It’s Warm Outside, But It Could Have Been Much Worse...

So far, at least adjacent to the Resort Base in the Old Village
of Mt. Tremblant where this is being written, it is dry.

There is not one single speck of rain on the vehicles, and...
it’s forecast to return to “Sunny”??? That would just about be
a miracle compared to the rainy bits of the original forecast so...

We May Actually See This Scene Back Again This Afternoon!!!

Even though the solar exposed snow got a wee bit sticky yesterday,
the iconic Tremblant scenery was truly spectacular. These scenes
never get old, and we never get loose fascination with the magnificence
Mother Nature has blessed Tremblant with. Artists have been trying to
capture the beauty of this region for centuries, you can come and
immerse your self in it on any Ski Holiday you can get here for.

Of Course...

The Covid-19 Pandemic makes that impossible for many International
Tremblant Fans right now, but as we write this, vaccines are being rushed
to greater and greater corners of the World population, so there is every
good reason to think that there will soon be a return to some sort of
“normal” and all of the regular Tremblant travellers have privilege restored.

In the meantime, here’s what all your friends at Tremblant have been doing...

Skiing And Snowboarding On The Exquisitely Refined
Groomed Alpine Trail Network !!!

This is a 3 Pic. Case Study Trail Review Of Versant Sud/South Side Trail # 18, McCulloch.

The first 2 pic’s are firstly, a medium zoom, then secondly, a close zoom
surface detail. The third pic. is an overview showing the Summit Level
McCulloch pitch. Please Note that the Skier seen in the first pic. below can
also be seen in the third pic. overview below at the low frame edge. All
three of these pic.s were taken from the same accent over the McCulloch
Pitch from the TGV Quad.

The above medium zoom-in shows the soft, smooth and very evenly consistent
spring snow that a Sunny +8 C day generates. None of the little ridges or carve
lines are deep because it was -24 C, the night before, and -11 C yesterday morning
so the only softness was in the very top layer and the smoothness came as a
result of the substrates being completely firm and securely compacted, ideally
compressed, all winter and still very cold snow.

The Detail:

At this stage there is not one single speck of icy in these surfaces. The cold
of the last 2.5 months is totally intact as frost penetration into the Mountain
and is acting as both a barrier to warmth, and as a stored refrigerant that
providing future temp cycles are seasonally average, will support these
surfaces to variable degrees, for weeks.

The Overview:

In yesterdays Apres Ski reporting we wrote that McCulloch was an
example of “Perfect Pitch”, i.e., where gravity generated by slope
angle was perfectly offset by the friction in the soft spring snow
to yield a superlative fall-line carving experience.

From that standpoint, there could be 1000’s of “Perfect Pitches”
at Tremblant right now because every individual Skier/Boarders
actual skill level can be matched with an offset gravity slope angle
that will work for their unique abilities.

It’s a wonderful thing when your individual potential can be optimized
with nothing other than some totally fun exploration to find where
all the positive co-factors combine to make for your own “Perfect Pitch".

Weather Notes:

By any winter weather statistical comparisons of “Thaw Events”, this is short.

So far, the bonus is that what should have been by the forecast, about
8 hours of light rain, simply did not, and has not yet, happened.

With overcast acting as an umbrella for as long as it lasts, the effects
of ambient air temps at + 7 C may be minimized, and so far the cloud
cover looks too dark/thick for the “Sunny” parts to materialize any time
soon. So, when you combine all that with the short duration, we think
the Tremblant Alpine Snow Sports Trail Network is going to get away
with far less impact than we expected from the forecast even 12 hours
ago. No doubt, when it returns to sub-zero C cold, the base will become
solid, but that will be rendered out quickly and in large part, by the first
overnight grooming cycle.

Conditions Notes:

“Spring"... Everywhere.

Yesterday in Apres Ski we ran a Mystery Trail guessing that centred
around the fact that even with the very heavy heat influences of sun
and air temps, there were indeed some localized more winter-like
conditions that survived the whole day yesterday because there are
some Versant Nord/North Side slopes that lean away, opposite from
the sun, and additionally they are heavily tall-tree-lined for even more
shade.

The answer to our Guess this Trail question is... Trail # 66, Le Tunnel.

Above:
We had to alter the contrast, highlights, shadow, and colour levels
to prioritize the visual detail around our volunteer skiers boots and
skis, where the real insight into this most winter-like snow was for the
entire day yesterday. The very fine snow-dust you see around the Skiers
right foot boot, and coming out from under that same right side ski is
exactly what you need to know this is still dry snow, that for the most part,
has completely escaped the heat exposure that is otherwise so wide-spread
over the Mountain. Dry, cool, dusty snow is the opposite of shredded warm
chunks and considering this was “Last Run”, we were overjoyed to have this
nugget of very easy winter all day.

In this one below, there is a tiny sliver of sunlight exactly at the point of
the Skiers right pole-plant and if you look closely, you can see snow-spray
extending upwards, well over one vertical metre. The sunlight just catches this
snow in the air at the height of the skiers shoulders. That’s all of light, winter,
dusty dry snow.

It is an important message worth the repeat that this is a wonderful
example of a very obviously shaded trail that has all the benefit of
retained winter-like performance within the Versant Nord/North Side
domain when the sun drenched Versant Sud/South Side has super-spring
soft, completely different characteristics.

It is this unique ability of Tremblant to have “Hidden Gems” like this
that help define it’s “Something For Everyone” character, even when
Mother Nature delivers such a powerful thermal signal.

It is somewhat likely that attendance will be low today as a consequense
of the rainy bits that appeared for Open Hours today in yesterdays forecast,
however, as distinct from whatever atmospheric factors may be overhead,
the skiing is typically very fine to excellent on these early spring conditions
days that still have all the winter coverages.

The trail closures are likely for proactive maintenance/reservation in
the eventuality of actual rainy bits. Please note that the Open List could
move up/down during the day.

Check with Summit Level Info.Ski Crews for up-to-the-minute availability.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
