Crete, just above the cut-off
that(when open), goes to Zig-Zag/Vertige/Erik Guay.
The best line we’ve found around that is to go left-side trail edge
where, up to last run yesterday, there was a completely clear line
around the debris. There may be other similar, but at this still early
stage of the season, there are very few glitches and like previous
recent seasons starts, we’ve gotten used to exceptionally fine
overall trail surface quality from the moment things open.

Thank You Tremblant Mountain Op’s!

If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential

page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
