“The Lay Of The Land."
One of the advantages of Tremblant’s 4 Compass Pointed sides,
(considering the Summit is a central, radial point from which the
Alpine Trail Network spreads out in a similar fashion to the spokes
of a wheel), is that weather co-factors frequently benefit specific
quadrants. Today we want to focus on just one example as a case
study, Versant Nord/North Side Trail # 57, Devils River.
3.12.21.Nord.North.Signs.Of.Great.Ski.Board.Conditions.Devils.River.f.jpg
The reason this seems important to us right now is that with a weather generated
reduction in the Open Trail count over the past several days, we think it is necessary
to draw attention to the core of the groomed trail group where there are multiple
examples of aggregate/synergistic combinations of favourable co-factors facilitating
unique retention of excellence in the descent quality, despite adverse ambient weather.
If you look back through the 12 years of this record, you’ll see we use Devils River
as a case study frequently. This is at least partially due to the fact that it is in the
middle of the vertical cross-section of the entire Versant Nord/North Side Duncan
Quadrant, and as such, represents a considerable sector of the entire Mountain
that enjoys similar benefit.

Basically what has happened(similar to what happens every year), is that with the
prevailing winter winds, this zone has received a relative abundance of drift-in
snowfall accumulation. Combine that with the inherent shade/oblique facing
orientation from excessively direct afternoon solar energy, together with ongoing
daily grooming maintenance, plus the recent natural snowfall refresh(in this case over
the past 2 days), and it renders a fine example of superlative Ski/Board conditions
that are some of the very best on the Mountain, simply because of the lay of the land.

If you think of the Children’s Story of "Goldilocks And The Three Bears”, this zone
could be considered a prime example of the “Just Right” combination concept.

Through The Decades, Through The Days,
All These Devils River Pic’s Have One Thing In Common...
Excellence In Optimized Ski/Board Conditions.
The point of all this is that a week ago we wrote about “Racing To The Peak
Of Winter Conditions” with 102/102 Open Trails, and now we are “Racing
Towards Spring”, with 72/102 Open Trails, so if the weather causes a shift in
trail availability, looking for zones that have the least exposures, the most
positive co-factors may help us understand and/or predict where some of
the best optimized conditions remain.
That is not to say there is not excellence in all open sectors, there always is,
however, it is the nature of nature to favour some zones, and it is the nature
of humans to explore for them.
Weather Notes:
Snow Squalls by their very nature are shorter, localized to smaller zones
than average snow storm systems and are more intense in the density
of snowfall, so they can represent significant driving hazard if you
are using a vehicle to get to the Mountain. It’s not a race, go slow.
The snowfall levels of contribution to accumulation may be highly
variable due to the gusty, swirling characteristics of wind dynamics
during their active phases. At this stage, particularly after some recent
“Spring Thaw”, every snowflake counts, so we’ll just have to wait and
see how this plays out today.
Conditions Notes:
In The Groomed:
It’s day 2 of the “Rescued By Winter” theme we used yesterday, so
an additional night-shift of grooming, plus a modest 4 cm’s of fresh
snow should make all the principle boulevards very fine.
There could be icy bits and they could be proportional to
either traffic volume and/or the amounts of variably retained
snowfall that can be wind-shaped and drifted, front facing
or lee-side sheltered.
You need to explore cautiously on all initial descents. Once you’ve
established safe zones of passage, go nuts, but we recommend a
narrower focus of selected terrain on a day like today when there
may be more functional advantage to remaining within the most
favoured geophysical sectors.
In The Sous Bois/Glades/Hors Piste/Un-Groomed:
This is the category with the most weather related closures.
Totally a la Carte’... highly individual, highly contrasted,
very, very unique, singular, one-off conditions of wide
ranging quality. Hopefully the Snow Squalls in todays weather
can make a material difference. We’ll try to post Apres Ski
on that.
It is possible, maybe even likely that the Open Trail count
could change either up/down with such dynamic weather.

Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.
When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.
There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.
(
If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
