This Is Your Scenic Overview Of Tremblant Today:

These are some performance views of the fantastic, fun, fast and very high
performance available over virtually every square inch of the groomed trail network.

There was an ever-so-slight solar softening on the lower Sud/South,
however it was not enough to turn the upper Sud/South and all of the
Nord/North from being all winter, all day. When you look closely at the
displaced snow around the skis in the pic’s above and below, you’ll be
able to see that by the evident snow dust in the air. If it had been warm
to the point of any thaw, you’d see big chunky shred bits in the air,
not snow dust.

Everything we wrote below in our forecast for the Sous Bois this morning,
turned out to be exactly as it was for today, so other than the Edge sector
being off line, we would say the Hors Piste experience has been quite fine
for the recent cool days.

The snow in the bush has been a light, fine, coating over a very firm, but
very smooth base and where there are moguls they have been snow covered
to the point of being easy.

With an overnight low of just around Zero C and a freezing rain warning turning
to light rain, the outlook for tomorrow has the likely impact of adverse weather,
however, so-far, there’s been only more snowfall. Additionally, as we wrote earlier,
at these base level temps, cooler elevations could produce snowfall overnight,
instead of the frozen rain.

There are way too many wild cards to call this one, but the warmth tomorrow should
actually make for some very fine technical spring skiing, you’ll just have to be flexibly
adaptive for what ever the atmospheric bit ends up with.

Spring Can Wait...

For at least a day...

This current sequence of cold days might be what we’d call
a “Just In Time” winter reboot. For sure, we have way more
than average snowfall, but the recent warm/wet cycle had
taken a lot of the loft out of the snowpack and considerably
softened the top layers.

Mother Nature arrested that process 3 days ago by significantly
dropping temps, then adding snow. In doing so, in our opinion,
the whole course of the balance of the spring ski season had
been positively influenced by a reset that has essentially halted
loss, consolidated the base, and re-established the integrity of
the entire groomed trail network base, all of that within 48 hours.

Above: Super-fine Skiing on Nansen, since 1939.
This is a prime example of the benefit you get at Tremblant
when opportunity opens the door for Mountain Crews to
regenerate total winter conditions in the middle of spring.
As soon as the temp’s dropped and the snow fell, Mountain Op’s
were out producing many many similar zones of what you see
above, overnight, extraordinarily fine winter ski conditions across
the entire range of groomed open terrain.

Weather Notes:

We fully expect cooler Mountain elevations to remain
winter-like all day. The outright firmness of trail surfaces
may well be most durable on the Nord/North Side as
the suns rays are more shadow’d and oblique.

As for the long range outlook, it’s all of “spring", and pretty
much overnight, but the best part there continues to be
the prospect of night time sub-zero C’s over Mountain
elevations that should be more than capable of keeping
the base stable on a day-by-day basis.

Environment Canada Freezing Rain Warning.

Please Note: At these ground level ambient air temp’s, there
is some probability that at cooler Mountain elevations, the
precipitation could be all snow. We could be wrong, however,
freezing rain, as inconvenient as it can be, is not erosive.
Typically it primarily effects Sous Bois/Un-Groomed trails,
but otherwise it is quickly broken up as very fine particulate
and assimilated by grooming.

Conditions Notes:

Spectacular, Genuine, Authentic Winter Conditions For One More Day.

One look at the light, dry, cold-formed powdery snow
in the air behind our local friend C.P., shows you just
about everything you need to know for what you’ll find
for today.

Versant Nord/North Side Trail #’s 64, 65 and 66 are some of our primary diagnostic
elements for both the Sector and overall Mountain health and refined grooming
sophistication. There is not a speck of snowmaking in these #64, Marie-Claude
Asselin pic’s. It is totally natural, abundant, all-winter, light, dry snowfall that
has superb performance as either groomed, or Sous Bois, or in this case, what
we call “recently groomed”.

Today trail # 64 is shown on the official list as an un-groomed trail with mogul
icons, however after viewing the performance side as you see in the action shot
above, we just had to go back to stage this pic below to show the benefit of recent
grooming in terms of harvesting outboard trail snow and redistributing it across
the lateral dimensions of the trail to produce a level, hazard-free finished surface.

From Summit to Base, the quality in the groomed is virtually
seamless, within and between all skill rated challenge levels.

The Sous Bois/Bush Report:

In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste group, what seems to have happened
is that the recent warm/wet spell got into the top layers by a fairly
significant degree. It does not appear to have thawed much, but it
did substantially reduce the airy loft to render out a quite dense
layer at the top. This dense layer was then completely refroze by
the -20C of the night before last, before the new snow fell. What
you end up with is what you see below. New snow over a very firm
mantle that can not be easily punctured by a ski pole using a lot
of force.

Yesterday we wrote that the cold weather cycle had generated
a “Membrane” and today we can confirm that is exactly what has
occurred. We estimate there is still well in excess of 1.5 to 2 metres
of snowpack depth in this location, but it can not be currently
accessed practically without a drill and a very long bit to get through
a very thick crust. When real spring heat comes, it will still take weeks
to penetrate this, so we see it all as great sign for durability over the
entire Mountain right on up to closing day.

Otherwise...
By the end of the day, it is very likely that we will
see some trail softening on the sunniest exposures
at the mid to base levels of Versant Sud/South Side,
and the Soleil sector as well.

Oh well, “Spring” has to come sometime, but we are
very glad to have this very useful and excellent delay.
