The Weather Continues To Be The News
Starting At -36 C, However...
It is forecast to rise 21C, to reach a balmy -15C by mid-afternoon, wow....
The Cold Is A Challenge, So Let’s Look At What’s Easy.
Part “A”:
We write in our post today about how steeper pitches
are easier with super-cold snow, so this mini trail review
is for the legitimate Expert category. What you are looking
at below in this first one is the upper section of Versant
Sud/South Side.
1.21.22.Old.Mt.T.Village.Hillside.Views.Upper.Mt.T.c.jpg
Part “B”:
What we want to zoom-in on is the newly opened Trail # 14, “Zig-Zag”
which you can see below as the left arm of the “Y” shape of the 2
Summit level very steep trails, where the right arm of the “Y” is
Trail # 13, “Vertige”.
1.21.22.Old.Village.Mt.T.Views.Zig.Zag.Open.Zoom.In.Detail.c.jpg
Above:
Both of these trails had snowmaking big bumps, and now Zig-Zag
has been winch-groomed and opened.
Combined with the fresh grooming, these temp’s are going to
make Zig-Zag the very easiest it’s been in years because the
sand-like resistance properties of extremely cold snow act as
a natural braking effect, significantly facilitating speed control
over gravitational pull. What this proves is that with a super-cold
day there can be fun in exploring what happens with the “Laws
Of Physics” within very specific temperatures, notwithstanding
the personal challenges of being warm enough to try it.
Speaking of “Challenges Of Being Warm”...
This is the so-far coldest morning of the season so to
begin with, it is reaching towards the practical limits
of human recreational activity within sustainably safe
time-span endurance. To be safe outdoors for any
extended period of time at these levels takes very
sophisticated layers of personal insulation that may
want to include heat-augmented gear such as foot-bed
hand and torso battery powered heating elements that
can offset descent speed wind-chill values that will be
well into the -50C’s. This is not a casual play-time scenario.
For those very brave and extremely well prepared adventure
people out for the “First Tracks” program, there is a very
useful adaptation offered this morning which is the early
access and use of the Gondola and Sud/South trails. This
is the most practical way possible to have a reasonable
chance of multi-run descents, but even then, you will
need to be extremely careful about finger/toe/nose cold
exposure and the necessity to periodically go inside to
a heated warm space to avoid hypothermic effects.
An additional logistical challenge for today that initially may
seem counter-intuitive, is that to dress for a spread of 21C
rising temps means that by early afternoon you will be too hot?
Yes, too hot... If you have enough on to tolerate the descent
speed wind chills of first tracks, by after lunch all those layers
will be too much, so as part of the planning for all-day utility
you need to be able to reduce the insulation levels in order
to avoid sweating inside your thermal envelop. This is important
because you do not want inner layers to become saturated
with moisture that can begin to act as a thermal conductor.
If possible, some of the best options are pocket-packable thermal
barriers for the outside envelop, and multi-layer torso vents
in thermal layers that can allow a very graduated regulation
of core exposure to either warmth retention or cooling as
may be required, literally, from one run to the next.
What we also like to point out is that if you are from a southern
climate, up north here for a ski holiday and you find yourself
encountering an unusual cold-snap like this, you are actually
in one of the best possible places to find gear to help you work
with it. The 30 year temperature averages in the 14 day weather
data of this post shows that we are in a most abnormal cold temp
anomaly compared to the average for this time period of -5C,
however, it obviously can happen, and the shops at Tremblant
that also supply the local/regional skiers are your best option
for adaptive weather gear for any temp ranges. So, don’t worry
about being able to find base or thermal layers before you travel
because once you are here, everything you need is literally right
outside the front door of your Resort accommodation.
Our experience over decades of Tremblant winters is that the
shops at Tremblant sell what works at reasonable prices, and
at the upper levels of durable quality which actually make them
an excellent value. Well bought quality thermal layers can last
for years and years and should be included in the kit of any
serious ski/board enthusiast.
Otherwise, roll over, sleep in, defer “Early”, and plan to head out
around noon to catch the easiest hours of the day?
Weather Notes:
Environment Canada Extreme Cold Warning:
Repeat From Yesterday, Applicable To Today:
“We Are Not Alone"
It Is Unseasonably Cold All The Way South To Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.
Conditions Notes:
------------- Conditions Caveat: ---------------
Extreme Cold Weather Warning Means Caution Is Required
For Reducing Outdoor Cycle Times And Increasing Indoor
Warming Times. Do Not Play Around With Arctic Level Cold.
“One More Run” can mean serious personal injury when
another run can take 15 minutes, but when frostbite can
occur in a handful of minutes.
Participation Caveat “Plan B”:
As noted above, a legitimate option is deferral to a
late start. Sleep in, have a relaxing brunch, then head
out later on and skip lunch. When faced with serious
Kkkkool, discretionary/adaptive planning can yield
a far more user-friendly experience.
--------------------------------------------------
In the groomed trail array, at initial cold temp’s, steeper
pitches should all seem really easy to control speed on
because of the rather sand-like qualities of snow until
the ambient surface temp’s get into the mid-minus 20C’s
and above.
There may be very distinct differences between sun exposed
Sud/South and Soleil Sector favourable trail performance and
shaded Nord/North trail performance by mid day, and those
differences could continue on and become even more pronounced
by last run.
It is very likely that the use of the Gondola may be the best
option for multi-run capability for the entire day if you are
sensitive to cold.
In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste and Un-Groomed, there has
been over a half a metre of new snow in the last 10 days
or so, and with the relatively light traffic, overall conditions
in these zone are very fine to excellent.
