Today, For The Very First Time This Season That We Are Aware Of...

The Holy Grail Of Tremblant Grooming Refinement Became A Reality.

The Final Canary In The Coal Mine Sings! (#)

(#) If you go back in the past seasons recorded in the Tremblant360
“Mountain Conditions” Forum you are reading from now, you will
see we refer to trails # 64, 65, and 66 as “Canary’s In The Coal Mine”,
a figurative analogy indicating not only the healthy conditions of the
Sector they are in, but more broadly the healthy condition of the whole
Mountain. This revolves primarily around the fact that they are Black
Diamond trails that are unsupported by snowmaking, so when they “open”,
it’s purely on the abundance of natural snow and that’s the first stage of
the Canary’s singing.

The second stage is when there’s enough accumulation that they can be
groomed. Marie-Claude Asselin(64), and Banzai(65), were groomed for
the first time a couple of weeks(?) ago, but the third Canary, trail 66,
Le Tunnel has not yet been done(to our knowledge) at all, so-far, this
whole season, up to today. Of the 3 trails, Le Tunnel, is historically the
least often groomed, so when it does get done, like today, it is a very rare
and beautiful thing, and... just because of that rarity, it needs to be pointed
out for the merits of its significance as one of the very finest natural topographical
rolling descents on the Mountain. When it is full of moguls as it most often is,
its very fine flowing character is not apparent because survival in moguls the size
of VW bugs is a bump-to-bump thing that prohibits the “Big Picture” or “Long Run”
POV appreciation. When it’s groomed, you get to realize that only Mother Nature
can take 4.5 BILLION Precambrian years to make Granite flow as smoothly as a river.

That is Le Tunnel today.

Merci, Merci, Merci, Tremblant Mountain Op’s

A fabulous job with exquisite results.

Symbolic consequence that can not be overstated.

In our original post this morning at 6:49 A.M. we wrote
that Tremblant has reached the point where “Average Is Excellent”...

At that stage we had no idea Le Tunnel Groomed was groomed, but we
could not imagine getting any better proof of that excellence today.

More in the morning...

Shred This.

If... If you have the muscle, the stamina, and the skills...
you can do this all day long at Tremblant.

A 3 Pic. Extension of our previous Case Study of Versant Nord/North Side Trail # 82, Expo.

Skis Or Board, With Equal Enthusiasm!

There are several take-aways from the these Above/Below Expo Pitch performance
observations, but the most important one to us is the ability of the Ski/Board edges
to hold turning force with complete reliability over the sequential turning progression
down this, and virtually every other groomed slope at Tremblant with dependable,
consistent, glitch-free universal quality.

This below pic., 3 of 3, is the overall perspective POV and in terms of time-line,
it was actually taken on the way up before and below the 2 pic’s above,
however it shows the approx. location of where we snapped the 2 performance
shot above as from the chairlift, roughly opposite where you can see a
group of 3 people standing on the far side of the Expo pitch’s linear centre.

The take-away from adding the overall perspective is a second major point in
this case study extension which is the Multi-Skill diversity that can be found
in different ways, over different trails. Here we have a rather obvious suitability
for those that prefer either Groomed or Un-Groomed Moguls, where the common
denominator is steepness.

In other lesser angled slopes, the versatility is likely going to be in the speed
where Experts will be able to dial it up when there is no other traffic around.

Speaking of which...

We took a run on Trail # 12, Versant Sud/South Side Erik Guay and we were
hoping to catch some hard-carving, super Expert action shots. We stood there,
and stood there some more, for about 5 or 6 minutes, which felt like an eternity,
and what we got was this....

Not quite the Skill-set we were looking for, but it does show the very light,
dust-like quality of the fine(small), dry, super-cooled snow crystals that
make up the entire composition of the excellent groomed top layers on
this trail that are wall-to-wall, and top-to-bottom.

In our own descent experience, we found a shallow linear grooming ridge
almost right down the centre of Erik Guay and we were able to perform
a (relatively)low-speed Slalom-style, fully carved, alternating jump turns
back and forth across the little grooming ridge, so virtually every turn
was in the air and it was very close to the most outright joyful fun we
had all day.

Trail # 12, Erik Guay, is very close to flawless.

We are certainly at, and we have certainly been at, that
wonderful segment of the season where the overall
conditions across the entire array of Groomed trail
surfaces can be said to be, or described as...

Average Is Excellent. Period.

Conditions Notes:

In the Groomed:

Average is Excellent.

Here is another typical case-in-point, Versant Nord/North Side Trail # 94, La Griffe.
While this example is an Expert/Black, the assessment of current groomed trail
quality can easily be extended across the entire Skill Level range.

In this zoom-in below, please note the continuing evidence of the light, dusty
appearance around the skis and ski poles indicating the fineness of the snow
particles. These top surface layers are super-quick, very low friction, yet there
is sufficient depth to them to permit very aggressive edge-sets. The ongoing
wonderful part of that is that they all seem to be wall-to-wall, and top-to-bottom.
You will find the same snow quality characteristics at the bottom of Nansen,
as you find here at the top of La Griffe.

Maybe there are some glitches out there, but even after looking for them we
were not able to see anything significant, anywhere.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
