T360 Late Night Apres Ski Edit, Under Construct @ 10:41 P.M.

Tremblant Had An Unexpected Little Blizzard Going On Today!

For about 6 hours, it snowed like CRAZY !!!

Basically, with todays new snowfall added to the last big snowfall,
we estimate Tremblant’s 72 hour snowfall total at between 40 and 50cm’s.
Camera was almost useless due to wind driven snow-plaster that soaked
control button and smeared the lens within seconds.

In our original forecast below for today that included a freezing rain segment we wrote:

"we think the biggest probabilities favour only snow up on the trails.”...

Wow, we really got that one right !!!

The temps may have flirted with Zero C somewhere in the region, but not at Tremblant.
All day long it did nothing but snow, and snow hard, “Blizzard-Like” hard. We did not see
the Summit temp go above -6 C, and it felt like all of winter, maybe mild winter, but
still winter in the combined bite of temp and wind with driving snow. It was “White-Out”,
at times, so dense you only see for a few metres.

It covered everything with quickly falling thickness. It was a high energy workout
just like two days ago and in some zone, in excess of 20 cm’s drift-in.

It was fun, but not easy. Really deep, thickly, fast falling snow takes a lot
of extra energy.

It will make a fabulous addition to the Groomed inventory and if you take this week as
a whole, it’s probably the biggest single snowfall week of the season, so-far.

If it is at all possible for you to make it out Sunday,
do not miss that opportunity. A good, solid overnight
low of down to around -8 or -9 C on the Mountain
should keep the new snow crispy and Mountain Op’s
will be out en-force grooming everything they can get
to. It should be spectacular!

The Essence Of Tremblant.

There’s a lotta' Snow in this scene....

You can’t get more basic than this very clear evidence of ton’s of
recent natural snowfall at Tremblant.

If you scroll back a couple of days, you’ll be able to do your
own “Before” and “After” analysis. The Ski Poles are 122cm’s
the Skis are 160 cm’s and none of them are actually touching
the ground here. This is just how far we could push the Skis
in until the brakes jammed with snow, and as for the pole, we
left the top of the handle visible to show it’s actually there.

Yesterday we speculated about the ability of Mother Nature to
“cook” out the humidity in the big recent snowfall with the
night-before-last's -23C and we are happy to report that did
occur, so the snow that previously had a bit of friction was
considerably “drier” and “faster” yesterday, than it had been
for the two days prior.

Below is a late afternoon shot from the top of the Expo Quad peak
to the top of the Duncan Sector. The smooth firmness that is so
obvious has been exactly like that all day to get to this point.

That’s a great result on a steep “Black” pitch, so the less sensitive,
less angled slopes of the Blue’s and Green’s are similarly fine.
We would also like to point out the continuing brilliance of the
widening of the Duncan Peak Crest to include the full width of
the slope all the way down to the Devils River entrance. This has
fundamentally and greatly improved easy access to the top Duncan
descent. You simply have twice as much real estate to work with and
that has almost completely eliminated the icy tendencies that used to
occur when all the Duncan traffic had to use a very narrow entrance
crest/trail.

Signs Of Great Skiing!

The well compacted smoothness you see above extended to all 4 sides
of Tremblant's entire groomed trail network.

Some of the very best visible evidence of freeze-dried, humidity-free
light snow are the dessert-sand-like wind shaped snow waves you can
see in this sample below from the Gagnon side of the Expo Quad Peak.
This only occurs when the snow becomes dry enough to crystallize to very
fine particle sizes that get blown into these aerodynamic tell-tale shapes.

Additionally, the lingering depth thickness that had been there after
the initial grooming of the very deep snow, generated way better
compacted groomed trail surfaces yesterday with second night-shift.
The surface densities are close to ideal. That meant all-day mogul
resistance, so especially for Beginners and Intermediates, there was
a 100% return to all-day easy in the designated Greens/Blues. We think
that will continue on without interruption all day today as well.

Weather Notes:

“If...” “When...” There may be a little blip of freezing rain mid-morning, but...
we think if, or when, that might happen, it could be restricted to Sud/South
base levels only. In all recent snowfall events at or close to Zero C, there
has been nothing but snow over cooler Mountain Elevations. Maybe we will
be wrong, but we think the biggest probabilities favour only snow up on the trails.

Conditions Notes:

Starts off "pure winter" and ends up "we’re not quite sure"...

This is one of those “Tipping Point” scenario’s where depending
on either a degree or two, or a few metres of elevation, there
could be many different possible outcomes.

In this case, what we have to favour is the probabilities that
we think lie with a more winter-like quality to the day because
of the residual “cool” in the surfaces that is hanging on from
yesterdays very chilly -23 C start. We think that will be good to
hold the dryness for most, if not all day.

In the Groomed, that means with the addition of another night-shift,
even better compaction, hopefully keeping all the speed we got back
yesterday.

Once again, it’s difficult to predict the traffic volume. The fact that
it’s Saturday would suggest it would be busy, but many people
seem to get freaked out over freezing rain forecast icons, and then
there’s the Global Covid-19 Pandemic issue that we are still currently
coping with, so who knows for sure. We think the likelihood may be
similar to yesterday where there is fairly steady demand at the Sud/South
Resort Base Gondola, and occasional, short line times everywhere else, but
with periodic concentrations or gaps in traffic as folks circulate. We did
not have any chairlift delays for more than two minutes yesterday and
in most cases it was ski right on... everywhere.

We thought for sure there could be some mid-Mountain lift lines, and maybe
there were at some points, but our experience was never anything but what
you see above in this Lowell Thomas sample, pretty much ski right on with
not more than 30 seconds of line. Today may well be different, but that would
simply support any effort you can make in future to figure out how to have
a 3 day weekend to enjoy relatively light Friday traffic.

If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
