3/6/22 #Tremblant Conditions
Posted: Sun Mar 06, 2022 6:57 am
.
T360 Late Night Apres Ski Edit, Under Construct @ 11:33 P.M.
Despite “rainy" in the forecast, Tremblant was 90% dry all day.
There was a brief rainy period very early around 9:00 A.M. and
another at about 3:35 P.M., but they were both very small, transient
bands moving through, so, it is possible that if you happened to be
opposite those rainy zones, you may have been able to stay dry all day.
We want to point out that we called for the odd’s that the Mountain
could be mostly dry all day, despite the forecast, and that is exactly
what happened.
3.6.22.Lac.T.Views.Mt.T.Weather.Drama.c.jpg
The pic above gives you an idea about “Overcast”, as that was
the prevalent mode of atmospheric condition. Some might call
it “Pea Soup” fog. Photography was impractical.
The Mountain was schizophrenic, the open terrain had 2 distinct
personalities, the “Wild Sides” where there were recently groomed
trails with frozen coated fresh snow, and the “Fun Sides” where
most of the people in attendance were, all 6(#) of us... where we
had corduroy lines all day long, right up to last run. There was
almost nothing in between. We stuck with the “Fun” zones and
spent much of the time doing laps making “Figures Of Eight”
in the corduroy edges as we crossed our own tracks for run
after run.
(#) "All 6 of us...” is a figurative way of saying there was no one
around. There were way more than 6, but the point is, it was
virtually empty. Skiing onto the Versant Nord Duncan Quad base
mid afternoon Sunday, with no one else in sight is rare. It seems
odd to us that there aren’t more folks that realize how frequently
the weather on the Mountain is far better than ground level.
We have often said before that for all the times adverse weather
is forecast at ground level, 80% of those times the Mountain is
better. 90% dry certainly qualifies on that score for us today.
When you look out the window tomorrow morning, you’ll know
most of what’s essential, but the forecast is back to just a touch
below Zero C, with more snow. We’ll take that!

With +10 C, Rainy Bits And Maybe Big, Big “Windy"...
Instant “Spring”...
The nature of Skiing begins to see Spring,
so this scene will change, but how, and to
what degree, are not yet known.
3.5.22.Nord.North.Lowell.Thomas.Sector.Sous.Bois.Proof.Of.Snow.b.jpg
So, even though the weather is shifting and there are
temporary trail closures, the fundamental benefit of
440 cm’s in the base is the very real basis for not only
what’s open today, but the rapid recovery within the
immediate future.
Weather Notes:
This forecast could have been a lot worse, i.e., heavy rain all day, but,
with only a very brief solid rainy bit for an hour or so at 9:00 A.M., plus
with the temp at near Zero C at that time, it may even be snow over elevations???
Regardless, the rise in the temps beyond mid-morning with a dry
period following is way less consequential. The light rainy icons
in the remaining open hours indicate that the active weather will
be passing over the region in bands, so the Mountain may miss some,
most, or all the rainy bits and in our opinion, with this forecast profile
there is at least a 50/50 chance the whole Mountain could remain dry
from about 10:30 A.M. onwards???
We could be wrong.
In our opinion, the real “Wildcards” in this scenario are the
combinations of wind and wet. If it’s just windy with no wet,
well, it’s just windy, albeit a hot windy. If it’s windy combined
with any atmospheric precipitation wet, well it can be erosive,
however, keeping in mind it was -24C, 24 hours ago, not too
erosive because the groomed, packed trail base should be a
very effective wind shield barrier for these few brief hours.
Environment Canada Freezing Rain Warning:
(We are actually surprised there is not a “High Wind Speed Warning”,
but so-far none appears.)

This Pic Is Within 2 Days Of Being Exactly 10 Years Old. It
Is Our Standard “Go-To” For These Conditions And It Is Still
Exactly What You Need To Deal Deal With The Potential Of
This Weather Forecast For Today. Period.
Conditions Notes:
When there are 38 out of 80 open trails that are on “Progressive”
status, there is a very high probability that the open listed number
could change, maybe multiple times, during the day.
For that reason, it is essential that you consult with the Tremblant
Info.Ski Crews frequently, on a run-by-run basis if necessary, for
the literal Up-To-The-Minute intel regarding access and variable
weather influence on your skill level.
Additionally, there may be Ski Patrol hand posted signage with
conditions advisories that should be taken with complete respect
for safe passage.
At least 2 things are for sure...
#1) The weather forecast will quite likely keep folks at home,
either curled up in front of the fireplace, or frantically digging
out potential ice dams around the chalet footings...
#2) With these daytime high temps, there will be select zones
of excellent Spring Skiing conditions... because there is just enough
heat to soften the top layers for high performance shredding,
but total stability in the substate frost level that has about 8 weeks
of overnight minus 20’s/30’s C in it, and that is not going anywhere
for weeks and weeks and weeks.
Keep in mind 24 hours ago it was -24C. No short amount of heat or
rain can get through more than a very thin amount of surface as the frost
in the base is acting as a most effective trail membrane barrier.

you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.
There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.
