Tremblant Is Simply Beautiful, And Simultaneously Complex.

The simply beautiful part is illustrated above with the spectacular
settings of super-sunny, framed by the ice covered tree branches
that gave virtually the entire Mountain a fairy-tale sparkling silver
lining of shimmering light refraction.

The simultaneous complex bit is the consequence of the beautiful
bit in the sense that the icy coating applied to the surfaces after
first being warmed up for a day, then followed by a flash freeze,
has generated a unique strata with a somewhat thin granular top
layer over a totally solid base layer.

All of this has been rendered into a very smooth and wicked fast,
groomed sheet that because of the relatively thin composition of
the top layer, needs a great deal of sensitivity to applied turning
and edging forces in order to maintain edge grip. This shot below
attempts to capture all of the complexity in one image. If you look
closely around the ski tip you can see the composition of the top
layer includes broken up frozen rain particles.

Eventually these little ice particles will become smaller and smaller
with traffic and repeated grooming, plus... there is additional positive
mix potential with any significant snowfall. They do not affect the skiing
experience other than that you can occasionally hear a bit of clatter where
they may be of courser/larger dimension. This is why we frequently write
that freezing rain is never erosive and it is always eventually assimilated.

By creating the default “Smooth”, Mountain Crews have done the
very best possible thing to mitigate the immensely powerful
hand of Mother Nature.

No one can do anything about the sequence of intermingled
weather temperature and precipitation cycles, but, by setting
the default to smooth, everything else in the physical becomes
way, way easier to deal with.

We Need To Be Reminded...

The Good Old Days Were Never This Good...

Years ago, a multi-day thermal cycle like the one from
48 hours ago would have profoundly affected the Mountain
with lumpy uneven surfaces for weeks. With current grooming
technologies, we now have immediate corrections overnight, and
escalating scope and quality in each successive night-shift following.

As far as the current trail conditions...
The technical skill requirements are most evident for Intermediate and
Expert levels because speed is a critical component within the elements
of applied turning force. With higher speeds the mass of the skier/boarder
has far higher momentum, so with less lateral grip it is not hard to exceed
the ability of edge-sets to hold a carved arch or even predictably hold a
precise skid-drifted line, ie., a “parallel turn".

For Beginners this does not apply the same way...

The Easy Zone...

For Beginners this does not apply quite the same way, as at low speeds edging
can easily hold control forces.
As an extension of that concept, it can also be
said that for Intermediates and Experts that descend with reduced speeds, their
advanced technical skills can also be easily and very reliably executed without loss
of control. The conclusion here is that speed is the key factor in absolute control
for all, in these specific conditions.

A secondary conclusion with a primary effect is that recent, fresh,
sharp edges on skis or board are essential for effective control.
For all except Beginners, efficient control is directly proportional
to edge tuning. Period. You might have the most expensive skis
money could buy last season, but if the edges are now dull at this
stage of this season, you will simply not be able to use their design
capabilities in the absence of mechanical advantage. Conversely,
if your skis are 10 years old, but they have sharp edges, you will
be easily able to hook up and go with optimized mechanical advantage.

Basically, no matter what kind of personal physical skills or energy you
can make, the ONLY things that can transmit that energy or those skills
to any trail surface are ski/board edges, so if you have dull edges,
you’ll have poor results.

In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Un-Groomed categories, they continue
to be the single most affected temporary trail closures because the
freezing rain generated a thick mantle that is very difficult to break
through and in those trails, there may need to be either another heat
cycle to melt off the icy sheet, or, a ton of natural snow to bury it.

As a sample, this below is a zoom-in over the closed trail entrance
to Trail # 66, Le Tunnel. It looks beautiful, but... everything you see,
trail, trees, and bush snowpack, is all covered in a sheet of ice, just
as it sits.

This complex weather and conditions situation is a statistical anomaly.
In a decade or so, you will be able to find similar circumstances maybe
3 or so other times in this record. While there are many more freezing
rain examples than that, they do not all have the same utility effects,
so it's just one of those more unique or extreme cases that we have to
have patience working through right now.

Weather Notes:

There is a nice new snowfall occurring right now.
It will be helpful, but there will need to be a lot
more in order to change/cover the solid characteristics
of the base fundamentals. It will however contribute
to a more refined top layer that has a lower percentage
of granular mix over the open groomed trail network.

Conditions Notes:

As per all above...

Jump Into Action...

Just do it carefully!

Above: We enjoy the random air-action we can record from
the Flying Mile Quad peak, using 60X optical zoom, across
to the lower Alpine Park. It takes patience, you have no idea
how long it will be until someone comes along, and you also
have to have a good sense for their speed over the features
in order to time the shutter release at the precise moment
to capture the apex of trajectory with the simultaneous shadow,
but every once in a while, we manage to get the right combination.
This pic. took about 7 minutes of hanging around, but we think it
was worth the wait! Of course, we have no idea who it is, and they
may never know this pic. exists, but never-the-less, it’s a great
example of the high levels of technical skill, style, and spontaneous
fun that’s happening at any given Tremblant moment!

Please Note: More snowfall and additional daily grooming should
render out a substantially increasing square area of great groomed
conditions for the weekend, however...

It will still be important to bring tuned edges though, so either get the
file out tonight and look after that, or drop your skis off at the Tremblant
Ski Shop for their crazy-good overnight tune-up special Apres Ski tonight.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
