T360 Prime-Time Mid-Evening Apres Ski Edit Under Progressive Assembly @ 9:11 P.M.

We were wrong on our theories about “Best Of” scenarios today because
there was too much new snowfall that caused some thickness and extra
effort to navigate, so it was not quite as easy as we though it might be.

Of course “Too Much Snow” is NEVER a problem at a Ski Resort, however,
until it is assimilated into the groomed base, it can require extra caution
and definitely extra technical skills, especially for Beginners and Intermediates.

Depending on how much more falls tonight, our theories may apply to
tomorrow.

No matter what, Mountain Crews prioritize Green Trails, so tomorrows best
groomed conditions should be found on Nansen, P’tit Bonheur(this is the one
trail today that may be rated at “Best Of Season So Far”), and Algonquin.

Two Noteworthy Samples Of Newly Opened Terrain:

With these 3 pic,s we are at the attachment limit for this post,
so we’ll have more in the morning and these are samples for
introductory and initial opening references.

1) Versant Nord/North Side, Trail # 79, Sissy Schuss Haut/Upper, Bas/Lower.

Giant Contour Shaped 1 Storey Snow Wave Surf Zone.

The entire length of Sissy Schuss Haut/Upper has been developed to
full width with giant contour shapes that run laterally in steps down the
length to the entrance to the lower section. This descent path is typically
attached to Fuddle-Duddle Bas/Lower, but not this year, it’s a Sissy Schuss
straight shot all the way. The overall Skiing conditions are actually very good
for the whole length down to Beauchemin Bas/Lower. There is very good traction
on a dense base with fresh snow on top and the carving grip is surprisingly high.
(That summary could generally be applied to all of Tremblant.)

The side-door entrance to Sissy Schuss(Above, screen right-side), from Gagnon
is not yet open. It almost has enough natural snow, but not quite.

Sissy Schuss Bas/Lower has the narrow connection(not yet at full width), from the entrance
down to the first crest at the top of the wide bottom section, but the Park features that have
been on the Bas/Lower bottom section are not there at this stage. The bottom section does
have big lateral contour shaping similar to the Haut/Upper portion, and it is at full width.

2) Soleil Sector, Trail # 41, Toboggan.

Mother Natures Very Own Roller Coaster!

Toboggan’s trademark Natural Roller Coaster shape is mostly at full width
and while the base is all snow, it is also very compacted to a high density.
Toboggan received abundant natural snow overnight, and the wind direction
as it fell caused a significant drift-in on the entire left side descending.
Today, it is a legitimate Experts Conditions and there are some choppy
zones created by thick natural snow tracked by traffic.

Examples of points we’ve been writing about in our ongoing
case study of Soleil Sector Opening of Trail # 95, Algonquin.

(Please Note: These points are typically applicable to all new terrain
openings and this is a continuing examination of only one sample.)

Below:

The first point we need to examine is the substantial upgrade in the
refinement of surface particle size and consistency over the entire
course of the descent. What we predicted accurately is the common
benefit of “Day 2” that is typical of newly opened terrain. The somewhat
course size of Day 1 particles are now much finer individual snow crystals.
(There is a close-up surface detail shot in last nights Apres Ski, so you can
use the “Previous Topic” button in this post to go back and review that.)

This first pic. is an “Impressionistic” image because it does not actually
show clearly focused minute surface detail, but what it does show is the
dynamic feeling of the surface on Algonquin as you are using it. Seamlessly
smooth. It is almost a “Liquid-Like” sensation underfoot and in that regard,
on “Day 2”, Algonquin is quite near flawless.

Below:
The second point we want to cover is related to what we consider to be the
multi-skill level utility of the “Green” rated trail which when safe by virtue of
being empty, as in no other traffic within sight, can legitimately produce
Expert Level challenge with a touch of speed.

Yesterday we wrote:

"At moderate and very safe GS speeds with no one else around it is
possible to get most turns in the air by gracefully adding a little “Pop”
off the longitudinal series of crests that run virtually the entire length
of the trail. This is nothing short of addictive fun.”

Look closely at the Skis in focus below(use browser “Zoom In” for closer detail),
as they are about 2 inches/5 cm’s off the ground as this Expert Skier is doing
exactly what we wrote about, i.e., using the crests along the way to “Pop” off of
and make fully unweighted turns in the air(where you can clearly see the shadows
beneath the skis), even if it is by only a few visible cm’s. We were just lucky enough
to be able to capture this sample illustration of that potential in this image.

“Skimming Over The Surface”... By using the crests to repeatedly perform
very small jumps with sufficient speed is just about as close as you might
come to feeling like a bird as you “wing" your way down over the length of
this wonderful trail. If you miss it, or dismiss it just because it is a “Green”
rated trail, we think you’re “Nuts”.

Of course... by adding or subtracting jump energy, you can increase the
height or distance you are in the air for. So, where there is some ability
to be comfortable in the air, there is also the artistic ability to utilize
the topography to generate the amount and duration of lift to manipulate
either or both, landing points or takeoff points. If you don’t think that’s
“Expert” level technique employed on a “Green” rated trail, then you
are missing an entire concept which is really about being able to create
challenge anywhere it is safe and possible.

Conditions Notes:

The Official PDF below does not show the snowfall that has definitely
occurred, and is still falling, at least on the Versant Sud/South Side,
but as we write this from the adjacent Old Village of Mt. Tremblant,
there is some 4 to 6 cm’s of natural snowfall that came last night.
It is enough to cover all the cars to the point that they are all solidly
covered white.

Please Note:

and text intro. shown below as additional file attachment.

----------------------------------------------------

Small as it may be, where ever that has accumulated on the trails, it will
add a noticeable, functional, positive increase in the feel and smoothness
of trail surfaces.

Grooming refinements are apparent across the Open Terrain and
we had a chance to get on to Versant Sud/South Side Taschereau,
which has now been fully groomed and exhibits another example
of an ice-free, all snow base that carves edge-sets very well, even
in the trail centre.

As we wrote in last nights Apres Ski, we feel that based on all the
simultaneously existing trail condition co-factors, today has the
possibility to be a “So-Far, Best Of Season” day.

What we have is a string of consecutive days of very stable well below
Zero C’s on a 24hr basis, together with tons of snowmaking, going
on 5 days of grooming refinements, plus a little dusting of fresh snow,
all on top of the expanded Open Trail list, which is at a new high number.
That all adds up to a kind of "Fly Under The Radar” potential for today
and we are excited to be able to get out there to see if the theory tests
correct. We could be wrong, but if we’re right, today has the potential to
be a wonderful pre-Christmas gift for all those who are lucky enough
to be here.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
